How to Solve Word Problems in Chemistry (How to Solve Word Problems (McGraw-Hill)) Review

How to Solve Word Problems in Chemistry (How to Solve Word Problems (McGraw-Hill))
Average Reviews:

For all those who thought they had substantial mathematical skills and overall capacity for learning chemistry (and realized they were sorely mistaken by the third lecture), THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I am a reasonably intelligent person and a really good student, but my ego shrank to infinitesmal proportions when I tried chem in preparation for medical training.
Goldberg's written word sounds like you're sitting in a lecture, only clearer. Don't give up, just get the right way to learn it. Goldberg's writing is a good start.

Schaum's Outline of Advanced Calculus, Second Edition Review

Schaum's Outline of Advanced Calculus, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After finishing the first 3 semesters of what is basically applied Calculus, majors in pure mathematics part company with their fellow students and move on to what is called "advanced calculus" or "functional analysis". This jump to the next level of mathematics, in which basically students have to be taught calculus all over again from a rigorous proof-based method, is a rude awakening to many. Most textbooks used in this situation, such as those by Rudin, assume that a talented and enthusiastic instructor will be acting as tour guide for the student, and will fill in the gaps. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This Schaum's outline works well for such a situation. It not only covers what you would expect to see in undergraduate analysis, it mixes proofs with solved numerical problems and applications so that the student does not get bogged down or bored as can be the case with many of the texts on the subject that have nothing but proofs as exercises. In that way, it is unconventional in its treatment of the subject. Also, it provides more explanation and tutorial than you will find in the average Schaum's outline, and is pretty good at illustrating the correct way to perform a proof. If you can afford it, an excellent companion text to this Schaum's outline is Abbott's "Understanding Analysis", which can be used for self teaching of analysis because it is so detailed and clear.

High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual Review

High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
... Randy Slone regurgitates no one; he states in his own words, clearly and in accessible language for the non-specialist, established principles of solid state amplifier design, and places these in the context of his suggested projects. One chapter is devoted to twelve "ready-to-construct" cookbook designs, and full-size PC board artwork for several of these are provided in an appendix. In short, if you want to build and/or design your own audio power amplifiers, this is an excellent resource.
Randy Slone begins with the basics of acoustics relating to audio power amplifiers and methodically walks the reader through a variety of designs, ranging from old to new, and simple to complex. As one would expect, much of this information is founded upon well established research. There is also a significant portion devoted to new techniques and principles of amplifier physics which help to de-mystify amplifier operation and provide pathways to improved performance. Unlike many similar textbooks that focus on only one topology or design philosophy, Randy Slone examines the broad range of amplifier configurations and power capabilities, including mirror-image input stages, fully-complementary VA stages, paralleled output stages, and lateral MOSFET designs.
Randy Slone may be somewhat opinionated, but his opinions appear to be logical reflections of measurable facts; and as any good scientist knows, that what cannot be measured does not exist for the world of science and engineering. He makes short shrift of tube cult; these are devices that produce measurable distortion and can never compete with the power capacity of modern solid state systems. The writing style and technical descriptions are easy to follow although a background in electronic fundamentals is helpful. No more than high school algebra is needed. Occasional humor increases the reading pleasure. Randy Slone has the somewhat eccentric habit of discussing current flow as if it traveled from negative to positive pole, while the convention is to describe it moving the other way. Once the reader becomes accustomed to this way of thinking - not too silly for electrons do indeed travel from negative to positive - it becomes easier to read. It is a complete resource for designing and constructing your own high-quality audio power amplifier systems.
I am currently building myself six of Randy Slone's OPTIMOS kits after reading the book. The fact that Randy Slone also sells the kits from his web site is a highly positive feature. Imagine trying to source all those components and make the PCBs yourself. Furthermore, Randy Slone is always available to help with specific questions and suggestion on a one to one basis. He really does answer his e-mail.
Highly recommended.

