Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook Review

Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The authors told us in the introduction part of this book that it is for "both Oracle developers who want to make the transition to the J2EE environment and also Java developers who want to leverage the productivity tools and frameworks available in JDeveloper". The authors have done an good job to satisfy this scope, though I feel time by time that this is book is actually written for Oracle developers who have already exposed to Java/J2EE technology and also J2EE developers who possess basic knowledge about Oracle database technology. Otherwise, I do not recommend you to start your journey from this book. It could be too difficult. Further more, if you want to learn how to use JDeveloper 10g as your Java development tool, this book is not designed for you.
This book gives a good overview of the introductory information about JDeveloper 10g and many related J2EE technologies developed by Oracle. Such overview coverage is further enhanced by about 25 well-designed step-by-step hands-on practices, which are very helpful.
It is true that you may find a lot of learning material from Oracle Technology Network. However, I feel this book offers the unique value by covering this quite extensive and diversified subject in an organized way. By reading this book, you will certainly improve your productivity since JDeveloper 10g is a great tool and since otherwise you may feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of information you may find online.
This book is based on Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release of version 9.0.5.1. The current Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release is of version 10.1.2. I found some of the step-by-step instructions may need slight modification due to the difference of the two versions, though I do not think it posses much difficult to any experienced readers.
Chapter 5, Java Language Concepts for JDeveloper Work, gives a very brief overview of Java concepts. Well, if you need to read this chapter, you are not ready to read this book yet. The good news is that this chapter is only about 30 pages long, less than 5% of this thick book. The development of the rest of the story is in a quite logic and readable order.
The authors explain to us that "this book is a `handbook' not in the sense of a complete guide to all areas of the tool, but, .., a guide for creating J2EE applications using JDeveloper". It is interesting why they still insist to call it a handbook. This book covers only many of the basic features of JDeveloper. If you are advanced, and if you need quickly find a good coverage on an important but advanced features, most likely this is not the book that will give you an answer. Many of the books by Oracle Press are already written in somewhat quite a technical manner. Calling it a handbook may actually scare away those who are new to 10g. You do not start studying a subject by reading a handbook, do you?

Oracle Database 10g PL/SQL Programming Review

Oracle Database 10g PL/SQL Programming
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is a large survey of the PL/SQL language and introduces many new things that have changed with 10g. But there is a major problem with the book, which runs throughout almost all Oracle Documentation.
The book is written more as a corporate training manual than that of a programming text book. As probably everyone who ever took a training class from their company knows, training is often done by people who not only are not educators, but may not actually understand or have even used the subject of the training. It is intentional that such people do not state the concepts abstractly - they only know concrete examples and maybe only the example in their pre-written material.
This book fits this description to a T. It does not specify the correct syntax except in examples. It does not specify the qualifications and conditions governing the language elements or the examples. As such, unless you are essentially copying an example almost verbatim, you have no real knowledge of whether your code will compile, let alone work as intended. As an example consider their discussion of SELECT statements. They speak about the Select clause, the INTO clause, etc. Nowhere do they state that the list of items in the INTO clause should separated by commas. Although most people could correctly guess that the comma is the separator, you need to find an example to show you that. The book is rampant with omissions like this. Two pages later, they use an OPEN - FOR construct in an example without introducing it. That it can be used dynamically, i.e. with the query in a character string constructed at run time, is not only not mentioned in this section, but is not even mentioned in the chapter on Dynamic SQL.
This should be looked upon as a book of (simple) examples. It should be no one's text or reference.

Oracle General Ledger Guide: Implement a Highly Automated Financial Processing System (Osborne ORACLE Press Series) Review

Oracle General Ledger Guide: Implement a Highly Automated Financial Processing System (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is for you if you have not heard about Oracle EBS General Ledger and you do not know the existence of Oracle documentation. Having been in Oracle consultantcy for 12 years, I have never come across such a poorly presented book on Oracle EBS. Some comparably bad ones are Oracle Procure to pay by Melanie Cameron and Oracle EBS Financials Administration by Shanker Iyer.
There are better books available on Oracle EBS like Oracle EBS Financials Handbook by David James, Oracle EBS manufacturing & Supply chain by Bastin Gerald and Solution Beacon publications.
Back to the book, the contents of the book have nothing to do with the title "Implement a highly automated financials". I was expecting a book with functional prespective, technical architecture (Financials), Interfacing along with the business process & Testing. Boy! I was busted! This book contains only selected text from Oracle Implementation and user guides.
Leaving the front & back wrapper, about the author, contents, index , blank pages etc the effective size of the book is about 250 pages. Out of these 250 pages, a significant portion has been taken by screen shots of EBS R12. None of the subjects are adquately covered. For example. multi currency is covered in just 7 pages, No referece about Advanced Global Inter company system is found. AGCS is just touched and so on and so forth.
The new/modified features in GL like Ledger set, Data Access set, MOAC, SLA, TAX, etc are not adequately covered.
On the other hand, I have read some of the white papers presented by the author on Oracle Financials that are really well presented. They also show that the author is highly knowledgable in the subject!

Oracle E-Business Suite Manufacturing & Supply Chain Management Review

Oracle E-Business Suite Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is very hard to write a book of this size and at the same time cover all aspects of Oracle Mfg. and Supply Chain Mgmt modules and I congratulate the authors for having done a commendable job at that.
The first thing I see as different from other books and Oracle documentation is the fact that the topics are organized by functional areas rather than individual Oracle modules. This approach gives the complete picture of a business process and then illustrates how each oracle module is used in that business process.
Instead of just talking about what each modules can do, the authors have tried to blend plain functional content along with the discussion of oracle specific implementation of that process, which would help even novices to understand why something is done in oracle in the way it is done. One example is the way they discuss "Enterprise Structure" in the second chapter, starting from the Enterprise at the top, going down all the way up to Stock Locators.
Another good thing is that the authors have used logical data models to illustrate certain areas of the mfg. and SCM modules. There are also lots of table references through the book. This will be of interest for someone who is doing custom reports.
Finally, I've found that similar books lack in the number and accuracy (filled with appropriate data) of screenshots. This one has numerous screenshots that aid in better understanding of the subject being discussed.

Oracle9i: The Complete Reference Review

Oracle9i: The Complete Reference
Average Reviews:

This is the one I've been waiting for. It's got coverage of the 9i features like external tables and updates the older chapters to include features. I hadn't even heard about multitable inserts before this book. The CD has 9i R2 docs as well as the book scripts. Overall, more in-depth coverage than the 9i New Features book but the new features are more integrated to old text so you may have to read a little more but it's worth it.

Oracle Database 10g SQL (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)

I liked this book because it covers Oracle 10g SQL as well as PL/SQL, that's great because it saved me buying two separate books!
I was able to download the code from the website and follow along with all the examples with no problem. I especially liked the coverage of the 10g specific features, such as the new MODEL clause and the new 10g database types (BINARY_DOUBLE and BINARY_FLOAT).
All in all, a great book.
