(More customer reviews)I am currently a fourth year medical student going into emergency medicine. I really wanted to do well for my clerkships so I read the basic EM books that many students read such as first aid. A friend who actually was a reviewer for the book let me borrow it a few weeks during my clerkship. I read via the book and wished I had this book earlier! I tried to do a review below with positives and negatives.
Overview: This is the second edition but did read the first edition as a third year for a brief two week rotation. The Deja Review series is very similar to the First Aid series or Recall which follows a question and answer format which I prefer much more than the fact-type books. Since i have read both recall and First Aid I do have something to compare it to. It has a nice clean attractive look full of useful high-yield information, charts, and vignettes.
I'll start with the negatives:
1. Size: While a great book it is kind of on the bigger size to carry in the ED. I usually read it in between patients or at home and used Pocket EM for my on the go stuff.
2. Organization: not really a bad depending how you like to learn. It is organized by organ system which is what I prefer to learn by so I really don't see this as a negative. I know some of my friends that prefer chief complaints.
3. Not sure if this is a negative but it is not a text book. While awesome as a "pimp" book, it does not really explain pathophysiology like Rosen's but that is to be expected since this book is designed as a question/answer book. Just something to keep in mind.
Positive:
1. Many good things to say, the biggest seller for me is the high-yield information that was covered in this book. The residents and attendings I worked with asked me many "pimp" questions in this book which at the end of the day is important and helps you stand out.
2. Vignettes: I really liked the clinical vignettes at the end of each chapter. It helped to reinforce the stuff I read in the chapter. These vignettes presented bread and butter cases so no mystery. The thing I really thought was unique about this book was the stimulus section. This is similar to the the section for the written boards that residents take each year. It was short and wish there was more but had good images and great cases.
3. Charts: High-yield charts that presented key information like ped vitals and tox antidotes, very well done.Overall:
I think this is an excellent review book that any med student interested in EM would find very useful. With the combination of its high yield questions, clinical cases, and stimulus section it really hits all the main points. I got this book for free but definitely worth the 20ish dollars listed here. I don,t think you will regret getting this book.
