Katzung & Trevor's Pharmacology Examination and Board Review: Eighth Edition (LANGE Basic Science) Review

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology Examination and Board Review: Eighth Edition (LANGE Basic Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, 4th Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series) for my entire second year of medical school. I recently purchased this book, and although I can't give a thorough post-Step 1 review yet, I do prefer studying (for exams and Step 1) from this book rather than Lippincott's.
The chapters are more lined up with the way my pharmacology class is set up, and it (briefly) includes lower-yield topics covered on my exams but not heavily emphasized on the Step 1. These topics are readily identifiable, however. The book itself includes an alphabetical listing of the 200 or so most tested drugs on Step 1, along with a brief description of the mechanism of action, toxicity, and the corresponding chapter or chapters that discuss this drug. Within each chapter, key drugs are listed in table format. Lippincott's seems less organized, and each chapter is organized differently than the next, making it more difficult to orient yourself when moving on to subsequent chapters.
This book does a better job integrating other relevant subjects into the chapter. For example, there is a decent immunology review in the chapter that discusses immune modifying drugs. Also, in every chapter you will find "Skill-Keeper" questions that test your comprehension of previous chapters. Very helpful, and lacking in Lippincott's
Katzung also has 10-15 (roughly) end-of-chapter review questions, along with two 120 question comprehensive exams, for a total of nearly 3 times as many questions as in Lippicott's. Some people may not need questions, but I do. They show me what I do know and create the desire to learn (and remember) what I don't. These questions are difficult and useful as a study aid even after you have used them to quiz yourself.
Katzung also has helpful figures and tables on nearly every page to satisfy visual learners like myself. While they are not as good as Lippincott's (which is in full color, unlike the black and blue format of Katzung), they are helpful.
All in all, you can't go wrong with either one. Both are A- in First Aid. I simply prefer Katzung because of the list of 200 most commonly tested drugs and the numerous questions and 2 comprehensive exams at the end. Lippincott's 4th edition was published more recently, though, and I have noticed that it includes some newer drugs that aren't in this book. I've been told new drugs are fair game, so that is something to keep in mind.

Appleton & Lange Review of Pharmacy Review

Appleton and Lange Review of Pharmacy

This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead.

Emergency Medicine: Just the Facts, Second Edition Review

Emergency Medicine: Just the Facts, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to post a preliminary review - not because I don't have opinions about this book, but because I don't have the time to write an in depth one. I think it is great that this book exists as a means to prepare for EM exams. But it suffers GREATLY from a lack of editing and coherent organization. There are many, many, many errors (using Tintanelli #6 as reference). For example:
"Patients older than 40 years are unlikely to have rotator cuff tears."
I am not so sure about this, it doesn't make sense really.
Searching in the big T book, I find "Patients with rotator cuff tears are almost always older than 40 years of age: rotator cuff tears in the young are rare." !!!!!!
This can get very time consuming and confusing. Some chapters are written and organized quite well, others are nothing but a mess, with very poor organization - going back and forth arbitrarily between disease entities, adding something about the pregnant patient, back to the first disease, then to the second one, etc. etc. One example (not the worst) is the way HUS and HSP are presented. The chapter on stroke is organized very poorly, without a clear hierarchical (anatomic?) structure. I just don't find this a good way to put the picture together in my mind of a particular disease, gathering the relevant data and moving on. Also many diseases are spread throughout the book, piecemeal, with sometimes conflicting information. I think it would be much, much better to write conclusively about a disease entity in one place and one place only. I don't find it so helpful to have bits of Lyme disease spread around in infectious disease, neurology and non-traumatic musculoskeletal disorder chapters! Maybe that is just me. There are many, many simple mistakes ("peroneal" nerve, not "perineal") that make it seem like this book simply was not edited by someone who understood the material. Some of the chapters are excellent, as I mentioned, but many are very poorly organized with lots of filler, not particularly helpful or clear explanations and a lot left out. The two column, bulleted design, does not always work well, or, more often, is used poorly. There are other books that fill this niche - I would recommend looking at them before settling on this book simply because it has the standard color scheme on its cover. ;)

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology (Katzung & Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination & Board Review) Review

Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology (Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who, like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.

Deja Review Pharmacology Review

Deja Review Pharmacology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you look at any subject area in medical school you will notice that there are some classic examples of things that come up over and over again. You see some topics on regular, class exams, SHELF exams, and the USMLE steps. The DejaReview series reinforces these important topics by a simple question/answer method so you can identify facts that you may not have thought about before. It is particularly useful in courses that require a lot of memorization such as Micro/Pharm/Anatomy/etc. The material in this book will help you pass your class exams (not honor them, just pass with an average score). It will also help you score higher on your standardized exams since those focus on the high yield, classic examples.

