Report Writing for Business Review

Report Writing for Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book to use as a guide for students who needed help with industrial-setting report writing. It was a bit more than they needed or could digest at the time. It certainly is a college level text! Since I couldn't easily use it in the work setting I had in mind, I kept it for myself and am glad I did.
I particularly have found useful the chapters on the physical preparation of reports, since those are applicable to workbooks, and books and articles as well. The material on research--using email surveys for example--was very helpful and interesting.
This is not Report Writing For Dummies! It can be intimidating at first thumb-through. But it is a comprehensive look at an extremely wide variety of writing and presentation situations in business. It would be very helpful for almost any supervisor or manager, or for authors, trainers and teachers.

Communicating Effectively (The Briefcase Books) Review

Communicating Effectively (The Briefcase Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In a world that prides itself on "efficiency," Lani's personable, professional treatment of over-all communication is truly EFFECTIVE. My copy of this handy handbook is filled with different colored highlighting, scribbling in the margins, and dog ears. The format is delightful for one who reads many books; the style makes one feel as if the author, Lani Arredondo, is right beside you, encouraging, smiling, touching--always teaching more fine-tuned ways of communicating.
This easy-read is a priceless blend of head and heart, mindset and skills. The play on "p's" makes for easy Practice! The part our perceptions play in our interactions sets the stage. Perceptions, personality profiles and pausing were keys for me. Lani leads the reader by conversational tone to understand how differences can be pluses when managed with understanding and skill. We are reminded to pause when confronted with less than positive folks.
Another strong point in this age of speed is the crisp format and the relevant tips for being brief. And bold. Lani confronts in a warm style the general fear of facing issues--glossing over, backing down, etc. She gives workable ways to help individuals and teams talk through to real solutions. The lively lessons on giving instructions and feedback are helpful for those who hesitate or barge in inappropriately.
"Communicating Effectively" builds logically from laying a foundation of understanding to getting the courage to be real and right on! When every job ad calls for "excellent communication" and "getting along with people," this book should be next to everybody's laptop--and bedside. It's next to mine and I'm still highlighting!

Repaso: A Complete Review Workbook for Grammar, Communication, and Culture Review

Repaso: A Complete Review Workbook for Grammar, Communication, and Culture
Average Reviews:

Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared.

Business Communication: Building Critical Skills Review

Business Communication: Building Critical Skills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having taught business communications for years, I've been waiting for a textbook that effectively combines business theory with practical approaches for improving students' writing. Using an innovative modular approach, Locker & Kaczmarek's Business Communication-Building Critical Skills (BCS) succeeds in doing both.
What I like most about BCS the flexibility it affords. Its modular approach enabled me to design a curriculum that complemented my teaching style. For instance, each module contains a "Polishing your Prose" section-a series of exercises that review topics ranging from grammar to parallel structure. Throughout the semester, I've used these sections to help students improve their writing noticeably. Other texts tend to relegate discussions about grammar and the craft of writing to single chapter or a less-than-adequate appendix.
In addition to creating an innovative and flexible text, Locker and Kaczmarek have helped to simplify the instructor's job by providing a wealth of supplementary materials, including an online resource, PowerPoint presentations, transparency masters, a test bank, and a computerized gradebook.
Having already used Business Communication-Building Critical Skills, I cannot recommend the text enough. I expect to use it for many semesters to come. I would encourage you to purchase the book (Published by McGraw-Hill) and see for yourself.

The innovative module structure allows instructors to focus on specific skills and provides greater flexibility for short courses and different teaching approaches. While grounded in solid business communication fundamentals, this text takes a strong workplace activity orientation which helps students build the writing, speaking, and listening skills that are crucial for success in the 21st-century workplace.

Management: Leading and Collaborating in the Competitive World Review

Management: Leading and Collaborating in the Competitive World
Average Reviews:

This book is unique in its pedagogical approach. Other management textbooks are just characterized with sound theoretical depth and textual density. However, "Management: The New Competitive Landscape" is distinguished by the capability of its authors to seamlessly blend the theoretical concept with practical, real-life advice using an exceptionally engaging conversational style. Holding a bachelor's degree in business administration as well as an MBA in Management, I completed several management classes and researched advanced management literature in many books. However, I decided to purchase this introductory management reference due to its unprecedented pedagogical style. When I opened the book in the store, I felt like attending a live lecture from the authors directly capturing their knowledge and experiential advice. Thus I learned from this book big time especially from the on-the-job perspective.

Bateman and Snell's "Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World" is a text with a fully modernized functional approach. This text is maintaining the four traditional functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, while modernizing and re-visioning the concepts as delivering strategic value, building a dynamic organization, mobilizing people, and learning and changing. Bateman/Snell's results-oriented approach is a unique hallmark of this textbook. In this ever more competitive environment, there are five essential types of performance, on which the organization beats, equals, or loses to the competition which are cost, quality, speed, innovation and service. These five performance dimensions, when done well, deliver value to the customer and competitive advantage to you and your organization. Throughout the text Bateman & Snell remind students of these five dimensions and their impact on the 'bottom line' with marginal icons contributing to the leadership and collaboration theme, which is the key to successful management. People working with one another, rather than against, is essential to competitive advantage.

