It makes application of statistics concepts to real world problems easy because it contains many good example problems that are solved for the reader. One statistics teacher complemented me on my use of the book because it is very difficult to use the information in other textbooks on problems because they contain very few solved examples. I own a few other statistics books but this one is always the most useful.

(More customer reviews)This is a completely outstanding work by an outstanding author. I have used this book for years, and again and again find myself turning to it for essential summaries and derivations of key results. Evidently some reviewers have not even caught on to the fact that the proofs of all the theorems are in the solved problems! (This is my first Amazon review, but I cannot allow the injustice perpetrated by some other reviewers to stand.)
All of the (few) typos of concern to some reviewers are in the "supplementary problems", and by the time you've got there you'll have no little confidence in your own answers and in your own ability. This is *the* probability and statistics book for me because the proofs are presented with minimum formality in order to maximize understanding of the main ideas. Want to know how to *derive* the chi-square distribution or how to add or multiply random variables? You'll find no clearer or more succinct presentation anywhere.
The first two chapters are also suitable for beginners. Copious examples (as thoughout) attend the presentations of (elementary) set theory, probability axioms, and combinatorics. The supplementary problems, always optional, however, do contain intermediate level challenges.
The book is entirely self-contained, and though it is of course true that extra books always help, it's the best single-source. It's ideal for self-study, as are all of Murray Spiegel's Schaum Outlines.

(More customer reviews)This book is well written with numerous examples of both statistics and probabiliy. Although the written material is straighforward, I personnally find it necessary to analyze the author's explanation to ascertain how the answer was derived.
I've been out of college for several years now and when attempting to assist and 8th grader with probability, I realized I needed a refresher course.
Keep in mind this is an outline and not an in-depth math book. The author has taken several steps to indentify what knowledge is necessary in order to follow the examples contained.
Considering the price and information contained, I would definitely state this was a bargain. On the other hand, if you don't understand addition and subtraction of fractions or finding the Least Common Denominator, perhaps a more general math book would be beneficial.

Primer of Biostatistics: Sixth Edition (Primer of Biostatistics (Glantz)(Paperback)) Review

(More customer reviews)I adopted this book last year for my first year grad level course in biostatistics (for MS Biology students) and my students and I were very unhappy with it. It presents ANOVA in a very unusual (and confusing) way, and it's not easy to find the needed formulas buried in the text. The authors present some tests well (ex. Tukey) and make a very good point about the misuse of the standard error of the mean. The examples and end of the chapter problems are very good for medical applications; however, several of the problems refer to non-existent tables or problems (or ones that are numbered differently) and several provide answers that are just plain wrong! We compiled a list of errors we found and emailed both the first author and the publisher and never received a reply. It was definitely not worth the aggravation! This year we are using Biostatistics: The Bare Essentials. It, too, is flawed, but the students report that finding the appropriate formulas and examples is relatively easy. It doesn't provide enough problems for each chapter to test you knowledge, and the humor is a bit bizarre, but it is a better teaching text.

Reading Between the Numbers: Statistical Thinking in Everyday Life Review

(More customer reviews)As a professional chemist, I do not look back on the statistics courses I took with particular fondness. While I didn't find them very difficult, neither did I feel that provided me with any deep insights. It was with this, lukewarm attitude that I first picked up Reading Between the Numbers. And then I noticed Chandler's quotation in one of its early chapters. Statistics and Chandler?! This must be interesting. I purchased the book and wasn't disappointed. I found the statistical concepts explained in a way that is both simple and insightful. And the book reminded me that I should have reviewed the topic, which is so important for my work, long ago. But I found the book unique in other ways as well. First, the book is relevant - there is not one concept in it that is not in some way connected to the real world. The author takes special care to show how and why statistics is important in both our professional and everyday lives. The concepts in Reading Between the Numbers are related to applications and vice versa, so that I can now see both sides in a new and more interesting light. Above all, I now feel that the ideas underlying statistics are more accessible to me than before. Second, as in many fields, the more advanced topics are based on earlier ones. And throughout, that author provides reminders of the basics so that I didn't find myself having to return to earlier chapters in order to understand later ones. It seems to me that author was simply sensitive to the needs of nonprofessional readers, which is a rarity in professional books. Finally, Reading Between the Numbers a joy to read. It is written as fiction rather than science and is often very funny. That the author has a rather quirky sense of humor is clear. That he has succeeded in combining it with statistics seems to me no small achievement.

