Schaums Outline of Intermediate Accounting I, Second Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaums Outline of Intermediate Accounting I, Second Edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

I've only used this for three chapters and it's already more than paid for itself. It's great. It distills the ridiculous amount of content from my accounting text down to the essentials AND GIVES EXAMPLES in line. No, it won't replace your text, most likely, but it'll come darn close. I read this first, then my accounting text. Makes my comprehension level of my text skyrocket as I already have a general idea going in. Well worth its cost.

Management: Leading and Collaborating in the Competitive World Review

Management: Leading and Collaborating in the Competitive World
Average Reviews:

This book is unique in its pedagogical approach. Other management textbooks are just characterized with sound theoretical depth and textual density. However, "Management: The New Competitive Landscape" is distinguished by the capability of its authors to seamlessly blend the theoretical concept with practical, real-life advice using an exceptionally engaging conversational style. Holding a bachelor's degree in business administration as well as an MBA in Management, I completed several management classes and researched advanced management literature in many books. However, I decided to purchase this introductory management reference due to its unprecedented pedagogical style. When I opened the book in the store, I felt like attending a live lecture from the authors directly capturing their knowledge and experiential advice. Thus I learned from this book big time especially from the on-the-job perspective.

Bateman and Snell's "Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World" is a text with a fully modernized functional approach. This text is maintaining the four traditional functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, while modernizing and re-visioning the concepts as delivering strategic value, building a dynamic organization, mobilizing people, and learning and changing. Bateman/Snell's results-oriented approach is a unique hallmark of this textbook. In this ever more competitive environment, there are five essential types of performance, on which the organization beats, equals, or loses to the competition which are cost, quality, speed, innovation and service. These five performance dimensions, when done well, deliver value to the customer and competitive advantage to you and your organization. Throughout the text Bateman & Snell remind students of these five dimensions and their impact on the 'bottom line' with marginal icons contributing to the leadership and collaboration theme, which is the key to successful management. People working with one another, rather than against, is essential to competitive advantage.

The Guide to Understanding Financial Statements Review

The Guide to Understanding Financial Statements
Average Reviews:

This book is amazing in that it gives a comprehensive, consise, and simple explanation for finicial statements. I have read many such books, yet this tops them all for its relative simplicity while still being able to get across its point. I would recommend this book to any beginning accountant, manager, or investor. This book shed light on information overlooked by unexperienced businessmen and is a great buy.

This guide to understanding financial statements assumes no prior knowledge of accounting or mathematics, or even business sophistication. It contains numerous worked-out examples and sample balance sheets which clarify explanations, while end-of-chapter questions make the book useful for self-study and training programmes. Now in its second edition, it features new and expanded coverage of cash flow analysis, Subchapter S corporations, LIFO/FIFO accounting and profit margin analysis.

Schaum's Outline Introduction to Mathematical Economics Review

Schaum's Outline Introduction to Mathematical Economics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent book for non-quant jockeys who want to brush up on their mathematical skills for upper-level or graduate-level econ courses. The best strength of the book is its organization. After a chapter on introduction and discussion of a mathematical technique or theory, a chapter on the technique's application is presented. This is an excellent way to not only reinforce the material but demonstrate its applications and relavence to economics.
However, several caveats should be noted:
First, I believe that the ideal reader should already have some exposure to calculus. For instance, Dowling discusses the fundamentals of differentiation in about 26 pages, which is far too little if one is learning calculus from scratch. If the reader already has some exposure to calculus (as I did), then Dowling's chapters on differentiation and integration could be used as review.
Second, the learning curve really steepens in the latter chapters when Dowling discusses differential equations as he appears to sacrifice detailed explanations for brevity.
Lastly, I think the reader would be best served to use this book as a resource and not just as the main text. Mathematical Economics is a very broad and challenging subject, and as good as this book is, it only scratches the surface of a complex topic. I would also recommend "Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics" by Alpha Chiang.
Highly recommended.

Investments (McGraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Finance, Insurance, and Real Est) Review

Investments (McGraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Finance, Insurance, and Real Est)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a tremendous amount of valuable information for those of us who want to understand what investments are actually about. There is a lot more to it than the simple bromides peddled in the popular press and media. Yet, when you get some basic concepts down, they become easier to understand and evaluate. The popular press is misleading in its oversimplification and silly statements (like "no one is buying today").
I want to praise this edition's organization. Since it is a text designed for use by students, the fifth edition I used is organized most helpfully. Each chapter has an overview and there are concept check questions at key points of the text that help you assess if you really understood the information you just read. The main points are restated in a concise summary at the end of each chapter and you can review the key terms to make sure you are absorbing the vocabulary.
There are valuable websites listed along the way for additional and related information. The authors and publisher also provide a website with materials including spreadsheets directly related to this book. The part of the site with online quizzes has a few typos and scoring errors, and that should be fixed, but the online materials are generally ok.
The chapter problems are another matter. Some are really projects and should be separated, I feel, from the study questions. They are good to do if you have the time and will certainly help your learning, but they can take some time to work through.
Some of the questions are very simple and are really a quick concept check and they seem out of place when placed along side the "projects". One VERY NICE feature of the questions is the inclusion of sample CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam questions. This is very useful for those of us thinking about preparing for that process.
It is also worth getting the Solutions Manual. ISBN 0-07-233921-7. Don't by a mismatched solutions manual! As you work through the problems, especially the "projects" it is nice to see how these problems are handled by the authors.
