Java The Complete Reference, Seventh Edition (Osborne Complete Reference Series) Review

Java The Complete Reference, Seventh Edition (Osborne Complete Reference Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the text for a class I just finished. It's clearly written and does cover the new elements of the Java 6 platform. The author seems obsessed with AWT and applets in spite of neither having been used much this century. The book gives short shrift to swing. The book has nothing about java.sql and database connectivity. It touches briefly on servlets and ignores jsps.
If you're interested in an introduction to the nuts and bolts of the language the book is OK, if not inspired. Don't expect it to serve as a reference; it's short on detail. I would have liked to have seen a stronger emphasis on OO design. Most of the code examples are written in a procedural style that wouldn't have been out of place in 1985. A positive for the code examples is that every one I've tried compiles and seems to run properly.

Supervision: Concepts and Skill-Building Review

Supervision: Concepts and Skill-Building
Average Reviews:

This International Version is identical to the US Version. Compare them page by page and you will find no difference, except for the cover and the ISBN. You can save some money by buying this version instead of the US version. About the book: it is fairly concise, nicely organized, and very user-friendly. The information presented in every chapter is relevant and up to date. I was required to purchase this book to use in my Supervision class; however, I think that if I were to choose a textbook myself, this one would be at the top of the list.

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach Review

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Early in this book the author tells us that business models are about making money. They are sometimes called business concepts or profit models. The author warns us to not confuse revenue models with business models. Revenue models are merely a part of a business model and describe how revenues are obtained, i.e., advertising, auction, markup, production, or subscription. On the other hand, business models are described by answering the following 5 questions:
1. What product are you going to make or what service are you going to provide? And how will you do it?
2. How will you generate revenues from what you make or provide? (revenue model) And how will you market what you have to offer?
3. What are your costs?
4. How will you price it?
5. Why will customers use you (or keep using you) rather than your competitors?
Business models are usually not all that hard to document. Take any store on the main street, in which you live and answer the above 5 questions about that company. Many of the answers can be found just by looking at the store while walking down the street. And some of the answers will require a little investigation or research. But the pieces of the puzzle will fit together not too long after the project was started. And what you will have is a diagram of an existing business at a specific point in time making a certain profit on a certain amount of gross sales.
Once armed with the documented business models for the competitors in the market you want to start your business, then you are in a position to create a business model for your new business so it will be able to compete with those competitors. And to actually transform your business model document into a real life business, then all you will need to do is write a 25-35 page sound business plan which you can then implement.
Now that I think I have adequately described what a business model is (and is not) I have to say that much of the book does not stick to talking about business models. The book has 13 chapters, and I did not find the following five chapters to be relevant to the subject at hand:
2. Customer value and relative positioning
7. Executing a business model
11. Financing and valuing a business model
12. Business model planning process
13. Corporate social responsibility and governance
They covered customer analysis, business plans, business plan topics, and business ethics. None of which are directly relevant in a discussion of business models. They don't relate to any of the five questions listed after the first paragraph above.
And I did not find ANY of the cases in Part II of the book to relate to the subject at hand: business models. The case studies simply described certain products or services offered by various companies. It never dissected the business models used in these cases.
I had hoped that the author in this book would have dissected the following generic business models in detail:
>>Retail businesses
>>Service oriented businesses (part service and part product)
>>Product oriented business (part product and part service)
>>Personal service business (all personal services)
>>Distribution companies
>>Internet companies
But this book did not do what I had hoped it would. And unfortunately for me I still haven't found a book that does. All in all, this book was a disappointment. 3 stars!

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approachby Allan Afuah represents a new kind of book. Business models are about making money and most firms are in business to make money (a profit). It is therefore no surprise that the phrase "business model" is increasingly finding its way into CEO speech after speech and in business school functional areas from accounting to finance to marketing to strategy. Because strategic management is inherently integrative in nature and increasingly more focused on firm performance, strategy textbooks have come closest to addressing the subject of business models, but only implicitly and partially so. Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach draws on the latest research in strategic management to explicitly and fully explore business models. It draws on the latest research on to explore which activities a firm performs, how it performs them, and when it performs them to make a profit. It offers an integrated framework for understanding the relationship between the set of activities that a firm chooses to perform, its revenue model, its cost structure, its resources and capabilities, the competitive forces in the firm's industry, and its ability to sustain a competitive advantage even in the face of change. It provides the link between resources, product-market positions and profits―how resources and product-market positions are translated into profits. (Existing strategy texts demonstrate correlation between resources or product-market positions and profits, not their translation into profits). Additionally, it explores the relationship between business models and corporate social responsibility as well as the international component to business models. It offers a definition of business models that is deeply rooted in the resource-based and product-market theories of strategy.

While it doesnt cover the depths of human resource management theory, the book is rich with examples and engages students through application.
. .Fundamentals differs from the hardback textbook by the same author team. Instead of a higher level of theory thats geared towards the HRM majors, this book focuses on the uses of human resources for the general business manager.Issues such as strategy are reduced to give a greater focus on how human resources management is used in the everyday work environment. It provides students with the background necessary to manage human resources effectively and to be able to distinguish good from poor human resource management practices and how they impact business.

