Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 11th Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 11th Edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

This book is probably good for high school physics. I am in a physics for non-majors course in college and I found the material in the book to be not in-depth enough. To be honest I found it relatively useless to consult when I had a tough question and needed some help. There are better books out there. I just ordered 3 books that were recommended to me: "The Physics Problem Solver" by James Ogden, "How To Solve Physics Problems and Make The Grade" by Robert M. Oman and Daniel M. Oman and "3,000 Solved Problems in Physics" by Alvin Halpern.
Don't bother with this book if you feel lost in physics because it won't really help you.

More than 500,000 students have purchased previous editions of this book! That's because this powerful study tool offers clear explanations and constant reinforcements, so that students quickly grasp this potentially difficult subject matter. It takes students from vectors to thermodynamics to applied nuclear physics, teaching effective problem-solving skills. The numerous, valuable appendixes make often-needed, basic information easy to find quickly, so this book is also an excellent reference.

The new edition of this best-selling book gives users a solid grasp of the principles of general physics through their application to a large number of carefully selected problems. The Ninth Edition features a new order of presentation that reflects the current physics curriculum and textbooks. Existing problems have been updated, and new problems have been added that deal with more realistic and practical situations, including those in the life sciences.

Schaums Outline of Statistics, Fourth Edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

I have used this book as a reference for understanding and solving various types of statistics problems for over ten years. It makes application of statistics concepts to real world problems easy because it contains many good example problems that are solved for the reader. One statistics teacher complemented me on my use of the book because it is very difficult to use the information in other textbooks on problems because they contain very few solved examples. I own a few other statistics books but this one is always the most useful.

Beginning with the "How To Use This Book" and "How To Excel in Your Physics Course", (especially the latter) and throughout its pages, this is, without a doubt in this readers opinion, the very best book on the subject I have found to date (And I have many). It puts you through the paces. If you want to know this subject and excel in it, these authors have placed before you the practice you will need. I recommend this book highly for your first experiences in this subject. Starting with the mathematical background required; then on to Classical through Special Relativity. It covers each and every topic, in a clear, concise method that enhances learning and improves retention greatly in each and every area. It's a great reference to have on the shelf. EXCELLENT! My thanks to the authors. Your book has helped me much more than I ever expected.

Schaum's Outline of Intermediate Accounting II, 2ed (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of Intermediate Accounting II, 2ed (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

Thus far, I have been fairly impressed with the quality and consistency of Schaum's Outlines. While I can't fairly evaluate this book's usefulness to CPA candidates, I believe that Baruch Englard's Intermediate Accounting II provides an excellent supplement to those pursuing the CFA curriculum or students studying accounting.
I appreciated Englard's attention to accuracy - I found few errors or discrepancies (but hey that could just be me!). To his credit, he also has a good way of explaining things.
The book's copyright is 1992, but the chapter material was still very relevant. The fundamental concepts presented in the book seem to have lasting value.
Most valuable to me were chapters covering Long-Term Liabilities, Dilutive Securities and Earnings Per Share, Revenue Recognition Issues, Accounting for Leases, Statement of Cash Flows, Accounting for Pensions and Deferred Income Taxes. All of these topics are currently studied under the CFA curriculum. Englard's accounting perspective broadens the financial analysts focus and thus makes the book a very worthwhile read.
Chapter end review problems provide readers with ample opportunity to further understand concepts. I commend Schaum's Outlines for being consistent with this general format. It facilitates one's learning and increased interest in topical studies.

I bought this and the Schaum's "College Chemistry" to get my HS son up to speed for his HS Honors Chemistry course. (I had several years of chem in college.) I found this one much too simplistic to the point of being confusing in that they leave out a lot. On the other hand, the Schaum's "College Chemistry" is just perfect. The worked examples in THAT book are clear and the text is fairly comprehensive. In THAT book there are lots of extra examples to work on.

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2010-2011 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) Review

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2010-2011 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach AP World History, and I bought this guide for one of my students who was not able to afford one. And, after he used it to raise his scores overall, I concluded that it was a good "nutshell" and took a harder look at it.
Apart from the fact that I have several national colleagues who recommend it, my thoughts are that this book does an excellent job explaining - in very easy, even calm - language just "how" to tackle multiple choice and essay questions on the AP World History examination. However, it is weak on content. So, the other reviewer in this thread is exactly right when he suggests that this nutshell and the Princeton (and I would add Kaplan) should be purchased as a set. Together and used diligently as the AP World History course progresses, I cannot see how they would fail to provide something of a "boost," as well as making the student more confident as he or she works through the review exercises.
But, IMPORTANT NOTE. There is a distinct possibility that the College Board may be making significant changes to the format of the AP World History examination starting in academic year 2011-2012. So, if you are thinking about a "used" purchase in that year or later, please check the College Board's website to make sure that this book or earlier printings will serve. It likely will not, at least for any essay portion, so it is something to bear in mind before the money is spent!

Beginning Physics II: Waves, Electromagnetism, Optics and Modern Physics Review

Beginning Physics II: Waves, Electromagnetism, Optics and Modern Physics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Therefore, it does not, to my way of thinking, worth to buy it if Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) is on stock. However, if this book, which I did not buy, is out of print. Then I have got another talk.
Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed. More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).
I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you in more than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.
(Dear readers: Please note that I have rated only the modern physics chapters of this book).

