CompTIA A+ Certification Practice Exams (Exams 220-701 & 220-702) (Certification Press) Review

This has to be one of my favorite study books for the A+ Exam. The price is reasonable, and I feel it's a better study experience over brain dumps and other resources I've studied with. I've let 2 other people borrow this book with the main A+ book this accompanies and it helped them pass the test.

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications Review

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications
Average Reviews:

This book was an extremely poor pick. The theory behind the OSI Reference Model is not given at all. The first 3 layers are covered to some basic extent. Overall, the book seems to be a series of long PowerPoint presentations put together in book format. By PowerPoint presentations, I am referring to each page being a list of "bullet-point" phrases that is only there to give a reader a guideline for the lecture she is hearing. Unfortunately, there is no accompanying lecture, so the presentation is totally useless. Altogether, this was a waste of money.

The OSI (Open System Interconnection) reference model is the basis of modern data network design, but it underlines the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well. For voice engineers learning how to send services over data networks, and for Internet engineers learning how to tap into the PSTN, the OSI model is an ideal point of reference. This book covers roles, functions, definitions and the fundamentals that are required of entry-level personnel.

Mike Meyers' Linux+ Certification Passport (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport) Review

Mike Meyers' Linux+ Certification Passport (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport)
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Linux+ Passport Book because I had great success and enjoyed reading the A+ Passport Book from the same company. Unfortunately, the Linux+ Passport book feels very rushed and incomplete.
There are many instances where the author keeps mentioning "this technology is not used anymore because the Comptia objectives are from 2004."
This was good to know the first time, but after reading something similar 6 or 7+ times, you wish the author would teach more on Linux instead of complain how outdated the Linux+ objectives are. Also in some cases, the author would mention, "you'll have to make your own decision whether to study ________ more since the objectives are of October 2004." Some parts of the book would briefly introduce a topic, and then tell you to decide whether or not you think this information is important for the test. If you want to research it more, they give you a bunch of internet links.
One bright note is the CD that comes with the book, the tests are great, the explanations are short and too the point, and theres over 160 practice questions.
If your looking for a Linux+ book I wholeheartedly recommend the Comptia Linux+ Certification Study Guide, by Robb H Tracy. The book is about 3 times bigger, but the information flows well, and the analysis for each linux objective is indepth and complete.
I bought both since they were the latest Linux+ books available at the time. Unless the Linux+ Passport book has any major revisions soon, you should save your money and borrow but not buy this book.

Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport, Third Edition (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport) Review

Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport, Third Edition (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport)
Average Reviews:

I am MCSE, A+, and CCNA certified and used this book as part of my preparation for the CompTia A+ exams.
This book presents a decent overview of the CompTia A+ exam objectives, but lacks sufficient detail to actually pass the test without supplementing the material. I have provided 2 recommendations at the bottom of this review.
The book covers both areas of the exam (hardware and OS), and provides a CD with tice tests. I noticed the review questions at the end of each chapter lacked worthwhile explanations, which necessitated searching through the text to figure out why you may have missed a particular question.
This book overall presents a decent, but minimal, overview of both the hardware and operating system exams and should be used in conjunction with Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" classic (ISBN: 0789727455), and Exam Cram's book (ISBN: 078983043x).

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press) Review

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press)
Average Reviews:

While this is an informative book, especially concerning Microsoft networking utilities and features, there were definitely some areas on the Network+ 2009 N10-004 test (just took it today, and passed, but not as well as I would have liked) that were not well covered in this book. The areas that could definitely use more attention were CIDR-based sub-netting and physical facility equipment and tools. There was a lot of emphasis on troubleshooting scenarios as well. While the book (content/quizzes/test) focuses many questions around Microsoft tools/utilities, I experienced next to no Microsoft-centric questions on the actual test. (The test is actually very vendor neutral)
I realize it is not easy to create a test prep book like this, and I appreciate authors like Glen providing these resources. But at the same time, it is hard for any book to provide all possible knowledge needed for a test like this.

Network+ Certification Study Guide, Third Edition (Certification Study Guides) Review

Network+ Certification Study Guide, Third Edition (Certification Study Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an Associate professor at a community college and have been teaching Network+ for more than 10 years. After the recent certification exam change I had to review what was out there for the new exam. I am so glad this book was one I decided to take a look at. The book is to the point... check out the number of pages out there in some of the other study guides. Glen has a practical down-to-earth style of writing that makes it easier for students to get a handle on new concepts. The review questions at the end of the chapter are really good. I also love how the book has hands-on labs right in the chapters, and if that is not enough there is a whole lab manual that comes on the cd. Finally, if all this isn't enough there is a practice exam that comes on the cd as well. Wow, quite a bit for the money.
With that said there are a couple minor tweaks that need to be made in the next edition.
1. The requirements listed for the Network+ exam in the intro are for the old exam.
2. I would like to have seen "N10-004" or "Network+ 2009 exam" somewhere on the front or back cover. I had to look at the publishing date to make sure I had the
right book for the new exam.
3. The practice exam that came on the cd is good but there is no way to control what chapters or exam domains you want to pull questions from.
With that said, I am looking forward to using this book over the next few years and will be the first in line for the 5th Edition.
