Prescott's Microbiology Review

Prescott's Microbiology
Average Reviews:

I learned a hell of a lot more from this text than my professor. It was better written than I expected, it's as up to date as you can expect a textbook to be, and the pictures/diagrams are good. And most importantly, IDENTICAL to the hardback, but cheaper.

The brand new author team of Prescott, Harley and Klein's "Microbiology" continues the tradition of past editions by providing a balanced, comprehensive introduction to all major areas of microbiology. Because of this balance, the "Seventh Edition of Microbiology" is appropriate for microbiology majors and mixed majors courses. The new authors have focused on readability, artwork, and the integration of several key themes (including evolution, ecology and diversity) throughout the text, making an already superior text even better.

An Introduction to Biological Evolution Review

An Introduction to Biological Evolution
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book has over 300 pages and subdivided into 16 easy chapters. It is intended for the college audience particularly for those in their early studies. Ken's writing style could be different from the standard evolutionary college textbook. Furthermore, he choses to "depart from the standard treatment of evolution present in other textbook on evolution wherein the arguments are reductionist, molecular, and overwhelmingly genetic in flavor."
Ken seemed to be very aware of the controversy over evolution and its social implications. However, you will not find him delving into that path which makes this book really interesting. He focuses instead on the basic concepts of biological evolution broad enough for college students, biology teachers and all readers as well.
I find this book informative and straightforward. I recommend this to anybody interested on unbiased treatment on the subject.
Good work Ken.

Written for a general college audience, this book offers an introduction to the principles and significance of Darwinian evolution. It differs from most other textbooks on evolution in three fundamental ways: First, it is intended for students taking evolution early in their studies. Second, it examines the intellectual significance of Darwinian evolution. Third, the text departs from the standard treatment of evolution in other textbooks, wherein the arguments are reductionist, molecular, and overwhelmingly genetic in emphasis.
Ken Kardong, also author of Vertebrates; Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution, is known for his accessible writing style. His almost conversational approach to this topic puts the reader at ease while learning evolutionary concepts. The result is an inviting book -- that will be read.

This books gives a great overview of law related education. Students are introduced to legal issues in the context of real life. It contains practical information for dealing with various legal problems. Students learn how to write to a member of Congress. This book has a section that allows students to consider and decide the outcome of legal situations. They learn variations in local law and prodedures that focus attention on where the student lives. This book is full of photos and highlighted spots to make learning the information quick and easy. The chapters are set up so that you can read that one without knowing the information for the chapter before, so if you wanted to read about food control without reading the background information on "what wellness is" you can. I needed the book for a class and will keep it around for years (I need to put the information in play when i find some free time). THe information is also up to date. I hope this helped.

This international edition is exactly what I needed and for a great price. It is much cheaper than it's American counterpart, which is a hard back. The only downside is that the page edges will bend if you aren't careful, but other than that, it is an amazing intro to Genetics book if you need one.

I was curious when I saw this book listed, and I was very happy and amazed when I read it. This book fills an empty space for teachers and students of AP Biology by providing a comprehensive collection of clear questions of correct content and difficulty. The answer selections are well chosen, and the answers are explained fully and clearly. I will certainly use the questions in this book for homework, quizzes and exams. Trust this book when it says you don't have to know every single detail of your textbook to get a 5. I did, and I did get a 5.
Let's just say I had no idea of how much I had to know for the exam, because I was taking an online course. I had no teacher to prepare me, so I decided to buy three review books for ap bio. Out of the 3 books, this was certainly the best. It gave me just what I needed: a complete, thorough, and fun to read review; practice tests that were extremely similar to the real exam; and it told me how much I had to get right in each section of the exam to get a 5.
The cliffs book was not nearly as good as this one, but the Princeton review was pretty good. So if you're thinking of getting more than one of these review books, my suggestion is 5 steps and Princeton review.
If you do a practice test on this book and do well, you can be sure you'll do just as fine in the real exam.

Patten's Foundation of Embryology (College Custom)
Average Reviews:

The text of Foundations of Embryology was at times rather advanced and technical but the pictures made the book really worth while! There are thousands of pictures (electron micrographs, light micrographs, and many others including numerous hand-made drawings from Patten himself).Although the majority of the photographs are in black and white, there is a section which contains colored versions of the most important pictures. This book is a must for undergraduate students of biology and professional students who must take courses in embryology.

One of the standard texts in the field of embryology, Foundations of Embryology is superior to others in its comprehensive but readable account of embryonic development with outstanding illustrations. The sixth edition continues to present the story of vertebrate embryonic development in a clear and sequential manner. This text, more than any other on the market, will provide the readers with an entree into the morphology of development in a way that allows them to relate molecules and morphology.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 Steps to a 5: AP Biology, Second Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series)
Average Reviews:

I simply looooove this book. The books I used for my AP bio was the Cliffs book and this book. The two go along so well together!
What I love most about this book is that it is really fun to study. While the Cliffs book presents facts point by point and summarizes well, this book actually makes you feel sort of like (a little hyperbole here hehe) reading a novel. The way the author writes is really cute. There are a lot of little jokes, and in the organic section, he actually makes you get on board a tour bus into the human body. Corny, yes, but cute and funny. At the end of the organics section, the bus gets eaten by a macrophage or something. And there was this :::Aplause::: in really big fonts that made me wonder what it was about. When I got to that section, I discovered that it was a standing ovation for the actin-myosin tango that explained how our muscle works. By the way, this was the ONLY book through which I could understand how the muscle worked.(Not even the cliffs book!)
The practice tests are good, but I think the Cliffs book does a better job in the essay part. But there were information not in the Cliffs book but in this book only that showed up in the AP exam! I don't quite remember but it was some kind of thing that controlled whether the cell was to grow or not. I remember being delighted to see the familiar word during the exam. (I thought something like, hey! This was the thing in the Mcgrawhill book! So cliffs wasn't the bible after all!) Oh and this book does a really good job of presenting the genetic disorders like the down syndrome and phenylketonuria and stuff like that.
I think studying with the cliffs first, reading this book next, doing the practice tests (I actually bought the cliffs 5 ap bio practice tests and it was pretty good, too.. although I only did two of its tests) would prepare you pretty well for the exam. I EASILY got a five out of those books. Yeah~~ I didn't give or throw away this book so that I could refer to it later, and maybe read it when I need help from the boring bio textbooks.

Schaum's Outline of Biology Review

Schaum's Outline of Biology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're using this to review for a test (mine was the DAT), Schaum's is a good choice. A previous reviewer complained that the book is poorly organized and has too much historical detail; this is partially true, but this book is also much more compact than a standard intro Bio text and covers just about everything you will need. After you understand how things work, biology is really just a collection of facts that you need to memorize (e.g., glucose is first turned to glucose 6-phosphate in glycolysis or the excretory organs of insects are Malphigian tubules).
The way I would go about preparing is to make a list of biology topics that you need help with the most (topics you need the most review with first, topics you need the least review with last) and study them in that order. Consult your school text to clarify if you still have trouble understanding a concept. Then get a spiral notebook and jot down everything you think is important to remember - keep this notebook handy and find a time to go over it regularly (like before you go to bed at night). You will find that after a few reads, it is possible to know just about everything important covered in the book. It is quite easy to cover 1 - 3 chapters a day using this method, depending on how well you already understand the topic and there are a total of 33 chapters, making a one month review of Biology very doable.
Good luck.
