Let me be clear - the book is good, but not great. Most Schaum books are great. The book gives decent overview of international economics, but it could be more beefy.

Schaum's Outline of Elements of Statistics I: Descriptive Statistics and Probability Review

Schaum's Outline of Elements of Statistics I: Descriptive Statistics and Probability
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is well written with numerous examples of both statistics and probabiliy. Although the written material is straighforward, I personnally find it necessary to analyze the author's explanation to ascertain how the answer was derived.
I've been out of college for several years now and when attempting to assist and 8th grader with probability, I realized I needed a refresher course.
Keep in mind this is an outline and not an in-depth math book. The author has taken several steps to indentify what knowledge is necessary in order to follow the examples contained.
Considering the price and information contained, I would definitely state this was a bargain. On the other hand, if you don't understand addition and subtraction of fractions or finding the Least Common Denominator, perhaps a more general math book would be beneficial.

Schaum's Outline of Computer Architecture (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of Computer Architecture (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quite frankly, I was surprised at the usefulness of this Schaum's outline. I didn't think that the Schaum's outline format would work for a subject like computer architecture, but it does. All aspects of computer architecture are covered from computer arithmetic to processor design to memory systems to the advanced topic of multiprocessing. The format of the outline is a little different from the Schaum's usual formula. Each chapter consists of an "Objectives" section, followed by an introduction, followed by the various subsections of that chapter. There are examples and exercises on instruction set design, program design, block diagrams, and quite a few mathematical problems. This book is probably best suited to the advanced undergraduate or for self-study of the subject. If you are a graduate student that is using Hennessy's "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" the level of difficulty of the mathematical problems in that book is not matched by this one, and you should look for another source. Otherwise I recommend this guide for most students of computer architecture.

Schaum's Outline of Mechanical Vibrations Review

Schaum's Outline of Mechanical Vibrations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Schaum's outline is a better reference and source of examples and problems than it is a stand-alone tutorial. It does a pretty good job of outlining the material and kinds of problems you need to solve in a course on mechanical vibrations, but the explanations fall somewhat short. Also, remember that to understand this material you should already be familiar with matrix algebra, calculus, and both partial and differential equations, as well as your engineering mechanics. The wave equation and even Lagrangian dynamics are mentioned, and you are going to need to already understand those subjects if the problems in this book are going to make any sense. If you want a good cheap textbook on the subject that does a great job of explaining everything, I recommend "Mechanical Vibrations", by Hartog and published by Dover. That book was written many years ago, but it is still better than the expensive newer texts on the subject. In summary, buy Hartog for the explanation, buy this Schaum's outline for practice problems and a quick reference. You'll wind up with two books that comprise a self-contained course on mechanical vibrations for a total cost of less than thirty dollars.

Schaum's Outline of Introduction to Digital Systems Review

Schaum's Outline of Introduction to Digital Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't waste your money on this book. The primary problem being that the authors have gone completely "over the top" in their efforts to introduce logic representations employing what they refer to as "the mixed-logic convention". This has resulted in a key chapter (4) on the design and implementation of combinational logic being completely incomprehensible. And unfortunately much of this confusion is carried throughout the remainder of this book.
In fairness, I will point out that I'm somewhat biased. Being from an older school of though where we were taught binary arithmetic, Boolean algebra, Karnaugh mapping, digital IC hardware types, combinational and synchronous circuit design/analysis and how to establish and maintain a logic/voltage convention in our circuits. We were also taught how to take the family of logic that the boss gave us(usually the NAND gate, NOT inverter and J-K F/F) and design, test and draw a schematic for a circuit. We saw no need to have two or three different drawings for the NAND gate; somehow we just seemed to know how to interrupt the NAND function and no one seemed to agonize over what if the signal is "active high", "active low", "asserted", "unasserted" and etc. We also knew what the schematic meant without any "half arrows", "back slashes" or active high/low indicators other than the bar. God did we have it nice.
I fully understand that an instructor in this field today must incorporate some aspects of this mixed logic convention into their presentations. Many circuit designers have been taught this, to some degree or other, for several years and new students are sure to see different gate representations with different logic conventions being used in the same schematics; however this book is going to do nothing but be confussing in this area. When presenting the simple NAND gate implemented latch circuit (basic F/F), you see a drawing with two gates, eight half arrows, two back slashes and active logic livel indicators on all four I/O's, you have got to know something is seriously wrong. Do not read this book until you have your degree and then only for a laugh. For a Schaum's Outline, check out DIGITAL PRINCIPLES by Tokheim. If you can afford a good hardback reference, chech out DIGITAL SYSTEMS, PRINCIPLES & APPLICATIONS by Tocci & Widmer.

This invaluable book teaches readers a unified design methodology. After providing some introductory material, it guides students through MSI and LSI combinatorial loci elements, emphasizing devices that can be programmed for specific applications. The rest of the book deals mainly with synchronous sequential logic. Throughout, problems with step-by-step solutions and delayed answers help readers guage their progress, deepen their comprehension, and sharpen their analytical skills.