(More customer reviews)This is a very accessible and informative book. I had a couple of courses in calculus back in the early '60's, but I remembered next to nothing. Furthermore, I had absolutely no recollection of partial derivatives or total differentials. For all I know, we never covered them.
Nevertheless, with the help of Dowling's text, a colleague and I were able to use partial derivatives with a large data set to demonstrate that school size and the measured achievement of schools with largely low-income students are inversely related. Furthermore, using total differentials we were able to demonstrate that the measured achievement costs of increasing school size are diminished as districts get smaller, and that the benefits of small schools for less-advantaged students are diminished as districts get larger.
This is the one time in my life that I was able simply "follow the math" to a new and interesting finding, the one that followed from the total differential. Without a text as accessible, usefully organized, and broadly informative as Dowling's, I never would have been able to pull it off. A small achievement, perhaps, but very satisfying.

Algebra for the Utterly Confused (Utterly Confused Series) Review

(More customer reviews).... and I have little to compare this book to. Relatively good, tho not perfect. On page 147, they show how to derive the lowest common denominator, go thru the steps, but appear to skip one detail-which isnt at all obvious.
I was able to consult a library book I had & get a decent explanation. Yes, this text had the correct answer, but didnt show u one of the steps.
Then they go on to show how to do the same lowest common denominator for adding a bunch of equations. At the end, they say u cant use certain values, but the finished equation gives u no hint as to why not.
This book often refers to "MAPLE", a software program that rearranges equations for u. Its ok if u dont have the software, the learning duznt hinge on it. And its nice to know that there is such software.
Overall, being very nearly done w/ the book, I think its pretty good. I took 10 math books out of the library. Why? Trying to learn game programming, and I knew my math was weak. Wasnt sure what the difference between algebra & geometry was any more, they were a hopeless mix of memories in my mind. Eventually, I'll need to break down & buy something, for now, I'm deciding based on study of free library books.
I think u'd be Ok w/ this book. I only wrote a review cuz no one else has written anything. I say, got to the library & then later, decide which book to buy for yer own.

(More customer reviews)This book is GREAT! I've been teaching statistics to students who have little interest in statistics. In fact, most of them are math phobic. Students who use STATISTICS FOR THE UTTERLY CONFUSED to supplement their learning just love it. Jaisingh has a wonderfully creative mind. He reduces complex concepts to the most fundamental meaning. From that point, phobic students begin to understand the applications of statistics to their profession. Most importantly, they experience success and become less math phobic.
One particularly section of his book stands out -- z-score transformation. Understanding z-score transformation is a problem for many of my students. After class lectures and reading Jaisingh's elaboration of these concepts, students gain insight. Mose importantly than z-score transformation, students advance their knowledge regarding the relevance of normal distributions.
This is a worthy book for any math phobic student who is enrolled in a statistics course.

(More customer reviews)The stats book provided by my school was hard to understand and used esoteric vocaulary that isn't necessary for the course so I immediately sought a review book. At first, I bought the Princeton Review, but soon realized that it wasn't satisfactory--it glossed over fundamental topics and didn't have good examples that replicated questions from the exam. I bought this book hoping that it would actually help, and it did. The examples/questions were exactly what they looked like on the exam and the questions had thorough explanations. It has rapid review sections, in case if you don't have time to read the entire section (although the sections aren't long).
In the end, I got a 5 on the exam, and it's all thanks to 5 steps to a 5.

Statistical Treatment of Experimental Data Review

(More customer reviews)Recently I took a short course that included an introduction to statistics. The instructor glossed over much of that topic, saying it was too hard for our level and to let someone the next higher level up do the math. The next day I brought in this book, and told him that it was the book everyone in my (non-math) major at college learned statistics from. After we all learned statistics from this book, I never heard any of them complain that they didn't know or understand how to apply statistics.
This book is not full of the theory of statistics. It tells the reader how to apply statistics, and gives easy to understand examples when introducing new ideas. The book covers probability, permutations, combinations, and the usual distributions (binomial, Poisson, Gaussian). A few concepts on goodness of fit and when to reject data are included, in addition to the propagation of errors, correlations, and least squares fitting. There is only a touch of differential equations in the book, being used to illustrate the origin of equations; otherwise the book is algebra-based.
Problems are included at the end of the chapters, with answers listed in the back. The target audience for the book was originally undergraduate science and engineering majors. However, with the exception of a few of the homework problems, and the occasional example in the chapters, the book should be easily understood by anyone with a decent grasp of algebra. Nineteen years after buying it, I still use and learn from the book--not something I can say about many of the other textbooks I had to buy over the years.

(More customer reviews)There are many questions of beginning statistics which this book either has very skimpy and unsatisfactory answers or has no answers at all. For example, the book goes directly from explaining normal distribution to binomial distribution except that it never quite explains binomial distribution except from graphs. Granted, statistics concepts are very hard to explain in words. But the book seems to breeze through many important concepts with one sentence or two.
The book covers the following:

4)Continuous Random Variables
5)Sampling Distributions
6)Estimation and Sample Size Determination
7)Tests of Hypothesis (one and two populations)