Deja Review Physiology Review

Deja Review Physiology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I had the money to burn. It is so similar to BRS Physiology that I'm surprised that Linda Costanzo wasn't given any credit to its making. Open both books up and you'll see that the table of contents are identical, from the name to the number of each chapter. Even the order that material is presented within each chapter is identical. Although it lacks the depth of BRS and is chalk full of errata, I like the way the material is presented. The question and answer format helps when trying to memorize important details and is much more easy to read than BRS. I would still go with BRS over this book (more detail with less errata), but buy this book if you have some cash to burn and want something to help you memorize the material in BRS better. (3.5/5)

First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 2 CK, Second Edition (First Aid USMLE) Review

First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 2 CK, Second Edition (First Aid USMLE)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am really surprised that out of the various USMLE books reviewed here on Amazon, this one has been grossly ignored. This book is really thorough in its review. The second edition features 344 topics covered in a clinical vignette format (prototypical cases similar to the ones encountered on the Step 2 CK exam) and each case is followed by questions that revolve around the core question stems that are tested on this exam, such as:
- What is the most likely diagnosis?
- What is the next step in management?
- What is the next diagnostic test?
- What is the treatment?
And there are other questions as well which deal with differentials, risk factors, epidemiology, pathophysiology, etc depending on the respective case/topic being discussed. Most topics are covered in a page or two.
A really cool feature of the book is its two-column format which is excellent for self-quizzing and interactive learning. Excellent review source!

Practice Makes Perfect: English Grammar for ESL Learners (Practice Makes Perfect Series) Review

Practice Makes Perfect: English Grammar for ESL Learners (Practice Makes Perfect Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have/are a student who needs focused practice with the basics of English grammar, this book is a good choice. It doesn't really focus on usage, context, etc. That's fine, though--its purpose is practice and review. It's particularly useful for beginner/false beginner students who never learned or have forgotten basic grammar terms (transitive verb, etc.). Of course, these terms and rules should NOT be the focus of any modern ESL/EFL course. (Why? Because that's not how people actually learn to use language.) Nonetheless, the rules and terms are useful for discussing grammar problems, explaining the differences between a student's home languages and English, etc. Get this book as a supplement for a comprehensive, communicative textbook such as _Interchange_ or _Out and About_.
In terms of design and planning, it has lots of white space and a good balance of questions and explanations. Most other grammar-focused books use explanations that are too wordy and hard to understand, and present text-filled pages that are overwhelming to beginners.
As an example, I have a client who is an adult from Japan. He studied English for a year or two in junior high and at a conversation school. Because he had a fair amount of vocabulary and could handle basic conversations ("How are you?" etc.), we started off using an Interchange book. However, I eventually realized that he didn't know terms such as "adjective," which sometimes made it hard for me to explain why a sentence he had written needed to be changed. I picked up this book, and he's really appreciated adding some focused grammar work to our otherwise functional/conversational sessions. We've been following up the grammar work with Mad Libs so that things don't get too boring. He loves the book and uses its nice amount of questions in each section as self-guided homework.
As a bonus, this book is quite inexpensive and thus good for private teaching situations or for self-study.

Great review of basic surgical procedures, indications, complications, etc. Unfortunately the surgery clerkship shelf by NBME covers more medical management of surgical patients, so this book has one chapter that is useful for that. But if you are looking to be an all-star in the OR, read this book before your procedures and you'll know more than most other students. McGraw-Hill's Nursing School Entrance Exams Review

McGraw-Hill's Nursing School Entrance Exams
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
***3 star-rating refers to suitability of this book for the TEAS examination only. Otherwise, the quality of this book is quite adequate.
It seems that there is no one book that sufficiently prepares you for this test. This was one of three manuals I used for the TEAS exam, and probably the one I liked the most. I found it less detailed than the Kaplan's book-GOOD THING. I'd especially recommend it over the Kaplan if you are short on time. It is well-written, easy, and fits the TEAS better. However, it only prepared me sufficiently for the Math and English sections. Sadly, about 60% of its Science section I found useless for this test (applies to all books I'VE tried). And the most upsetting, about 6 topics necessary to pass the exam were missing in all books. You can't screw up more than 5 questions out of 40 per section. Someone told me that you could find the geography questions on various nursing blogs. I could not, but it's worth trying.

