Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 11th Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 11th Edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

This book is probably good for high school physics. I am in a physics for non-majors course in college and I found the material in the book to be not in-depth enough. To be honest I found it relatively useless to consult when I had a tough question and needed some help. There are better books out there. I just ordered 3 books that were recommended to me: "The Physics Problem Solver" by James Ogden, "How To Solve Physics Problems and Make The Grade" by Robert M. Oman and Daniel M. Oman and "3,000 Solved Problems in Physics" by Alvin Halpern.
Don't bother with this book if you feel lost in physics because it won't really help you.

More than 500,000 students have purchased previous editions of this book! That's because this powerful study tool offers clear explanations and constant reinforcements, so that students quickly grasp this potentially difficult subject matter. It takes students from vectors to thermodynamics to applied nuclear physics, teaching effective problem-solving skills. The numerous, valuable appendixes make often-needed, basic information easy to find quickly, so this book is also an excellent reference.

The new edition of this best-selling book gives users a solid grasp of the principles of general physics through their application to a large number of carefully selected problems. The Ninth Edition features a new order of presentation that reflects the current physics curriculum and textbooks. Existing problems have been updated, and new problems have been added that deal with more realistic and practical situations, including those in the life sciences.

This introduction to biophysics is very well written and covers the basics in a very clear and easy to follow manner. The discussion on entropy was particularly clear and better than most physics textbooks treatments of the subject. I would definitely recommend it to those with even a basic knowledge of physics.

Beginning Physics II: Waves, Electromagnetism, Optics and Modern Physics Review

Beginning Physics II: Waves, Electromagnetism, Optics and Modern Physics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Therefore, it does not, to my way of thinking, worth to buy it if Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) is on stock. However, if this book, which I did not buy, is out of print. Then I have got another talk.
Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed. More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).
I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you in more than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.
(Dear readers: Please note that I have rated only the modern physics chapters of this book).

I'm an AP Physics teacher, and let me tell you, this book was a lifesaver for me the first year I taught the course. The amount of information that is available via the College Board and other online sources is overwhelming, to say the least. I floundered around for awhile during my first year until this book was recommended to me by our AP coordinator.
I love that the authors were able to succinctly cover all of the topics on the AP Physics B exam (I cannot speak to the C material as I do not teach that course). The chapters are well-organized, efficient, and easy for students to read. The style of the Multiple Choice and Free Response questions in the book for is an accurate reflection of the College Board's style and students gain valuable experience by reading them. The other AP Physics Review guides out there tend to be bloated with excessive information and are not easily approachable by any stretch of the imagination. This book is far and away the best out of the various guides I've examined.
The goal of this book is to prepare students for the exam, and I tell my students it's the best $12 they will ever spend when it comes to earning college credit.

Fundamentals of Optics 4th Ed Pub: McGraw Hill (Electromagnetics) Review

Fundamentals of Optics 4th Ed Pub: McGraw Hill (Electromagnetics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has stood the test of time as one of the classic textbooks of physics. It ranks up there with Reitz, Milford & Christy ("Foundations of Electromagnetic Theory") and Symon ("Mechanics") as one of the most-used textbooks in the upper-division undergraduate physics curriculum, and for very good reasons. While not detailed enough for graduate-level treatments (the standard in this case is Born and Wolf, "Principles of Optics"), as its title states, "Fundamentals of Optics" starts with the assumption that the reader knows absolutely nothing about optics and goes from there. Without getting bogged down in daunting mathematics (see "Principles of Optics" for that!), "Fundamentals of Optics" covers ALL of the main points of optics in a very consistently clear and concise manner, so much so that, after twenty years in the business of optical engineering, this book is STILL the first book I go to when I need to review a fundamental optical phenomenon (for actual optical engineering, I still rely on Smith, "Modern Optical Engineering"). Interestingly, some of the more complex aspects of Optics are handled better as chapters in "Fundamentals of Optics" than they are in whole books devoted to these topics! For example, the chapters in "Fundamentals of Optics" that deal with crystal optics and birefringence are pretty much the best treatments that I have ever found that actually explain the phenomenology without getting lost in the finer details. I refer to these chapters all the time in my work with solid-state lasers.
This is a great book, and you won't regret owning it.

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many freshman college physics textbooks are just awful. They often go on and on about what is obvious and gloss over the finer points...and of course there are no examples. This is where this book comes in. As in all Schaum's outlines, for each topic there are a few pages of theory including equations, then some problems with the solutions worked out extensively, and then finally some problems with the answers but no extensive solution. The format of the outline is the same that you should expect in any two semester college freshman physics sequence. The first part of the book is an explanation of vectors, newtonian mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics. The second part of the book follows the usual second semester of freshman physics - electricity, magnetism, and optics. The final seven chapters of the outline are an introduction to modern physics, which engineers and physics students would normally take after they finish the two semester freshman physics sequence. A note of caution - do not buy the attractively named "Schaums Outline of Physics for Engineering and Science". It is chocked full of errors! Instead, stay with this old reliable title. It is the best. This is the very recently released 10th edition, so Amazon does not show the table of contents. I do that here so you can compare it to the 9th edition and see if it is worth the upgrade.

