The Japanese Have a Word for It: The Complete Guide to Japanese Thought and Culture Review

The Japanese Have a Word for It: The Complete Guide to Japanese Thought and Culture

He may not be Reischauer but Mr. De Mente packs enough cultural and historical background into this book to make it a worthy read for Japanese scholars or anyone with an interest in Japan. The author presents the reader with about 150 Japanese words and phrases that have special meaning for the Japanese. For example, he translates the word "kamatoto" into English as "The Dumb Blonde" i.e the Japanese propensity to feign innocence in order to gain the upper hand in a relationship or business deal. "Wa" or "harmony" is succinctly though brilliantly explained and would be something any foreign businessperson dealing with Japan should appreciate. I have read other books by Mr. De Mente but this is by far his most informative and well written. Recommended!

Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity + Student CD-ROM + Powerweb Review

Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity + Student CD-ROM + Powerweb
Average Reviews:

This book is 2-part.
The first part involves Physical Anthropology.
The second part is Cultural Anthropology.
I am very fortunate that my college uses this book for both courses: Physical and Cultural anthropology. You may get lucky too. Ask your professor if this book is used in more than one course before you sell it back.
There is (or should be in the new books) a CD that is included. This is a fantastic visual media that supplements the book nicely. Here is a hint however, go to the book's/author's website before purchasing this text new.
On another note, the book is so well written and is so up-to-date that I will be keeping it and referring back to it for many years to come.
The author recounts his own experiences throughout this text and is a well known and respected anthropologist. It may be worth your time to do a search for articles he has written by logging into anthrosource.com.

Written specifically for students, this ethnography provides an engaging, real-life account of the transition from a traditional to a modern culture. It uses vibrant personal stories and ethnographic examples to connect developments among the Gebusi of Papua New Guinea to key topics in cultural anthropology, including comparative features of subsistence, kinship, politics, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationalism, and modern development. In the early 1980s, the Gebusi conducted ritual dances and spirit seances, practiced alternative sexual customs, and endured high rate of violence.By 1998, most Gebusi had converted to Christianity and were actively engaged in market activity, disco music, sports leagues, and school. In 2008, however, public services and the cash economy had deteriorated, and people relied increasingly on their traditional customs and practices. This second edition of The Gebusi vividly portrays both the traditions and the modern challenges of Gebusi society and culture with updated content throughout and surprising new conclusions based on the author's return to the Gebusi in 2008.

Qualitative Methods in Social Research Review

Qualitative Methods in Social Research
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a fair amount of experience as a qualitative researcher (still lots to learn). I have also twice taught a qualitative research methods class for undergraduates. Based on my research experience, my knowledge of other research texts, and my experience and needs as a teacher, this is a terrific book. I am very glad I found it and recommend it without hesitation to other researchers, would-be researchers, and teachers of qualitative research methods, undergraduate or graduate.
Esterberg does a great job of presenting the essential approaches, techniques, and issues, in a very easy-to-read style. As a teacher, it was a pleasure to be able to assign a chapter to my students knowing that it would not be overly long, that they could read it with little difficulty, and that Esterberg presented what I wanted them to know. I didn't have to supplement to make up gaps, tell them to skip sections because the author tried to be encyclopedic, or spend a lot of time in class explaining portions that were unclear. I could instead build on what they read and focus on their actually learning what Esterberg presented.
Now if I could only find a text that does the same for quantitative methods...