TEAS consists of English, Reading, Math and Science and is not hard. You'll be given enough time-I was able to bank at least 10 minutes per section, even though I was not rushing. If you were a decent student in high school and have a good recollection of it, you will probably do fine.
The biggest problem for me was not knowing exactly what to expect.
Math section is heavy on all sorts of conversions such as: decimals to fractions and percentages, Fahrenheit to Celsius, KGs to LBs and so on. Review graphs/charts and their purpose-when would you use bar graph or line graphs. Be able to solve equations such as "x-3=10". Review multiplication tables-you can't use calculators so do lots of simple addition, multiplication, subtraction such as 2359-219, 369*4469 and so on. Know how to calculate the area and peremeters of a circles, triangles, cubes, squares, know Pythagorean theorem, know how to compare different fractions with different bottom part (forgot the name), know some common percentages (25, 35, 75, 50)-this book has an excellent table-memorize it, otherwise, you'll be reinventing the wheel.
I was completely caught off-guard by 3 or 4 Geology questions. You will not find them in any of the books I've used! Also, some Physics questions caused surpirse. I imagine you can read up on that in some basic Earth Science textbooks but who has the time? Moreover, the book's Science section is unnecessarily deep. Aim for basic understanding of concepts. For Chemistry: know bonding, sub-atomic particles, isotops, acids. Don't forget to study the Mendeleev's Table-covered nicely in the book-know what columns and rows represent. It's useful to know some common element symbols (K, Ca, H and so on. Know basic genetics, alleles, phenotypes (mother is short, father is tall-what children are we expecting). Know how to calculate speed, average speed, mean, mode, velocity, electricity (basic), definitions of melting and evaporation. Know the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, basic ecology-like who eats who in the animal chain (grass is the producer, mouse eats grass, hawk eats mice). Know some basic anatomy: stomach, mouth, trachea and so on. Know where South, West, North is on a map (that's easy!). Book covers plants well, memorize what "autotropism" is and some other definitions.
Reading Comprehension review in this book is much more extensive and way harder than was required on the test, but somehow I still managed not to do well on it.. Also, the vocabulary on the actual test was more basic than covered in the book. I found the exam's level to be closer to the GED tests. Also, many questions feature drawing conclusions from graphs and prescription labels presented. Passages are pretty short, but multiple questions are confusing. I found helpful, to pre-read questions before the passages. You will be asked to list main ideas. You really have to pay close attention, but you'll have enough time, so don't rush. Even though this section seemed easy, lots of people fail it.
I found the English to be the easiest section of all, and this book prepared me adequately. Be able to correct some common English usage problems (GED Books). Review basic grammar (especially, commas). Be able to find subjects and verbs. Study easy vocabulary such as "ambivalent", "biannual". Don't go into harder ones of SAT level (ex: aesthetic, zephir, taciturn). Know how to fix a run-on sentence. It's crucial to review all commonly misspelled words. This book did not help me with these sections at all. If anything, it made me more nervous by emphasizing hard vocabulary that turned out to be unnecessary. Again, I'd find a simple GED study guide with test samples in addition to this book, and you'll do fine.
Please know, if you finish each section with time left, you'll be given an option to go back and review that particular section. Be very careful with the reading section, as I changed many correct answers at the end :-(. The tester in the college I took this test never mentioned the option to review.
If I had 4 weeks to practice for the test, this is how I'd handle this knowing what i know now:
1. Study multiplication tables daily-at least 10 minutes and do lots of conversions: drill yourself till it becomes second nature: fractions to decimals and vice versa, decimals to percentages and so on. (This book or any GED book). Kaplan's also has some useful examples.
2. Study this books's Science and Chemistry sections. Should take about 1-2 weeks
6. Study this book's Basic Biology and Basic Physics sections. Alternatively, any pre-nursing test book-covers the same material 1-2 weeks.
3. Take many Reading comprehension tests daily, 20-30 minutes daily, mainly from any GED or SAT preparation manual, focus on short, no more than 2 paragraph passages-chart your improvements-you should see the improvements. Read the questions first. Go for main ideas. This book is ok, but GED books are better for this purpose. Aim to focus better as you read. Learn GED"s most popular vocabulary; unfortunately, it will be more than you'd need, but there is no other way. Also, online tutorials are great.
4. Learn frequently misspelled words. This book does not have it, get them online.
5. Practice GED format questions on how to correct wrong structure sentances: wrong tenses-this book plus any GED book.
6. Know where west, east, north and south are. Know vertical from horizontal. Know directions: clockwise, count clockwise.
be able to tell 90, 180, 360 degrees angles.
7. If you have some extra time, search online about origins of rocks.. Not too deep, just general ideas.
8. Improve your general focusing, and stress relief methods, if this is a problem for you. Good luck!

Deja Review USMLE Step 1, Second Edition Review

Deja Review USMLE Step 1, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

This is an awesome idea and a really useful book. Unfortunately I have found several typos that actually change the meaning of the questions (eg: the wrong receptor name) and found neither a list of errata nor a way to contact the authors. (When you're studying for Step I, you definitely want to know you're getting accurate information.) I will look forward to the next edition instead!

Last Minute Internal Medicine: A Concise Review for the Specialty Boards (Last Minute Series) Review

Last Minute Internal Medicine: A Concise Review for the Specialty Boards (Last Minute Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Essentially a graph and chart review of internal medicine topics. Most are 10-40 pages in length. Gives important points, but not in-depth detail. It may have been a little better format if the charts were all portrait rather than alternating portrait/landscape. For last minute study, it will help you identify key words and phrases. But if you have more study time, use this in conjunction with a standard medical text.

3,000 Solved Problems in Physics (Schaum's Solved Problems) (Schaum's Solved Problems Series) Review

3,000 Solved Problems in Physics (Schaum's Solved Problems) (Schaum's Solved Problems Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This remains my favorite book for physics problem solving since I began using it in 1988. From the basics of vector algebra to the principles of modern physics, the student will find a single source for solved problems (both non-calculus and calculus based). The mathematical notation is clean and simple and the solution to each problem is found immediately beneath it (not hidden at the end of the chapter or collected in the back of the book). The diagrams are elegant and clear, as well, with a minimum of "cute" (and usually irrelevant) materials. The student can add this book to their reference library and it serves as one of the best review texts for the standardized tests (such as the GRE and the MCAT).
