The Sincerest Form Review

The Sincerest Form
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delbanco takes us into unpopular waters with "The Sincerest Form," but it is very much worth the voyage. Imitation is one of the most effective ways to learn, and this book can guide you where many, perhaps rightly fearful of [...], would be unlikely to take you. In a progression of exercises of imitation and revision, Delbanco shows how much you can learn from, well, from copying others. Incidentally, this is the only required text from one of my college classes that I have actually found useful. I guess that tells you something.

Nicolas Delbanco explores the stories and techniques of twelve stylists, from Ernest Hemingway to Jamaica Kincaid, and encourages students to imitate the craft of these master storytellers as they hone their own fiction writing skills.

The American Tradition in Literature, Volume 2 (book alone) Review

The American Tradition in Literature, Volume 2 (book alone)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this book in a college American literature class. It has tons of short stories and full text of a few novels. I forget which are the full text novels aside from "Huck Finn." One thing I like about this book is that it's diverse: it has the "traditional" American literature, but it also includes Richard Wright, Alice Walker, James Baldwin, etc. There are also really helpful footnotes that aide in understanding.

Aproximaciones is a wonderful tool for the student learning about Spanish literature. The selections are well analyzed by the author and the biographies provide an overview of the cultures and perspectives of the different time periods. The chronological order of the readings makes it easy to understand the different stages of the Spanish literature and the various literary movements affecting the arts, the philosophy, and society of medieval to modern times.

World Literature, 2nd Edition Student Edition softcover Review

World Literature, 2nd Edition Student Edition softcover
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent text for use in introductory world literature courses at either the high school or college levels. It offers a wide array of short stories, drama, and poetry by respected authors throughout history and up into the 20th century. Included are ancient pieces such as Akhenaton's "Hymn to the Aton" and Psalm 23 from the Bible, works by modern authors like Alice Walker, and everything in between, including Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Kafka, Dante, Dostoyesvsky, Yeats, Brontë, Wordsworth, Sophocles, Schiller, Ibsen, Colette, Bombal, Hemingway, Poe, Dickinson, and many more. There are 76 pieces in all, categorized by continent / region: the Mediterranean, Continental Europe, Africa, the Far East, Latin America, North America, and Great Britain.
Each piece, usually one of that particular author's best and most famous, is introduced by the editor with information on the author's life, times, and works. There are also accompanying critical questions for each story, play, and poem. I found that these were very useful as jumping-off points for the analysis of a piece, helping to start the critical thinking process. In addition, the editor suggests a few creative writing exercises to go along with each piece. I enjoyed using this book and feel that I gained a lot from it. The pieces are well-selected and give a nice sampling of literature from all geographical regions and time periods, including works in all genres and literary styles. Definitely a recommended text.

Buen Viaje Spanish 3, Student Tape Manual Review

Buen Viaje Spanish 3, Student Tape Manual
Average Reviews:

I am very disappointed with my copy of Buen Viaje Level 3. It was said to be in acceptable condition, but i feel that the book i received is less than desirable. The cover has been colored on and has a strange feel to it. Once opened, numerous pages are wrinkled and have underlining and highlighting all over. As I continued to leaf through it, I discovered some very innappropriate writting and other strange writing along the margins. This book has clearly been trashed and should not have been labeled as acceptable. It obviously is not!!
