Inside Reporting Review

Inside Reporting
Average Reviews:

Newspaper editors bemoan the unpreparedness of the entry-level reporters they hire right out of college. You need only look at the typical college journalism texts to see part of the problem. These ancient tomes read and look as if they were prepared a century ago - and many of them were.
This is not the case with Tim Harrower's "Inside Reporting: A practical guide to the craft of journalism." This amazing book is chock-full of everything that motivated me to become an ink-stained wretch 30 years ago. It's relevant, compelling and interesting in ways you'd never expect from a textbook.
Harrower has written the book not just on reporting, but on how to produce a college textbook on any subject -- with an editing style and design that is absolutely captivating.
This book will do for newspaper reporting what "All the President's Men" did for journalism a generation ago - encourage a whole new generation of young people to take up today's digital tools and get the story.

Harrower is an award-winning editor, designer and columnist who has previously taught at Portland State University and currently conducts journalism workshops. The second edition of Inside Reporting continues to emphasize the basics but also provides a wealth of information on online reporting and packaging stories in more visual, interactive ways. This is accomplished thru a diverse set of examples, and the unique, and most popular feature of the text, the "Manager as a Person" Chapter 2. This chapter discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems and this theme is carried thru the remaining chapters. Management Strategy: Achieving Sustained Competitive Advantage, 2e, by Alfred Marcus, is a brief, focused paperback text, allowing ample time for the instructor to incorporate other materials commonly used in this course, such as cases, readings, and/or simulations. The text focuses on how making winning moves depends on finding profitable patterns that repeatedly meet customer demands for solutions. Whereas many strategy books have lost sight of the purpose of strategy and fail to show how decisions actually affect business performance and, ultimately, outcomes, Management Strategy focuses on the types of analyses and strategic moves required, given the industry, environment, and a company's internal resources. In eight chapters, this textbook builds upon the analysis process and demonstrates how strategy impacts an organization's position in comparison to its competitors, both in terms of the cost and quality of its products and the scope of businesses in which it is involved (vertical and horizontal integration), as well as its global versus domestic reach. The outcomes that come from analyzing an organization also determine the extent to which the organization will strive to be an innovator as opposed to being a follower.

This book would be great to those marketing financial services. Example after example is spent determining how to market securities and finding out about how to find them. Unfortunately, if you are in any other line of business, there will be precious little for you to take away with this book. It was a waste of my money, but again, if you are selling financial products go for it.

Understanding Business Review

Understanding Business

As a college professor, it upsets me when book authors and publishers change editions so frequently. There is a new editon of this book coming out (perhaps it already has). C'mon-how much about basic business has since 2001? It seems a ploy to not only charge students more money (and disallow them to buy a used edition) and force professors to change the lesson plans for the course-based on changes in a couple of chapters.
The book, however, is well written and provides good examples and case studies.

Conflict Resolution Review

Conflict Resolution
Average Reviews:

I found this book to be of tremendous value. Conflict Resolution is an easy to read resource that is full of practical information that can be applied immediately on the job. It is not only a must-have for managers and supervisors, but also an essential resource for anyone who would like to have more effective relationships and live a conflict free life. Daniel Dana writes with a friendly and often humorus style and it is clear that he has a vast knowledge of this topic. He has a great ability to take a complex subject and make it simple and easy to use with specific "how-to" steps, and that really makes this book valuable to me. I have now successfully used the resolution approaches outlined in this book both in my profession as a consultant and trainer, and in a family conflict situation that was causing a lot of pain. Additionally, the ideas in this book have worked for me in both one-on-one conflicts and group conflicts. The bottom line - this works.

Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions) Review

Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book serves as a basic introduction to retail, though it often feels like "baby talk". It basically describes, without much analysis, the types of policies retailers adopt in several areas including merchandising, inventory management, ordering, HR, finance, store layout, etc. Good as a reference to what others are doing, but not at the cutting edge of retail.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions)

Known for its strategic look at retailing and current coverage, this new 6th edition continues to be organized around a model of strategic decision-making. One of the major advantages of the Levy/Weitz approach is the text's readability, organization, and its emphasis on how students can come to grips with real retailing issues and be able to solve problems. The text's logical organization around a decision-making process allows readers to learn about the process of strategic decisions first before moving on to decision implementation. The implementation decisions are broken down into merchandise management decisions and store management decisions, just as they would be in a real retailing setting. The text provides a balanced treatment of strategic, "how to," and conceptual material, in a highly readable and interesting format. The sixth edition continues its cutting edge coverage on the latest topics and developments in retailing including globalization, customer relationship management programs, multi-channel retailing, supply chain management, and the use of the Internet to improve operating efficiencies and customer service.Students indicate that this text is a "good read" because of the numerous examples of retailers, their practices, the interesting retail facts in the margins, and eye catching design and layout. Retailing is a high tech, global, growth industry that provides challenging and rewarding career opportunities for college graduates. This book and its corresponding tools and exercises were written to expose students to the excitement of retailing and prepare them for a career in retailing and related fields.

