Mammography and Breast Imaging: Just The Facts Review

Mammography and Breast Imaging: Just The Facts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is excellent! I took the 4 day course from MTMI in WI, which was a great start, but the material covered wasn't everything on the Registry.
I used the 6 page outline provided by the ARRT, called Content Specifications for the Examination in Mammography, to guide my studying.
Because this book has an Index in the back, I was able to quickly look up the topics mentioned on the ARRT outline. I was shocked and delighted that the format of the book and heading titles closely match that on the outline! It made studying very easy.
As the title suggests, the content of the book is 'just the facts'. At the beginning of each chapter are vocab words with detailed descriptions. The text that follows includes diagrahms, photos, and tables. The end of the chapter has review questions with detailed answers in the back of the book. I was dissapointed that it didn't have mock registry questions, but it turns out that wasn't necessary.
This book has everything you need. Unlike x-ray school, learning this modality was all self-directed. I could have never passed the test (92%) w/o this book and the MTMI workshop!

Katzung & Trevor's Pharmacology Examination and Board Review: Eighth Edition (LANGE Basic Science) Review

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology Examination and Board Review: Eighth Edition (LANGE Basic Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, 4th Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series) for my entire second year of medical school. I recently purchased this book, and although I can't give a thorough post-Step 1 review yet, I do prefer studying (for exams and Step 1) from this book rather than Lippincott's.
The chapters are more lined up with the way my pharmacology class is set up, and it (briefly) includes lower-yield topics covered on my exams but not heavily emphasized on the Step 1. These topics are readily identifiable, however. The book itself includes an alphabetical listing of the 200 or so most tested drugs on Step 1, along with a brief description of the mechanism of action, toxicity, and the corresponding chapter or chapters that discuss this drug. Within each chapter, key drugs are listed in table format. Lippincott's seems less organized, and each chapter is organized differently than the next, making it more difficult to orient yourself when moving on to subsequent chapters.
This book does a better job integrating other relevant subjects into the chapter. For example, there is a decent immunology review in the chapter that discusses immune modifying drugs. Also, in every chapter you will find "Skill-Keeper" questions that test your comprehension of previous chapters. Very helpful, and lacking in Lippincott's
Katzung also has 10-15 (roughly) end-of-chapter review questions, along with two 120 question comprehensive exams, for a total of nearly 3 times as many questions as in Lippicott's. Some people may not need questions, but I do. They show me what I do know and create the desire to learn (and remember) what I don't. These questions are difficult and useful as a study aid even after you have used them to quiz yourself.
Katzung also has helpful figures and tables on nearly every page to satisfy visual learners like myself. While they are not as good as Lippincott's (which is in full color, unlike the black and blue format of Katzung), they are helpful.
All in all, you can't go wrong with either one. Both are A- in First Aid. I simply prefer Katzung because of the list of 200 most commonly tested drugs and the numerous questions and 2 comprehensive exams at the end. Lippincott's 4th edition was published more recently, though, and I have noticed that it includes some newer drugs that aren't in this book. I've been told new drugs are fair game, so that is something to keep in mind.

I bought this and the Schaum's "College Chemistry" to get my HS son up to speed for his HS Honors Chemistry course. (I had several years of chem in college.) I found this one much too simplistic to the point of being confusing in that they leave out a lot. On the other hand, the Schaum's "College Chemistry" is just perfect. The worked examples in THAT book are clear and the text is fairly comprehensive. In THAT book there are lots of extra examples to work on.

Deja Review Emergency Medicine, 2nd Edition Review

Deja Review Emergency Medicine, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am currently a fourth year medical student going into emergency medicine. I really wanted to do well for my clerkships so I read the basic EM books that many students read such as first aid. A friend who actually was a reviewer for the book let me borrow it a few weeks during my clerkship. I read via the book and wished I had this book earlier! I tried to do a review below with positives and negatives.
Overview: This is the second edition but did read the first edition as a third year for a brief two week rotation. The Deja Review series is very similar to the First Aid series or Recall which follows a question and answer format which I prefer much more than the fact-type books. Since i have read both recall and First Aid I do have something to compare it to. It has a nice clean attractive look full of useful high-yield information, charts, and vignettes.
I'll start with the negatives:
1. Size: While a great book it is kind of on the bigger size to carry in the ED. I usually read it in between patients or at home and used Pocket EM for my on the go stuff.
2. Organization: not really a bad depending how you like to learn. It is organized by organ system which is what I prefer to learn by so I really don't see this as a negative. I know some of my friends that prefer chief complaints.
3. Not sure if this is a negative but it is not a text book. While awesome as a "pimp" book, it does not really explain pathophysiology like Rosen's but that is to be expected since this book is designed as a question/answer book. Just something to keep in mind.
Positive:
1. Many good things to say, the biggest seller for me is the high-yield information that was covered in this book. The residents and attendings I worked with asked me many "pimp" questions in this book which at the end of the day is important and helps you stand out.
2. Vignettes: I really liked the clinical vignettes at the end of each chapter. It helped to reinforce the stuff I read in the chapter. These vignettes presented bread and butter cases so no mystery. The thing I really thought was unique about this book was the stimulus section. This is similar to the the section for the written boards that residents take each year. It was short and wish there was more but had good images and great cases.
3. Charts: High-yield charts that presented key information like ped vitals and tox antidotes, very well done.Overall:
I think this is an excellent review book that any med student interested in EM would find very useful. With the combination of its high yield questions, clinical cases, and stimulus section it really hits all the main points. I got this book for free but definitely worth the 20ish dollars listed here. I don,t think you will regret getting this book.