Finkelstein does an alright job with this book. It includes a lot of examples to base your paper off of. It shows you business letters, proposals, technical mechinism reports. tech process reports, technical diffinitions, progress reports, resume stuff, formal letters, memos, etc.
It was required for my technical communications class for engineers. It's definately something to keep on the shelf for reference.

Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra Review

Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an incredible value! It covers all major topics in the field of linear algebra, in fact, many more topics than some more expensive texts. This book has many theorems with proofs as well as example problems and applications. My only complaints about this book are that the coverage of theory is a bit terse, and the proofs to many of the theorems are found in the exercises section at the end of the chapter, rather than immediately after the theorem. The terseness means that, without prior exposure to linear algebra, it would be a bit difficult to teach yourself strictly from this book. But with a little bit of background, this book should be no trouble at all. A "real" textbook would get a lower rating for these types of complaints, but since this book costs less than $13, there is no reason not to get it.

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, Fourth Edition (Teach Yourself Electricity & Electronics) Review

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, Fourth Edition (Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just to make this clear, I'm writing this as somebody who does NOT have a degree in Electrical Engineering. I've been trying to get into electronics for years and have tried many different books.
I'll break this review into three sections as I think this book needs three different ratings.
1. 5 stars for teaching basic electronics theory and concepts. The majority of the theory is in the first two sections of the book. After wrestling with "The Art of Electronics" and the 1st edition of "Practical Electronics for Inventors" for years this was the book that finally made sense. The chapters are well paced and the tests are a good way to help think about what you've learned.
2. 3 stars for Section 3. This is an issue because section 3 is where the book starts with diodes, transistors, and electronics circuits. As far as helping us understand electronics, this section is not even near the level of the first two sections of the book. More importantly, the author does not adequately explain the circuits presented.
3. 1 or 2 stars for teaching "Practical" skills. After moving through almost 3 sections of this book, I understand a lot of theory but can't understand what is going in a basic circuit when I look at one. This book is completely lacking in the practical aspect. I assumed all this would be explained in the third section but it isn't.
I think this would be a great first book. You will, however, need other books to learn some practical skills, which is why you wanted to get into electronics in the first place.

Complete Digital Design: A Comprehensive Guide to Digital Electronics and Computer System Architecture Review

Complete Digital Design: A Comprehensive Guide to Digital Electronics and Computer System Architecture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ah, I wish I'd found this book two years ago. Back then, when I just started working as an EE, the benefit I could gain from the book would be huge. Today, knowing at least 90% of what is has to say, I'm still very much impressed.
Mark Balch takes a unifying approach I haven't seen in other books. Deciding to focus on the complete spectrum of digital/electronic design is a great decision, since most of the books out there either pay attention only to logic and assembly or only to leakage currents in diodes and bode plots of filters. Often, an EE has to work closely with both worlds, which is what the author of this book understood and filled 460 pages with valuable information.
On one hand this book teaches digital logic (with nice practical aspects, for example the 7400 family), computer architecture, memory, communications (with a great section explaining all the nuts-and-bolts of the omnipresent RS232/422/485 family of
standards), networking, state machines, FPGAs and CPLDs.
On the other hand, it doesn't neglect the low level stuff. A good overview of basic electronics is given, including information on diodes, transistors, op-amps and ADC/DACs. It doesn't stop there and discusses the practical aspects of design I haven't seen described in other (non-textbook) books - clock distribution, power regulation/distribution, signal integrity and various debugging techniques.
What I liked especially is that the author doesn't get into the topics too deep - there's textbooks and data-sheets for that. He gives theory when needed, focuses on the practicals and refers to other sources of information. In particular, the section that explains how to read data-sheets and what to pay attention to while reading is a gold-mine for young engineers.
I think this book can be very useful for fresh engineers - to get quickly informed of the wide spectrum of design practices or even for students of EE - to see the bigger picture. To seasoned professionals it won't provide much new knowledge.