Japanese Step by Step : An Innovative Approach to Speaking and Reading Japanese Review

Japanese Step by Step : An Innovative Approach to Speaking and Reading Japanese
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Read this book first before wasting your money on other books. I just finished my first read through of this book. It was amazing. I learned more about how the Japanese language is structured in a few days than I have from other books in months.
Many students of Japanese just need basic information at the beginning in order to be productive in their studies.
Gene Nishi gets straight to the point, starting with the basic sentence structure, adding more information as the book progresses. And since everything complex is made up of simple things, you can start to see how a complicated Japanese sentence can be analyzed and understood. After reading through this book, I could get the "gist" of basic to intermediate Japanese sentences even though my vocabulary is yet not up to snuff. I could just tell that "someone gave something to someone else at such and such time", for example. While that may sound trivial, my abilities will only increase as I engage in Japanese conversation and read the Japanese papers, because the blanks will be filled in from the context, just like any other language acquisition process. The point is, I now know where the blanks are, thanks to this book!
Gene Nishi also does an excellent job of targeting this book to a particular audience: adult professionals who need to conversate with Japanese adult professionals(although this book would work for any student). Right now, I do not need to know all of the embellishments and ornaments in everyday Japanese language. I don't have the time. I just need to be able to have relatively educated conversations with a native speaker. This book has all of the tools to enable me to get the solid foundation needed to achieve that goal. He describes the different classes of adjectives, verbs and some of the more common particles(wa, ga, ni, de, no) in a clearer manner than anywhere else. Gene also said that learning the 1006 Kanji taught to Japanese grade schoolers would cover 90% of those used by newspapers. That was quite a relief! I had heard there were 20000 of them! If I learn 3 a day, I'm on my way. See how this book reduces some of the complications? Finally, Nishi's organization of this book makes a lot of sense. He starts from simple examples and works up to more complicated ones.
A few notes, while this book is an excellent start, once you finish it, to get the deepest understanding you will need to look at other books for the following reasons:
1. Understanding the Japanese language from a linguistic perspective. A few of Gene's descriptions do not match what I've learned elsewhere(for example, the Japanese characters or "Mora" are not divisible! You should not think of the particle "no" as a combination of the n sound and the o sound. To the Japanese, the particle "no" is one indivisible unit.)
2. Mastering the Kana
3. Learning Kanji
4. Understanding the tonal structure of spoken Japanese
5. Doing exercises! This is not an exercise oriented book. The books by Eleanor Jorden are the best in that area. I plan on going that route after mastering this book.

Incident Response and Computer Forensics, Second Edition Review

Incident Response and Computer Forensics, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I am a graduate of the flagship session of the System Administration, Networking, and Security institute's Forensics, Investigations, and Response Education (SANS FIRE) program. "Incident Response" (IR) should have been the textbook for that program. It is the most definitive work I've read on incident response and computer forensics. I highly recommend every security professional take advantage of this book.
IR starts with a revealing case study, and follows through with additional mini-studies and "eye witness reports" based on the authors' experiences. It provides plenty of clear diagrams and charts to reinforce key points, like the innovative "hard drive layers" outlined in chapter five. Most every mention of a command line program is followed by an example of that command in action, either via screenshot or text sample. These examples let readers try similar commands on their own workstations, reinforcing the authors' investigative directions.
Beyond the excellent presentation of technical material, IR frames its discussion of incident response and computer forensics in a practical investigative methodology. My SANS FIRE training repeatedly stressed the importance of documentation, policies, processes, and methodology when performing forensic work worthy of adversarial legal scrutiny. IR's attention to detail helps investigators collect evidence in a professional, repeatable, forensically sound manner.
Having appeared in court to defend their investigations, the authors share their knowledge and emphasize crucial steps to avoid forensic pitfalls. (An example is a DOS boot floppy's interaction with the DRVSPACE.BIN file. IR explains how to avoid this issue in detail.) Falling victim to these pitfalls could give a defense attorney an easy way to clear his client, or at least make certain evidence questionable in court.
The book is not perfect. Several typos indicated somewhat rushed publication, but did not detract from technical accuracy. I would have liked more material in chapter five on file systems; perhaps another appendix would be useful?
Many books and papers describe incident response procedures for UNIX, but few dare to discuss Windows. Given the predominance of compromised Windows hosts, this book thankfully addresses the Windows response task in a complete and clear manner. In many cases UNIX and Windows are compared side-by-side, and commands for one OS are explained using equivalents for the other OS.
IR provides a durable blend of practical investigative techniques and technical insights. I predict that investigators will cite the procedures in this book as examples of "best practices" when they defend their actions in court. I plan to build my company's incident response capability around IR's recommendations.
(Disclaimer: I received my review copy free from Foundstone.)