3,000 Solved Problems in Physics (Schaum's Solved Problems) (Schaum's Solved Problems Series)
Average Reviews:

This remains my favorite book for physics problem solving since I began using it in 1988. From the basics of vector algebra to the principles of modern physics, the student will find a single source for solved problems (both non-calculus and calculus based). The mathematical notation is clean and simple and the solution to each problem is found immediately beneath it (not hidden at the end of the chapter or collected in the back of the book). The diagrams are elegant and clear, as well, with a minimum of "cute" (and usually irrelevant) materials. The student can add this book to their reference library and it serves as one of the best review texts for the standardized tests (such as the GRE and the MCAT).

Physical Science Review

Physical Science
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have taught two semesters of college level physical science from this textbook (7th ed.), and I think it continues to find the right balance between depth and breadth.
Tillery does a nice job of integrating four massive scientific fields (physics, chemistry, astronomy, and earth science). Given the ambitious scope of the text, he provides a nice introduction to each of these disciplines.
The book is carefully designed to be user-friendly. It contains answers to many of the end-of-chapter exercises. It also includes a large number of worked examples and practice problems throughout the body of the text. These features make the book useful for self study as well.
Most of the figures are well-designed; the careful illustrations and accompanying captions help make important scientific concepts accessible to a wide audience.
Overall, this is a solid textbook. Although physical science is a course which many students dread, this book gives them the opportunity to succeed. It is appropriate for anyone attempting to learn physical science at the introductory college level.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Physical Science

Physical Science, Eighth Edition, is a straightforward, easy-to-read, but substantial introduction to the fundamental behavior of matter and energy. It is intended to serve the needs of non-science majors who are required to complete one or more physical science courses. It offers exceptional, straight-forward writing, complimented with useful pedagogical tools.
Physical Science introduces basic concepts and key ideas while providing opportunities for students to learn reasoning skills and a new way of thinking about their environment. No prior work in science is assumed. The text offers students complete coverage of the physical sciences with a level of explanation and detail appropriate for all students.
The sequence of chapters in Physical Science is flexible, and the instructor can determine topic sequence and depth of coverage as needed. The materials are also designed to support a conceptual approach, or a combined conceptual and problem-solving approach. With laboratory studies, the text contains enough material for the instructor to select a sequence for a two-semester course. It can also serve as a text in a one-semester physics and chemistry course.

Advanced Physics Demystified Review

Advanced Physics Demystified
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book specifically covers most of what you would learn in a two semester college freshman level engineering physics sequence, with a little modern physics and even some astronomy thrown in. There are plenty of examples and explanations, and if you buy it you'll get your money's worth if freshman physics is what you wish to review or study. However, I think Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outlines) is a better bet. It is more thorough in its coverage, and there are more problems but not quite as much explanation. For example, I don't think that this book gives nearly enough coverage of mechanics, fluids, and in particular optics, that it is really complete. Schaum's covers these subjects extensively, mainly through problems sets rather than prose, though.
If you are just learning physics, get both books. If it is a review or reference you need, go strictly with Schaum's.

Haha... just the day before AP Physics C Exam, I decided to give my brain a little rest from constant E&M preparation and surf the web for a while.
This book, based on my interpretations, lacks depth for AP Physics C.
Just like the Immortalix pointed out in the comments on author's review, there are not a lot of detailed descriptions or even some formulas on the curriculum for Physics C in the book. For instance, book only mentions inductors for a page and nothing more. Also, book doesn't even have a partial derivative (which is fairly simple) to get the electric field. If the difficulty of the AP Physics C question was just plugging the numbers in for the unknown variable, which is difficulty of AP Physics B, it would be fine. However, Physics C is not. I personaly found Princeton Review much better for AP Physics C than McGrawHill because it had lots of examples where you can get the GIST of doing the questions and also know more specific type of things that I must look for when using certain laws. 5 steps to 5 felt too fundamental oriented and lots of time I ended up searching somewhere else for an answer. As a result, McGrawHill book didn't even get a bent mark in the middle (Because I didn't open it enough).
If this book was just for the AP Physics B, hands down this book is better than Princeton Review. I found the explanations and tone of the writings much more friendly and easier to approach to.
However, I would not recommend it to AP Physics C students because you will not get anything out of it. Unless, you have no idea what Physics is about.

Schaum's Easy Outline Applied Physics Review

My school made us buy what is possibly the WORST textbook I have ever read (Physics by James S. Walker). It was like reading hieroglyphics. But the Schaum's book helped me keep my 4.0. This little book of # pages for $10 replaced a 1,248 page monstrosity (no joke) that cost $137! I never had to read one chapter of the Walker book because this little book helped me understand the concepts and do all the problems without wasting my time on gibberish. The best $10 you'll spend on a textbook.

Being a college student,I do not agree with the first review at all. This is a great book. It covers the FUNDAMENTALS of college algebra, discrete mathematics, trigonometry, analytic geomety, and calculus. This study guide is the best tutor you could ask for. It really produces results without overwhelming you with unnecessary details. You get a complete overview of the subject. Plus you get plenty of practice exercises to test your skills!! It's perfect for preparing you for any exam. You'll see it when you get your test results. I highly recommend it. Try it for yourself before believing negative reviews.