Human Biology Review

Human Biology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a biology book; not the current version, but I assume the human musculoskeletal system hasn't changed that much in the past two years. This version does not contain a set of case studies (trivial at best) but they are available online at the publisher's website.
If you are considering buying this version as a discount-alternative to the current [...]version, I would suggest it to be a good idea. The whole industry created around **NEW** versions of text books is a scam to take money from students. How can calculus change so much in two years that a new text is required? Short answer - it doesn't.
Buy a used book, and complain to your professors about the burden that costly, unnecessary, **NEW** versions cause to your ability to obtain a relevant education.

This market leading human biology text emphasizes the relationships of humans to other living things. Human Biology remains user friendly; relevancy and pedagogy are among its strengths. In this edition, as in previous editions, each chapter presents the topic clearly and distinctly so that students will feel capable of achieving an adult level of understanding. Detailed, high-level scientific data and terminology are not included because Dr. Mader believes that true knowledge consists of working concepts rather than technical facility.

This book is an easy read, slightly rough in the first few chapters but after that, its smooth. This edition is exactly the same as the US edition except for the cover. Just throw on a book sleeve and no one will know you bought the cheaper version. All of the chapters and pages are exactly the same.

This market-leading book introduces college students to the breadth and spatial insights of the field of geography. The authors' approach allows the major research traditions of geography to dictate the principal themes. Chapter 1 introduces students to the four organizing traditions that have emerged through the long history of geographical thought and writing: earth science, culture-environment, location, and area analysis. Each of the four parts of this book centers on one of these geographic perspectives.

Behavioral Medicine in Primary Care Review

Behavioral Medicine in Primary Care
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach med students and residents and find that this book is one of the best resources to describe the overlay between behavior and physiology. So many students say "well, that psychology stuff is just intuitive......I know what I'd feel" without recognizing that what they feel isn't the point - what their patients feel is! This book builds the necessary bridge between intuition and research.
My students express surprise that there IS a science behind behavior and there ARE ways to break bad news to patients and there IS a link between psychology and physiology (perhaps best illustrated by the great flow diagram on stress).
This book summarizes material well and uses good case examples. If I were going to write a book on behavioral science in medicine, this is the book I'd write.

Contemporary Labor Economics Review

Contemporary Labor Economics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this book for a Labor Economics class in college. While at first Labor Economics seemed kind of boring to me, after reading this text and taking the class, I became really excited about Labor Economics. Not only does the book present itself very well with depth to the concepts and graphs and data to help solidfy the points being made by the author, it is also written by David Macpherson. David Macpherson is a professor of economics at FSU and he heads the yearly debate between the Post Office and the unions. So, it comes to no suprise when the book gets into unions that it shines. I would highly recommend this textbook to anyone. After reading the first four or five chapters in this book, the reader can procede to any chapter that they want to, that is how well the book is laid out. Again, if you want a good labor economics book then this is it, you could purchase the 7th ed. but I think the data is just updated a bit. Save yourself about 60 bucks and get this edition instead.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Contemporary Labor Economics

"Contemporary Labor Economics, 7e" presents the "new" labor economics. In the past, study of labor was highly descriptive, emphasizing historical developments, facts, institutions, and legal considerations. Labor markets and unemployment was accorded some attention, but the analysis was typically minimal. This state of affairs has changed significantly in recent decades. Economists have achieved important breakthroughs in studying labor markets and problems. Labor economics is increasingly an applied field of micro and macro theory and has become a critical part of the core of analytical economics. As a result, the focus of the text is on the "new" labor economics. However, it also presents traditional topics such as: labor law, structure of unions, and collective bargaining, since these issues also play an important role in labor markets.

Great condition, pretty much brand new, the EXACT same as the regular fifth edition hard back but for less than half the price! If you need the Project Management: The managerial process book for a class or any other reason this is definitely the book to buy. I saved over $100 by buying this rather than the hard back version at my school book store, and I looked through the hard back and soft back international version with my teacher and they are both identical. This is the link to the more expensive hard back so you know which book I'm comparing this to: Project Management: The Managerial Process

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, Fourth Edition (Teach Yourself Electricity & Electronics) Review

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, Fourth Edition (Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just to make this clear, I'm writing this as somebody who does NOT have a degree in Electrical Engineering. I've been trying to get into electronics for years and have tried many different books.
I'll break this review into three sections as I think this book needs three different ratings.
1. 5 stars for teaching basic electronics theory and concepts. The majority of the theory is in the first two sections of the book. After wrestling with "The Art of Electronics" and the 1st edition of "Practical Electronics for Inventors" for years this was the book that finally made sense. The chapters are well paced and the tests are a good way to help think about what you've learned.
2. 3 stars for Section 3. This is an issue because section 3 is where the book starts with diodes, transistors, and electronics circuits. As far as helping us understand electronics, this section is not even near the level of the first two sections of the book. More importantly, the author does not adequately explain the circuits presented.
3. 1 or 2 stars for teaching "Practical" skills. After moving through almost 3 sections of this book, I understand a lot of theory but can't understand what is going in a basic circuit when I look at one. This book is completely lacking in the practical aspect. I assumed all this would be explained in the third section but it isn't.
I think this would be a great first book. You will, however, need other books to learn some practical skills, which is why you wanted to get into electronics in the first place.