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach Review

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Early in this book the author tells us that business models are about making money. They are sometimes called business concepts or profit models. The author warns us to not confuse revenue models with business models. Revenue models are merely a part of a business model and describe how revenues are obtained, i.e., advertising, auction, markup, production, or subscription. On the other hand, business models are described by answering the following 5 questions:
1. What product are you going to make or what service are you going to provide? And how will you do it?
2. How will you generate revenues from what you make or provide? (revenue model) And how will you market what you have to offer?
3. What are your costs?
4. How will you price it?
5. Why will customers use you (or keep using you) rather than your competitors?
Business models are usually not all that hard to document. Take any store on the main street, in which you live and answer the above 5 questions about that company. Many of the answers can be found just by looking at the store while walking down the street. And some of the answers will require a little investigation or research. But the pieces of the puzzle will fit together not too long after the project was started. And what you will have is a diagram of an existing business at a specific point in time making a certain profit on a certain amount of gross sales.
Once armed with the documented business models for the competitors in the market you want to start your business, then you are in a position to create a business model for your new business so it will be able to compete with those competitors. And to actually transform your business model document into a real life business, then all you will need to do is write a 25-35 page sound business plan which you can then implement.
Now that I think I have adequately described what a business model is (and is not) I have to say that much of the book does not stick to talking about business models. The book has 13 chapters, and I did not find the following five chapters to be relevant to the subject at hand:
2. Customer value and relative positioning
7. Executing a business model
11. Financing and valuing a business model
12. Business model planning process
13. Corporate social responsibility and governance
They covered customer analysis, business plans, business plan topics, and business ethics. None of which are directly relevant in a discussion of business models. They don't relate to any of the five questions listed after the first paragraph above.
And I did not find ANY of the cases in Part II of the book to relate to the subject at hand: business models. The case studies simply described certain products or services offered by various companies. It never dissected the business models used in these cases.
I had hoped that the author in this book would have dissected the following generic business models in detail:
>>Retail businesses
>>Service oriented businesses (part service and part product)
>>Product oriented business (part product and part service)
>>Personal service business (all personal services)
>>Distribution companies
>>Internet companies
But this book did not do what I had hoped it would. And unfortunately for me I still haven't found a book that does. All in all, this book was a disappointment. 3 stars!

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approachby Allan Afuah represents a new kind of book. Business models are about making money and most firms are in business to make money (a profit). It is therefore no surprise that the phrase "business model" is increasingly finding its way into CEO speech after speech and in business school functional areas from accounting to finance to marketing to strategy. Because strategic management is inherently integrative in nature and increasingly more focused on firm performance, strategy textbooks have come closest to addressing the subject of business models, but only implicitly and partially so. Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach draws on the latest research in strategic management to explicitly and fully explore business models. It draws on the latest research on to explore which activities a firm performs, how it performs them, and when it performs them to make a profit. It offers an integrated framework for understanding the relationship between the set of activities that a firm chooses to perform, its revenue model, its cost structure, its resources and capabilities, the competitive forces in the firm's industry, and its ability to sustain a competitive advantage even in the face of change. It provides the link between resources, product-market positions and profits―how resources and product-market positions are translated into profits. (Existing strategy texts demonstrate correlation between resources or product-market positions and profits, not their translation into profits). Additionally, it explores the relationship between business models and corporate social responsibility as well as the international component to business models. It offers a definition of business models that is deeply rooted in the resource-based and product-market theories of strategy.

The book is well-organized and well-researched, with and exellent bibliography and index. Of probably the greatest interest to most readers is Part 1, consisting of separate paragraphs treating in depth the nature of negotiation, the strategy and tactics of distributive bargaining, the strategy and tactics of integrative bargaining and negotiation strategy and planning. By looking at distributive and integrative bargaining as separate processes with their own goals and preparations, the authors have given us a useful diagnostic tool in appraching a negotiation situation.
I also appreciated the excellent treatment given to negotiation subprocesses and contexts and insights into rezolving the inevitable differences that arise in a negotiation.
Even though it is only 526 pages, this is a negotiation tome. I have read the entire book and re-read many portions. There is so much interesting and useful information that unless the book is read deliberately and without undue delay it will be easy to forget most of what is covered. For a refresher, the reader should consider "Essentials of Negotiation" by the same authors.
