This books provides an inside look into the lives of women as they cope with the dichotomy presented to them as countries in Africa evolve from a society grounded in tribal beliefs to one based on the modern, industrialized world. In reading the book you will come to understand the struggles and sacrifices a woman has to endure and give in their search for identity and place. There is an enormous pressure on women from other women in Zambia and throughout Africa to succeed, success quite often being the manifested in the symbols of the modern age, cell phones, cars, etc. The woman will go to great lengths to succeed and be accepted, including sacrificing their bodies. This is also exacerbated by male oriented societies that exist in Africa.
And thus, one gains an understanding on one of the prime drivers of the aids epidemic, why it follows the trade routes and money.
This book is highly recommended for any one doing research on the cultural factors affecting the aids epidemic in Africa and otherwise for general cultural studies in Africa.
Another books that should be read along with this one, is Expectations of Modernity: Myths and Meanings of Urban Life on the Zambian Copperbelt (Perspectives on Southern Africa, 57)by James Ferguson

New Women of Lusaka examines how educated young women in Zambia's capital city are adapting to their new social and occupational status in society. The challenges that result from rapid social change appear through vivid descriptions of family, school, and social life in modern Lusaka. The author clearly shows how difficult and painful the process of culture change can be for individuals who become caught up in it through circumstances largely beyond their control.