Ethics in Engineering Review

Ethics in Engineering
Average Reviews:

Most engineers consider themselves very ethical, and even make the effort to read the codes of ethics established for their profession. They would do themselves well to read this book. Every engineer will learn about deeper ethical issues, and some situations where they never realized an ethical issue even existed. From a model of how to deal with ethical dilemmas, ethical theories, public safety in design, the complicated faces of honesty, workplace ethics, and environmental ethics. The book reads slow in spots but the information is too important to be skipped or skimmed.

The Most Common Mistakes in English Usage (Schaum's Paperbacks) Review

The Most Common Mistakes in English Usage (Schaum's Paperbacks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned this book for about ten years and moved it with me whenever I get a new technical writing assignment. It has saved my writing hide with the subject matter experts numerous times! It shows the most common errors made in English usage in an easy-to-understand manner. I had trouble with misplaced modifiers and "like" as opposed to "such as" for years. This book helped me learn which way is correct usage!
I like the straighforward and often humorous style. I'd love to see future editions.

The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication: Manage Your Writing (McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Courses) Review

The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication: Manage Your Writing (McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Courses)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're reading this review, you probably already know that improving your writing could help your career and are motivated to do that, so this book could be very helpful.
Although this book is very readable (written in a casual, direct, and often humorous style), you wouldn't want to just read it, because it's designed to be used. The organization is great for actually applying what each chapter teaches: testing yourself on what you've learned and, most importantly, practicing new approaches to writing. If you're serious about becoming a better writer on-the-job, then this book can teach you how to do that.
You just need to be motivated enough to put in the 36 hours and really do what's required to learn on your own. This is a lot cheaper, more flexible, and possibly more effective way to learn than taking a class with a roomful of people and doing graded homework assignments that might not apply to your every day work.
The author has great examples and his "manage your writing today" sections are practical and creative and easy to apply. You just need to follow the instructions.

Leaders and the Leadership Process Review

Leaders and the Leadership Process
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the text that was used in my Master of Science - Organizational Leadership Introductory Course.
It is not easy reading, nor should it be for a course at a high academic level.
It in effect provides a very broad outline of the theory and supportive research of leadership in the past 70 - 80 years. Obviously, such an endeavor cannot be exhaustive. What is aimed at here, is an exposure to the foundations of Leadership Theory and how it breaks into the major camps of Leadership espoused by the majority camps in the field and in practice outside of academia.
First, the negative factors, and bear in mind the overall strong rating of the text and please note the strengths concluded with below.
1. The Book itself is composed of a brief introduction to the particular element of leadership theory followed by readings drawn from major journals to give some idea of the current state or the development of research and findings. In keeping with this format, the physical layout of the book is similar to what you would find in an academic journal using 8 1/2" by 11" paper. This is bound in a softcover binding. I found the dimensions of the book to be very frustrating in the constant referring back and forth from articles, journals etc. necessary when using the book as a reference for the academic papers involved. It seems to be that the binding should better, the size smaller and possibly even something in a hard-cover. Afterall, this is supposed to be a cornerstone in a students leadership library. I know that is a pipe-dream in this day of high cost academic books and cost-cutting measures, but it needs to be said. You'll need to work carefully to keep this tome from becoming dog-eared and available for reference moving forward.
2. This is a personal bias but bears stating. There are only 3 mentions in the entire book relevant to Servant-Leadership which is one of the more popular important theories to have arisen since its inception in 1977. It appears to have been summarily dismissed as an unteneble theory in view of the values of the servant-leader needing to be embraced by the stakeholders. That in and of itself is debatable. However, I embraced or not, there was obviously little reference to this major theory and that in my opinion speaks to bias on the editing of the book. Agree or not, to truly represent the field this needed more interacting with the tenets of the theory to truly be a representation of current leadership-theory.
Those 2 elements aside, this is what speaks in favor of the book.
1. The research in the supporting theories is very thorough and gives a good foundation for further work and understanding of work in this realm involving both Quantitative and Qualitative Research. If you're just looking for some popular discourse on leadership approach, you will be overwhelmed by this element. It is however, a text for use in Academic circles, so this is as it should be.
2. Good attention is paid to multi-cultural and cross-cultural issues in leadership that are increasingly relevent in the global economy and advent of the multi-national corporation.
3. The bibliographies of each chapter are more than sufficient to serve as a roadmap to the additional reading that can fill in the many gaps that necessarily exist.
Not for the faint-hearted or casual reader. Overall, an excellent resource that in my opinion could have been just a little better.

Listening is a good book, especially since there are so few out there on the subject. It is quite out-dated, and is hard to keep the information sorted in an outline form.