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2010-2011 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) Review

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2010-2011 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach AP World History, and I bought this guide for one of my students who was not able to afford one. And, after he used it to raise his scores overall, I concluded that it was a good "nutshell" and took a harder look at it.
Apart from the fact that I have several national colleagues who recommend it, my thoughts are that this book does an excellent job explaining - in very easy, even calm - language just "how" to tackle multiple choice and essay questions on the AP World History examination. However, it is weak on content. So, the other reviewer in this thread is exactly right when he suggests that this nutshell and the Princeton (and I would add Kaplan) should be purchased as a set. Together and used diligently as the AP World History course progresses, I cannot see how they would fail to provide something of a "boost," as well as making the student more confident as he or she works through the review exercises.
But, IMPORTANT NOTE. There is a distinct possibility that the College Board may be making significant changes to the format of the AP World History examination starting in academic year 2011-2012. So, if you are thinking about a "used" purchase in that year or later, please check the College Board's website to make sure that this book or earlier printings will serve. It likely will not, at least for any essay portion, so it is something to bear in mind before the money is spent!

This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead.

Emergency Medicine: Just the Facts, Second Edition Review

Emergency Medicine: Just the Facts, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to post a preliminary review - not because I don't have opinions about this book, but because I don't have the time to write an in depth one. I think it is great that this book exists as a means to prepare for EM exams. But it suffers GREATLY from a lack of editing and coherent organization. There are many, many, many errors (using Tintanelli #6 as reference). For example:
"Patients older than 40 years are unlikely to have rotator cuff tears."
I am not so sure about this, it doesn't make sense really.
Searching in the big T book, I find "Patients with rotator cuff tears are almost always older than 40 years of age: rotator cuff tears in the young are rare." !!!!!!
This can get very time consuming and confusing. Some chapters are written and organized quite well, others are nothing but a mess, with very poor organization - going back and forth arbitrarily between disease entities, adding something about the pregnant patient, back to the first disease, then to the second one, etc. etc. One example (not the worst) is the way HUS and HSP are presented. The chapter on stroke is organized very poorly, without a clear hierarchical (anatomic?) structure. I just don't find this a good way to put the picture together in my mind of a particular disease, gathering the relevant data and moving on. Also many diseases are spread throughout the book, piecemeal, with sometimes conflicting information. I think it would be much, much better to write conclusively about a disease entity in one place and one place only. I don't find it so helpful to have bits of Lyme disease spread around in infectious disease, neurology and non-traumatic musculoskeletal disorder chapters! Maybe that is just me. There are many, many simple mistakes ("peroneal" nerve, not "perineal") that make it seem like this book simply was not edited by someone who understood the material. Some of the chapters are excellent, as I mentioned, but many are very poorly organized with lots of filler, not particularly helpful or clear explanations and a lot left out. The two column, bulleted design, does not always work well, or, more often, is used poorly. There are other books that fill this niche - I would recommend looking at them before settling on this book simply because it has the standard color scheme on its cover. ;)

I'm an AP Physics teacher, and let me tell you, this book was a lifesaver for me the first year I taught the course. The amount of information that is available via the College Board and other online sources is overwhelming, to say the least. I floundered around for awhile during my first year until this book was recommended to me by our AP coordinator.
I love that the authors were able to succinctly cover all of the topics on the AP Physics B exam (I cannot speak to the C material as I do not teach that course). The chapters are well-organized, efficient, and easy for students to read. The style of the Multiple Choice and Free Response questions in the book for is an accurate reflection of the College Board's style and students gain valuable experience by reading them. The other AP Physics Review guides out there tend to be bloated with excessive information and are not easily approachable by any stretch of the imagination. This book is far and away the best out of the various guides I've examined.
The goal of this book is to prepare students for the exam, and I tell my students it's the best $12 they will ever spend when it comes to earning college credit.

For all those who thought they had substantial mathematical skills and overall capacity for learning chemistry (and realized they were sorely mistaken by the third lecture), THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I am a reasonably intelligent person and a really good student, but my ego shrank to infinitesmal proportions when I tried chem in preparation for medical training.

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology (Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who, like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.
