The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage Review

The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Broadly speaking, this is an excellent handbook, a superb handbook. The concepts are explained clearly and the examples are very instructive. What is in the handbook is treated very lucidly and thoroughly and with considerable depth. I personally was impressed at the depth and detail in which some of the grammar is covered.
The only real problems with the handbook don't concern what is in the book--it's what isn't. There are nuances in subject-verb agreement which aren't included, areas such as impersonal expressions are absent, and there is no mention of the subjunctive. If one is preparing for the TOEFL, this is a good book to get but I would not make it the only text you study, since it is not exhaustive by any means.
Still, there is a good amount of very useful information excellently explained here. I would offer a warm qualified recommendation to ESL students, one a bit nuanced. For the ESL student with absolutely no interest in the subject, who feels that study of English in general is one big long painful injection in the gluteus maximus, a tortuous experience only to be endured and not enjoyed in any way, this book is going to come off nebulous and long-winded. Granted, the book does not give one simply the bare bones of a concept and leave enough alone; for the student who wants merely to ratchet together enough knowledge to pass a few tests and move on, this book might be a bit too dedicated to its subject material. For the student with some real interest in learning English and learning it well, however, this book definitely rewards a patient and attentive reader because ideas are not merely presented but amply explained, and in handsome detail. If one is preparing for the TOEFL, be sure to buy the TOEFL preparation book by Barron's, which will explain a host of tricks presented on the test but which are notably absent in this book. This book is excellent for the concepts it covers, but it doesn't cover enough for the testtaker, so be sure to purchase other sources for your test preparation.

The Elusive Eden: A New History of California Review

The Elusive Eden: A New History of California
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
History can be exciting, especially when the high points are rendered with such immediacy and clarity. California is both a microcosm and macrocaosm of American History. Richard Rice makes this connection resonant from the original Sutter's Mill gold rush to the current Silicon Valley "gold rush". The themes that define California are U.S. history writ large. Rice lets the reader appreciate California from a variety of personal perspectives: Henry Dana's in "Two Years Before The Mast", Leland Stanford and the other "robber barrons", Hiram Johnson and the reformers, into world war two and the Nisei internees, down through Reagan and the Brown family, and into current times. The history of water rights, which was the basis of the movie Chinatown, becomes a compelling and more accurate story here. The lucid prose is admirably supported by evocative photography. Discover California as it really was and is.

Essentials of English Grammar: A Quick Guide To Good English
Average Reviews:

I love this book. This is a thin book so easy to carry and has almost everything that you need in your day to day work. The book is extremely handy and essential if you are writing essays or even letters. English is not my first language so sometimes I use it. To be honest everyday. I like the book. The other good thing is that it is succint and do not take you through 50 pages of example. Very practical book> But this is not for the ones who are majoring in Enlgish language and wants to write a thesis on literature. So please judge your purpose and then buy it

This book is very well written and while short in length this book is long on interesting Anthropological content. I picked this up for an Anthropology class and I enjoyed the book so much that I've recommended it to friends.

Written specifically for students, this ethnography provides an engaging, real-life account of the transition from a traditional to a modern culture. It uses vibrant personal stories and ethnographic examples to connect developments among the Gebusi of Papua New Guinea to key topics in cultural anthropology, including comparative features of subsistence, kinship, politics, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationalism, and modern development. In the early 1980s, the Gebusi conducted ritual dances and spirit seances, practiced alternative sexual customs, and endured high rate of violence.By 1998, most Gebusi had converted to Christianity and were actively engaged in market activity, disco music, sports leagues, and school. In 2008, however, public services and the cash economy had deteriorated, and people relied increasingly on their traditional customs and practices. This second edition of The Gebusi vividly portrays both the traditions and the modern challenges of Gebusi society and culture with updated content throughout and surprising new conclusions based on the author's return to the Gebusi in 2008.

Correct Your English Errors: How to Avoid 99% of the Common Mistakes Made by Learners of English
Average Reviews:

This is a fantastic resource for English learners. The author has admirably condensed decades of his experience with teaching English (and teaching teachers of English) into an easy-to-use guide that explains the commonest errors, why they're wrong, and how to correct them. What really shines through on every page is Dr. Collins' empathy for and patience with speakers of other languages: his explanations are straightforward and uncluttered: he just wants the reader to understand what the problem is and how to correct it. I recommend this book to any learner of English who wants to "go native," speaking and writing as if English were your first language.

Privilege, Power, and Difference Review

Privilege, Power, and Difference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first saw the title for this book, I thought it was going to be another of those books that make you feel sick and worthless once you get to the end. This couldn't have been further from the truth. Allen's book was engaging, gentle, but powerful. It was thorough in describing the impact of power and privilege in a way that can be felt and understood even by those who are not familiar with (or generally interested in) critical studies and sociology. I found this to be a text that I could engage with, but also one that I could share with those who had a hard time seeing the lines of power and how they impact all of our relationships in many different ways.
I highly recommend this book both to those who have worked with the material of oppression for a long time as well as for those who are struggling to understand what it's all about. The book is powerful and gentle at the same time - something that is very important when dealing with issues of oppression and equity.

This brief supplemental book provides students with an easily applied theoretical model for thinking about systems of privilege and difference. Writing in accessible, conversational prose, Johnson joins theory with engaging examples in ways that enable students to see the nature and consequences of privilege and their connection to it.

For example how to include graphs and tables in the text and statistical information as well as calculations made etc. I couldn't find that in this book. It does give you a good view of how to write a research paper if you are studieing phsychology, history or something like that. It is very clear written though and it is a good book to start with.
