(More customer reviews)This book is unique in that it is both low-priced and provides an overview of four popular languages - C, C++, Java and VisualBasic (I couldn't find anything on Pascal and Fortran, unlike what the Publisher's review implies). It is sometimes heavy going and or lacks detail in places, and will need to be supplemented by other books and courses. Still, it's good value for the price.

Machine Learning (Mcgraw-Hill International Edit) Review

(More customer reviews)I agree with some of the previous reviews which criticize the book for its lack of depth, but I believe this to be an asset rather than a liability given its target audience (seniors and beginning grad. students). The average college senior typically knows very little about subjects like neural networks, genetic algorithms, or Baysian networks, and this book goes a long way in demystifying these subjects in a very clear, concise, and understandable way. Moreover, the first-year grad. student who is interested in possibly doing research in this field needs more of an overview than to dive deeply into
one of the many branches which themselves have had entire books written about them. This is one of the few if only books where one will find diverse areas of learning (e.g. analytical, reinforcment, Bayesian, neural-network, genetic-algorithmic) all within the same cover.
But more than just an encyclopedic introduction, the author makes a number of connections between the different paradigms. For example, he explains that associated with each paradigm is the notion of an inductive-learning bias, i.e. the underlying assumptions that lend validity to a given learning approach. These end-of-chapter discussions on bias seem very interesting and unique to this book.
Finally, I used this book for part of the reading material for an intro. AI class, and received much positive feedback from the students, although some did find the presentation a bit too abstract for their undergraduate tastes

A few chapters are simple enough for students to run over quickly. There is a supplementary questions and solved questions with working for student to understand and practice on. Overall the book is good enough to refresh your memory on computer maths.

Schaum's Outline of Computer Architecture (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

(More customer reviews)Quite frankly, I was surprised at the usefulness of this Schaum's outline. I didn't think that the Schaum's outline format would work for a subject like computer architecture, but it does. All aspects of computer architecture are covered from computer arithmetic to processor design to memory systems to the advanced topic of multiprocessing. The format of the outline is a little different from the Schaum's usual formula. Each chapter consists of an "Objectives" section, followed by an introduction, followed by the various subsections of that chapter. There are examples and exercises on instruction set design, program design, block diagrams, and quite a few mathematical problems. This book is probably best suited to the advanced undergraduate or for self-study of the subject. If you are a graduate student that is using Hennessy's "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" the level of difficulty of the mathematical problems in that book is not matched by this one, and you should look for another source. Otherwise I recommend this guide for most students of computer architecture.

I definitely encourage you to purchase this book. However, along with this book you should also buy "2000 Solved Problems in Discrete Mathematics" in Schaum's Solved Problems Series. While the book I'm reviewing here has some problems and solutions, this additional book provides many variations of these problems, allowing you to look at problems from the different angles that will probably show up on your next exam.

Schaum's Outline of Finite Mathematics Review

(More customer reviews)The term "finite mathematics" is one you don't hear too much anymore, because it is too broad of a topic. It usually means either discrete mathematics or an eclectic combination of math topics, including probability and statistics, some graph theory, linear programming, some basic linear algebra, and a bit of calculus, usually intended for business students. This book encompasses the latter definition - it is college level math for business students all the way to the graduate level. The problems are pretty good, and the explanations are good too. The sections on graph theory and game theory are particularly well done and instructive compared to most books. I would say if you are interested in any one of the topics covered in this book in depth, then you should look at the Schaum's outline for that specific topic - in most cases one does exist. However, especially if you are considering in enrolling in the math-intensive field of operations management, you might want to pick up this book as a reference and a self-test. If you can work through the problems in this book, you are probably eminently qualified, at least mathematically, to study operations management.