I'm an AP Physics teacher, and let me tell you, this book was a lifesaver for me the first year I taught the course. The amount of information that is available via the College Board and other online sources is overwhelming, to say the least. I floundered around for awhile during my first year until this book was recommended to me by our AP coordinator.
I love that the authors were able to succinctly cover all of the topics on the AP Physics B exam (I cannot speak to the C material as I do not teach that course). The chapters are well-organized, efficient, and easy for students to read. The style of the Multiple Choice and Free Response questions in the book for is an accurate reflection of the College Board's style and students gain valuable experience by reading them. The other AP Physics Review guides out there tend to be bloated with excessive information and are not easily approachable by any stretch of the imagination. This book is far and away the best out of the various guides I've examined.
The goal of this book is to prepare students for the exam, and I tell my students it's the best $12 they will ever spend when it comes to earning college credit.

For all those who thought they had substantial mathematical skills and overall capacity for learning chemistry (and realized they were sorely mistaken by the third lecture), THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I am a reasonably intelligent person and a really good student, but my ego shrank to infinitesmal proportions when I tried chem in preparation for medical training.
Goldberg's written word sounds like you're sitting in a lecture, only clearer. Don't give up, just get the right way to learn it. Goldberg's writing is a good start.

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology (Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who, like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.

Schaum's Outline of Operations Management Review

Schaum's Outline of Operations Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Professor Monks has done an excellent job of summarizing and giving worked out problems for a very useful field of industry that is often neglected in pure and applied mathematics. This neglect, especially at the pre-college level but also at higher levels, makes it harder for management and operations research college instructors to convey the quantitative methods to their students. These methods are fascinating and include statistical forecasting (with time series and exponential smoothing, correlation, regression), statistical quality control, production scheduling and control (linear programming, dynamic programming), manufacturing /service and maintenance (queuing theory, reliability, simulation, calculus), budgeting, inventory, etc. I recommend this book for everybody in business for themselves or for others and for students at all levels in order to tie in their studies more practically with the real economic world. In addition, the more people are familiar with the methods, the less employment mistakes will be made since so many of the methods interact with hiring, firing, temporary layoffs, etc. With more talent in the field, alternative methods can be developed and tried (for example, present theory assumes that a lot of things involve independent or non-influencing events, but a lot of events are very interdependent and the theory needs far more development there - see my review of Castillo).

Schaum's Outline of Principles of Accounting I (Schaum's) Review

Schaum's Outline of Principles of Accounting I (Schaum's)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit it. I used to be intimidated with accounting. Its concepts were somewhat of a mystery. Debits and credits, journals and ledgers, balance sheets and income statements, adjusting entries, etc. You get the picture.
A year and a half ago, I bought this book. I now enjoy accounting because the authors were so successful and effective in teaching its precepts. Lerner and Cashin have turned muddy water into a clear pool. Why weren't my college professors so effective?
I read this book from cover to cover. I'm hoping that others will benefit as much as I have from this book. Chapters cover: accounting concepts, financial statements, transactional classification, adjusting and closing procedures, business and merchandising worksheets, methods of valuing inventory, receivables, cash and its control, payroll, and also property plant and equipment
The magic of this book revolves around lucid explanations and practical examples. The authors teach the principles, provide numerous examples and then afford the reader the opportunity to apply the lessons material. The book takes you step by step and builds upon the fundamentals.
If you take the time to do the chapter end problems, you should benefit greatly from this introduction to accounting.
Truly, I think the book is a wonderful resource and guide.

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications Review

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications
Average Reviews:

This book was an extremely poor pick. The theory behind the OSI Reference Model is not given at all. The first 3 layers are covered to some basic extent. Overall, the book seems to be a series of long PowerPoint presentations put together in book format. By PowerPoint presentations, I am referring to each page being a list of "bullet-point" phrases that is only there to give a reader a guideline for the lecture she is hearing. Unfortunately, there is no accompanying lecture, so the presentation is totally useless. Altogether, this was a waste of money.

The OSI (Open System Interconnection) reference model is the basis of modern data network design, but it underlines the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well. For voice engineers learning how to send services over data networks, and for Internet engineers learning how to tap into the PSTN, the OSI model is an ideal point of reference. This book covers roles, functions, definitions and the fundamentals that are required of entry-level personnel.

Geometry DeMYSTiFieD, 2nd Edition Review

Geometry DeMYSTiFieD, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
because of the topic coverage. I picked this up because, though a math teacher, I really don't like Geometry. Never have. This book covers some of what a high school student would need in just a few chapters. So, Why aren't I recommending it to students needing help? Because the author completely skips proofs, which is what most students are having trouble with. It also has no chapter dealing with circles and theorems related to them. What it does cover it covers in a highly interesting and original way (why does a stool have three legs instead of four?). It is also filled with topics not covered in a high school geometry course, but which are very interesting on their own. Given the authors other books' titles, this is perhaps "geometry for electricians and hobbyists". If you are someone with bad memories of geometry, but you would like to try revisiting it, then this is highly recommended. It would also be a good outside source for students doing well in Geometry but wanting to read about some higher level topics (including 3 - 4 - and higher dimensional geometry.) The book has loads of multiple choice test questions, so you can see how well you are understanding what you are reading, but it has no detailed solutions in the back--just the correct answers. (techinical point: readers should know that the author teaches polar coordinates "backwards" from the way we teach it in Trigonometry. The form is (r, theta), NOT (theta, r).)

Trying to understand geometry but feel like you're stuck in another dimension? Here's your solution. Geometry Demystified, Second Edition helps you grasp the essential concepts with ease.
Written in a step-by-step format, this practical guide begins with two dimensions, reviewing points, lines, angles, and distances, then covers triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, and the Cartesian plane. The book goes on to discuss three dimensions, explaining surface area, volume, vectors, Cartesian three-space, alternative coordinates, hyperspace, and warped space.
