Several months ago I decided to teach myself French. As a sidenote: I've studied Spanish and German for about 8 years each, lived in Germany and Ecuador for 3 months each, and have reached a level of fluency in those languages where I can read books without too much trouble. With that in mind, I came into this French-learning project with a good idea of how languages work and how to learn them. I used an approach based around several free websites, a great podcast, and this book (links to the other things are below). Let me say that this book is by far the best language investment I've ever made. The book starts with simple sentences (e.g. "Marc is French. Julie is American. Marc is a friend of Julie.") and progresses up till you're eventually reading French literature. Along the way you encounter a lot of useful vocabulary which, if you learn the words, will give you a strong foundation to read other French works. The only criticism I have of the book is that it doesn't give you any indication of how the words should be pronounced, though I think the makers of the book assume you're using the book in conjunction with an actual French class, so this is a minor point. If you are approaching the book as I did, however, and don't have a strong understanding of how French pronunciation works, I'd suggest using some of the other resources that I list below before you begin the book.
In learning French my way, I used a few really useful resources. [...] yet cover grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. Using any of them you learn a lot of words and, even better, the words you come across are ones actually used in real French conversation or writing.
After about ten weeks of learning French my way, I'm reading a book in French. Like, a real book. I highly recommend that you lay out a lesson plan for yourself and dive into these resources. This book, along with the other pieces that I listed, make learning French interesting, humorous, and fun. Good luck!
