SOC 2011 Edition Review

This is a required "textbook" for my son's Sociology class. All I can say is that I am appalled at the way colleges and publishers take advantage of a captive student audience. This is essentially a magazine -- paper covers & thin, slick pages -- a horribly overpriced magazine. Inside, my son's first impression is that it is superficial and designed more for lightweight entertainment than serious education. He's now skeptical his class will be of much value, not the best way to start a new semester.
So beware. Unfortunately, if this is required by your professor, you're stuck with it. You can only hope he or she supplements it with something more substantive.
(If my son's opinion improves as he actually uses this in class, I will update the review.)