Schaum's Outline of PreCalculus, 2nd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of PreCalculus, 2nd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

I bought this book in order to learn precalculus because we skipped most of it in my class in order to goto Calculus. Initially the book started out slow because it talked about basic algebraic principles and such, but it got better. This book, I would say, is more for math-oriented students. I myself am not great in math, but spending time with the problems in this book is well worth it. I spent 27 minutes on one problem, and I understood it afterwards, and the satisfaction is great! But yes, this book has very good explanations and almost always never leaves anything out. The only thing I did not like about this book is it skipped some steps which made me take more time with a given problem.

Schaum's Outline of Mathematical Methods for Business and Economics (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of Mathematical Methods for Business and Economics (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very accessible and informative book. I had a couple of courses in calculus back in the early '60's, but I remembered next to nothing. Furthermore, I had absolutely no recollection of partial derivatives or total differentials. For all I know, we never covered them.
Nevertheless, with the help of Dowling's text, a colleague and I were able to use partial derivatives with a large data set to demonstrate that school size and the measured achievement of schools with largely low-income students are inversely related. Furthermore, using total differentials we were able to demonstrate that the measured achievement costs of increasing school size are diminished as districts get smaller, and that the benefits of small schools for less-advantaged students are diminished as districts get larger.
This is the one time in my life that I was able simply "follow the math" to a new and interesting finding, the one that followed from the total differential. Without a text as accessible, usefully organized, and broadly informative as Dowling's, I never would have been able to pull it off. A small achievement, perhaps, but very satisfying.

Schaum's Outline of Financial Management Review

Schaum's Outline of Financial Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an ordinary salery man and now preparing the CMA. Financial Statements are complex and not-easily-understandable ones, but should-be-understood ones for business people or to-be business people(students). This Schaum's series is a good practice book to understand the business language(Financial Statements). Schaum's series are very popular for their problem-driven method in understanding theory. The basic rule is "Good understanding means good applicable ability to our real world". Sometimes students forget this basic rule. I couldn't understand why in my school days I could't practice enough with problems like in the Schaum's. So I chose this book to prepare my CMA exam. It is a perfect practice book for your exam in Financial study and also very fast way to get a picture of the Financial statements. If you are a second tongue in English, this book is the very fast way to understand the English Financial Statements. If you are a native, you are a lucky man because you can get to the top two times faster than a foreigner by this book. Don't give up and good luck!

Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra Review

Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an incredible value! It covers all major topics in the field of linear algebra, in fact, many more topics than some more expensive texts. This book has many theorems with proofs as well as example problems and applications. My only complaints about this book are that the coverage of theory is a bit terse, and the proofs to many of the theorems are found in the exercises section at the end of the chapter, rather than immediately after the theorem. The terseness means that, without prior exposure to linear algebra, it would be a bit difficult to teach yourself strictly from this book. But with a little bit of background, this book should be no trouble at all. A "real" textbook would get a lower rating for these types of complaints, but since this book costs less than $13, there is no reason not to get it.

Contrary to the other reviewers claim, this book does teach you the basics of analog and digital communications. Hwei P. Hsu explains the basic fundamental principles better than any text written. I believe strongly that if a person studies from this book, they will have a strong foundation of the subject matter. Also they will see the big picture as oppose to getting lost in details. If one learns the main principles and concepts, and study the worked out examples, they will be able to solve the problems in most texts. Hwei P. Hsu has three excellent books, Signals and Systems, Probabilty and Random Processes, and Analog and Digital Communications.

Schaum's Outline of Basic Mathematics with Applications to Science and Technology (Schaum's) Review

Schaum's Outline of Basic Mathematics with Applications to Science and Technology (Schaum's)
Average Reviews:

This book from Schaum's is an all-in-one review/tutorial book for anyone who wants to brush up his math and is especially useful for those who want to apply math knowledge to areas such as astronomy, business, and electronics. First of all - what this book is NOT: This book isn't all a review of basic elementary arithmetic concepts like addition, multiplication, proportions, and decimals. In fact, it actually covers this stuff really briefly in the first chapter. It really covers high school mathematic subjects such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and statistics. Maybe "Outline of High School Mathematics" would be a more accurate title.
This outline goes through math subjects too quickly to be considered an effective tutorial. For example, geometry essentials are covered in only one chapter. Its actual contents - Over half of this book is on intermediate algebra topics, followed by trigonometry.
This was really a great all-in-one math manual for me. Great buy!

Schaum's Outline Introduction to Mathematical Economics Review

Schaum's Outline Introduction to Mathematical Economics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent book for non-quant jockeys who want to brush up on their mathematical skills for upper-level or graduate-level econ courses. The best strength of the book is its organization. After a chapter on introduction and discussion of a mathematical technique or theory, a chapter on the technique's application is presented. This is an excellent way to not only reinforce the material but demonstrate its applications and relavence to economics.
However, several caveats should be noted:
First, I believe that the ideal reader should already have some exposure to calculus. For instance, Dowling discusses the fundamentals of differentiation in about 26 pages, which is far too little if one is learning calculus from scratch. If the reader already has some exposure to calculus (as I did), then Dowling's chapters on differentiation and integration could be used as review.
Second, the learning curve really steepens in the latter chapters when Dowling discusses differential equations as he appears to sacrifice detailed explanations for brevity.
Lastly, I think the reader would be best served to use this book as a resource and not just as the main text. Mathematical Economics is a very broad and challenging subject, and as good as this book is, it only scratches the surface of a complex topic. I would also recommend "Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics" by Alpha Chiang.
Highly recommended.
