McGraw-Hill has done a considerable amount of research over the last few years, including research about students. To find out more about today's students, what they need, and how they behave, McGraw-Hill hired anthropologists to conduct an ethnographic research study on STUDENTS.We sent these scientists in to study where students live, work, play, study, and learn.Through several surveys and even ethnographic research, students have given us a better idea of the type of textbook they want to be using. When you view this slide, the types of characteristics students are looking for in a textbook probably won't surprise you. What you might be surprised by is that we actually went out and studied students to help generate ideas about the products we should be creating. –light and easy to carry–engaging and relevant to their own lives–inexpensive–supported by digital activities that help them learn and succeed in their courseTo bring Insel's Core Concepts of Health into the 21st century, we knew that we had to addresses today's changing student while at the same time remaining true to the theme of personal responsibility. In fact, we are determined to make Core Concepts in Health learning system more personal in a way that it can address the ways in which they want to learn. We also wanted to develop a system that is easier for you, the instructor, to use; a system that enables you to teach personal health in a more effective and efficient way. So this is what we have done:We've created Connect for Personal Health, which is now seamlessly and deeply integrated with Blackboard and Blackboard related course management systems.Connect is an interactive online learning system that provides interactive multimedia-driven activities and assessments, such as interactive quizzes, video activities, health assessments, internet research activities, online behavior change workbook, a fitness and nutrition log, and a multimedia ebook. Most activities and assessments are auto graded, entered into the grade book, and automatically uploaded to blackboard. This saves saves you time, holds your students accountable, and allows for seamless Course Management integration.Only one sign-on is needed for access to Blackboard and Connect, the grade book is integrated, and much much more. We've created LearnSmart for Personal Health, which is an adaptive learning system that assesses students' mastery of the core concepts and creates a individualized study plan for each student, which should result in higher student confidence, better test scores, and a different classroom experience in which students are prepared to discuss, brainstorm, and build skills. At the instructor, the time you spend preparing for and giving lectures is significantly reduced, if not eliminated, and you'll have the time to engage with your students rather than spoon feed them content that they will quickly forget. To address today's students' need for less expensive, more portable, and more relevant classroom tools, we are considering significantly lowering the price of Core Concepts in Health by providing the book in a three-hole punched, loose-leaf version. At nearly half the cost of a new book and approximately the same cost that a rented or used book, this option allows for complete portability. •By using a loose leaf version of the book, students only need to carry the portion of the book that's being covered in class with them. This loose leaf version addresses students' need for portability.Today's students are busy! The loose leaf version is light and easy to carry to class, to work, on the bus, or wherever else they plan to study and learn.•Students not only get a print version of the book, for the same price they also receive an integrated multimedia ebook that includes videos and links to other resources.•Students also receive, for the same price, an access code to Connect and LearnSmart, which provide a number of interactive multimedia tools that will help them learn.•And if that's not enough, Connect Core Concepts in Health is now seamlessly and deeply integrated with Blackboard and Blackboard related course management systems. Only one sign-on is needed, the grade book is integrated, and much much more.•Would you still like your students to have a bound book? You can find one within our CREATE system. While you're at it, we can pull out the chapters of the book you don't assign. This ensures students are purchasing only the content that is being assigned to them, making the book 100% relevant to your course, more affordable, and still lightweight and portable.

The Art of Public Speaking Review

The Art of Public Speaking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Students who use Lucas' book are presented not simply with an excellent text for preparation and delivery of speeches, but also with a website full of information, examples and tips. While this is intended for a classroom setting (the teacher's edition comes with a lot of supplements to help enhance the learning experience for the students), those who want to learn about the mechanics and processes of public speaking on their own would not be ill served by using this text.
There are some signature features that make this a very good text for students, both independent and classroom based. The internet connection is but one, not only the website associated with the book, but also tips on using the vast resources of the internet wisely and efficiently. There is a strong coverage of ethics, to help students avoid the problems of plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent), as well as how to listen properly (without attaching personal agenda or false meaning to interpretation). The book is very visually interesting, with colourful pages, pictures, charts, and examples of things that might be used to make speeches more interesting. The text is written with the student in mind - it is not a book by experts for experts, and thus keeps the language at a basic level without sacrificing clarity.
The book itself is organised into broad sections: Speaking and Listening; Getting Started; Organising and Outlining; Speech Presentation; and finally Varieties of Public Speaking. There are few things that inspire more fear in many people than the prospect of having to deliver a public speech - the first chapter deals with some of this anxiety issue, as well as helping the students to understand the role of the listener (a role that most of us assume far more often than we realise). The sections on Speech Preparation cover the range from selecting the idea, understanding the audience and doing research to organising the speech from beginning to end in a logical, meaningful, and interesting manner.
While the section on preparation might be consider by many to be the most important, the section on speech delivery is perhaps the most vital, for a good speech poorly delivered will likely not have much impact, whereas a poor speech delivered with great power can often have great influence. This section deals with issues of language, delivery, body language, personal presentation, as well as the use of visual aids (when they are and are not appropriate).
There are different types of speeches, and these are covered in the final section. Speeches can be used to inform (like lectures), to persuade (much of political speech is like this, as are sermons), or in special occasions such as introducing people, presenting awards, accepting honours, or speeches of commemoration and memorial. There is also a section on small-group speaking - most people don't attribute the idea of `giving a speech' to speaking in board rooms, committees, etc., but this requires a special kind of rhetorical skill.
Overall, this is an excellent text for coming to understand the art of public speaking from beginning to end.

