(More customer reviews)I bought this book to augment my text book/studyguide for my University 300 level introductory medical microbiology course. This book fit the bill perfectly. It is in a question and answer format, has pictures, diagrams and quizzes at the end of each chapter. I would read this before I read my textbook, and would do the practice quizzes after I read my textbook and it really helped me to understand and remember the concepts. This study guide is also a lot more up to date than my text book was, so that was nice as well. Great practice quizzes... I got a 4.0!

Vander's Renal Physiology (LANGE Physiology Series) Review

(More customer reviews)For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)
If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

Review of Medical Physiology (LANGE Basic Science) Review

(More customer reviews)I agree with the other reviewers who have pointed out that this is a "review" book and not a textbook, and thus is often too brief and condensed in style for those who are new to the subject of physiology. However, the 'classic' physiology textbooks (i.e. Guyton or Berne & Levy), while excellent when you are new to the subject, are vast tomes - each section being a hundred pages long or more. That's fine when you are starting out, but you will come to them with a heavy heart when you are pushed for time or cramming for exams. That's where Ganong's brevity is a real advantage - it covers all the major points, without "dumbing down" the science which can lead to misconceptions, and it doesn't weigh a tonne. Thus it provides a very comprehensive review of physiology (and a good deal of neuroscience) without breaking either your biceps or your bank !
What I really love about Ganong is that it is so up-to-the-minute. The knowledge that you gain from Berne & Levy and Guyton will be expanded to the next level by Ganong. Sometimes I actually pick it up and read it just for the hell of it, it's so interesting...It's also particularly strong on physiology at the cellular and molecular level, which is obviously increasingly important in modern medicine. I'm a medical student and loads of my friends rave about this book. It has also been recommended to me by a number of doctors and professional scientists. Bravo, Prof Ganong - I'm looking forward to the next edition!

It's perfect as a startup book for your pre-clin medical studies. It's not deep enough in the physiology part (although anatomy and especially histology is very good) but the integrated approach is really terrific and it makes you understand in a whole new way. If you want to become a good doctor, you should absolutely buy this book, or borrow it a least in your library. The first integrated anatomy & physiology book I've read that's deep enough for medical students. Good work Seeley.

The material is presented in a clear fashion. I wish I had this book during my medical physiology course, but I am glad I have it now and I plan on reading it a couple of times for Step I review. The only thing this book could use are some charts and tables, but in conjunction with BRS Physiology, I feel like I can master this subject for the boards.

(More customer reviews)I studied this book for my college anatomy and physiology class. Of course, you need this book to study--without it I would have been lost. There is so much information in this book, makes anatomy and physiology a little easier to learn.
Other recommenations:
I also used Martini's Anatomy and Physiology Textbook as an additonal source. This book filled in the gaps, pictures/digarams were excellent.
Also, Leonardi's, "Anatomy and Phsiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations volumes 1, 2 & 3. The question were comparable to the kind I saw on my college exams...

Field and clinical tests are presented for each component of exercise physiology: aerobic, anaerobic, pulmonary, cardiovacular, body composition, etc. Each chapter begins with enough theoretical background to fully understand the physiological responses. The methods are detailed enough for the novice to follow, but advanced enough for the experienced technician to gain insights. The results and discussion sections provide excellent insights as well as tables of comparative and interpretive data. It is one of my most used shelf and lab references.

That isn't the way I learn. This book takes you through detailed solutions so you can better understand the concepts involved. I didn't have time to read the whole book but whenever I was confused by a professor I could look it up in this book and figure the problem out.

Endocrine Physiology Review

(More customer reviews)This author does a wonderful job explaining endocrinology in a system-based approach. This is by far the best book in its class. It is amazing how Kacsoh blends together molecular biology and clinical medicine to give the reader the best understanding of endocrinology in normal as well as disease states. I read this book as a second year medical student. The explanations, diagrams, and tables are wonderful and were a big help for USMLE 1 and 2 and during the third and fourth years of medical school. In fact, I have found myself pulling it off the shelf nearly every week as a third and fourth year student for a quick review of the diagrams and tables to help in the clinical assessment of patients that I encounter on the wards. This is a must read for medical students that want to not only learn endocrinology, but also apply it.