The Ultimate French Review and Practice with CD-ROM (UItimate Review & Reference Series) Review

The Ultimate French Review and Practice with CD-ROM (UItimate Review and Reference Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have loved the French language since I studied it in college and have tried to practice it whenever possible, traveling, seeing French films, reading newspapers in French. I bought French language books for review but always felt I was at a standstill, never really improving. It wasn't until my daughter started studying French in high school and I was looking for books for her that I began to make progress. That was the day I found The Ultimate French Review and Practice in a bookstore.
The book explains all the grammar points of the language so clearly and concisely and the exercises use real situations and everyday, authentic language. The culture notes are fascinating and connected thematically to the exercises. The articles and ads from French language newspapers with their accompanying exercises have really helped me to read and understand. I have been so motivated and inspired by this book.
I couldn't imagine anything better until I was in a bookstore and voilà, there was The Ultimate French Review and Practice with a CD-ROM. Several weeks into my use of the interactive CD-ROM I'm so excited that I have to write in to let people know about it. I'm working my way through the hundreds of exercises that are all new and different from the exercises in the book. I can practice all the grammar points of French and the exercises are referenced to the chapters in the book so it's easy to check my answers and find explanations. The diagnostic and review tests are extremely helpful.
What I especially love about the CD-ROM are the Audio Modules which are great for improving your listening comprehension skills. They have dialogues or narrations spoken by native French speakers. If I don't know a word I can consult the Glossary or the pop-up definitions. I find it very helpful to repeat after the speaker the Ten Key Words and Expressions that precede the audio passages. The topics of the audio passages are very varied and there's a wealth of idiomatic vocabulary based on the topics. My daughter, who is now studying French in college, is dazzled by what I can say about shopping, choosing a career, traveling by plane, eating in a restaurant, even falling in and out of love. She says she hasn't learned nearly as much in her courses and plans to borrow my CD-ROM! Je crois que je vais avoir un succès fou (as one dialogue character says)!

Principles of Environmental Science Review

This textbook was a bit stuffy for me but it was still a good educational tool.
"Principles of Environmental Science" covers many environmental issues and problems that have been a part of the ES community for some time, as well as some issues that are newly developing. It takes a very global look at things and then brings it all together by helping the reader to truly understand the connection the reader has to this global environment.

Rather than the 25 to 30 chapters found in most environmental science textbooks, the authors have limited Principles of Environmental Science: Inquiry and Applications to 15 chapters--perfect for the one-semester, non-majors environmental science course. True to its title, the goal of this concise text is to provide an up-to-date, introductory view of essential themes in environmental science along with offering students numerous opportunities to practice scientific thinking and active learning.

Repaso: A Complete Review Workbook for Grammar, Communication, and Culture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared.

Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography Review

Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seizing the Light: A History of Photography. is a wonderfully broad, contemporary, eclectic and entertaining book. Robert Hirsch has produced the most useful, readable, and practical successor to Beaumont Newhall's classic, The History of Photography, first published in 1937. Seizing the Light is written in a friendly, accessible way -- dense with information, but more hip and lively than other offerings, especially those aimed at college students. Hirsch includes the "canon" of standard western photographic history (represented by Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, White, et. al.) first set forth by Newhall and other researchers, but updates the information with special emphasis on the last five decades of photographic practice, including digital imaging.
Many teachers and interested readers will greatly appreciate Hirsch's conscious effort throughout the book, to include numerous women and photographers from other cultures. (Chapter Two opens with an image of an American Indian, and includes a portrait of an African-American, affording students the realization that marginalized groups actually did appear as subjects before the camera in addition to working behind them.)
Students will also appreciate Hirsch's habit of opening new chapters with a description of cultural and political events occurring during the period under discussion: Chapter Twelve starts with a harrowing description of life for immigrants in New York City in the late Nineteenth Century during the time of Jacob Riis, and Chapter Seventeen has a helpful summary of the ending of the Vietnam War, connecting it smoothly to such diverse influences as Richard Nixon and the BeeGees! There are also wonderful endnotes following each chapter that are absolutely addictive, giving curious readers further information and surprising tidbits of information.
Hirsch's knowledge gained as a Director of CEPA Gallery in Buffalo (a contemporary non-profit Artist's space) provides him with exceptional insight into contemporary photography. This is especially evident in his last Chapter, Eighteen, "Thinking About Photography," which abounds with infrequently seen and challenging images by Arnulf Rainer, Nam June Paik, John Baldessari, Anselm Keifer, Gilbert and George, William Wegman and the Bechers. There is a clear and helpful section on Postmodernism, including the usual suspects: Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, and Victor Burgin. There are sections on "Gender Issues" with Judith Golden, as well as one on "Fabrications" with Sandy Skoglund, Olivia Parker, Joel Peter Witkin and others. "Altering Time and Space" includes David Hockney, the Starn Twins, and the delicious hand-colored work of Holly Roberts. Other sections include "Investigating the Body" (Andres Serrrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann) and "Multiculturalism" (Clarissa Sligh, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, and the Guerilla Girls). Hirsch closes this bulging chapter with a discussion of digital imaging, including images by Pedro Meyer, Nancy Burson and several rising young artists in new media. He concludes with an extensive bibliography of related books and resources, a helpful list of monographs by the major artists presented throughout the text, and a section on sources for artists' books.
Robert Hirsch has produced a most impressive and useful book that readers will find engaging and relevant. The currency and eclectic nature of Hirsch's thought is fascinating and his book serves as a much-needed supplement to existing texts in the history of photography.
(Submitted by Brian Taylor, Professor of Art and Design at San Jose State University, where he has taught the History of Photography for 25 years. Prior to that, he studied with Beaumont Newhall for three years during graduate school at the University of New Mexico.)

Case Files: Obstetrics & Gynecology Review

Case Files: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Echoing the sentiments of previous reviewers, this book basically has 30-40% of the Ob/Gyn shelf within its pages. A lot of my friends read the book as well and were similarly amazed at its mimcry. Some of the questions seem to directly stem from the 60 cases in this text. You're hurting yourself by NOT reading this. It provides a good foundation for the major scenarios you might encounter in Ob/Gyn. It's particularly effective because the Ob/Gyn shelf is really specialized to the field and doesn't have too many general medicine questions like other clerkship tests.
That said, it should be noted this is not a textbook. You won't really get the ins and outs of fetal monitoring, birth, etc. This book is best utilized about a week from the exam or very early with the intent of RETAINING the specific scenarios. A good book to read to fully flesh out the subject would be Blueprints in Ob/Gyn.
A quick, effective read that's the easiest way to bettering your shelf score. If you enjoy your off time in med school, this is a great way to cram.

This is a much better way to learn clinical information. I have not read a book like this before, and I certainly have enjoyed it." -–Eric Hossler, Medical Student, James H. Quillen College of Medicine"I LOVED this book!I would recommend this book to all third-year students… The book uses a clinical approach and does not lose sight of the pathophysiology behind the disease -- GREAT preparation for being on the wards! The subject matter is also deceptively detailed, with much more information than one normally finds in a text of case files. The reader can use this book as either a rigorous self-test or a read-through introduction to the subject.Once again - a GREAT text!" -–Elizabeth Johnston, Medical Student, Emory University

Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide (Exam PW0-050) Review

Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide (Exam PW0-050)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just passed the Wireless# test today with a really good score. Before taking the test, I read every page of this book. It also has very good questions (with answers explained) at the end of each chapter. If you have a desire to work in the wireless field, but have no real experience yet, the chapters on wireless security, installation, troubleshooting and optimization really give you a head start towards that experience!
Sure you can find a study guide that will just barely give you enough information to pass the test. If you would rather have more information behind the meat, this book is for you. Some of this material was new to me, so I wanted to really know the subjects before taking the test. Besides, this book is the official study guide for the Wireless# test by the CWNP program.
This book (and certification) really is a mile wide and a couple of inches deep. Great place to start in the wireless field. After that, you're really set to start with your CWNA study and test. Now you're getting into a subject that is only a half mile wide, and many more feet deep. CWSP is even smaller but much deeper.
Good luck and have fun!
