Thinking Like an Anthropologist: A Practical Introduction to Cultural Anthropology Review

Thinking Like an Anthropologist: A Practical Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

This is the best introductory textbook to anthropology that I've read so far, and was recommended to me by a friend who teaches first-year anthropology (my second-favorite is Investigating Culture: An Experiential Introduction to Anthropology, which also tries to ask questions, but not as broadly).
Rather than giving student a pat list of human domains (economy, family, government) and the same old "exotic" practices of African hunter-gatherers - and all of this straight out of the 1950s - Omohundro actually teaches students how to think like a modern-day anthropologist: by asking questions, and looking at one issue from many angles.
His 11 questions are, briefly:
* What is Culture?
* How Do I Learn About Culture?
* What is the Context for This Practice or Idea?
* Do Other Societies Do Something Like This?
* What Was This Idea or Practice Like in the Past?
* How are Human Biology, Culture, and Environment Interacting?
* What Are the Groups and Relationships?
* What Does That Mean?
* What is My Perspective?
* Am I Judging This?
* What Do the People Say?
Using his own experience studying Newfoundlanders in Canada, as well as a large variety of exercises that can be done in class or as homework, he encourages students to ask these questions about the world around them, and in doing so, learn how to think like an anthropologist. Well done!

This exciting new text teases out the common core of the cultural anthropological way of thinking, makes it explicit in a set of eleven questions, and uses those questions to enhance learning. Each question receives treatment in a brief chapter, accompanied by several exercises and classroom demonstrations.The textbook is intended to be accompanied by—and applied to—a reader, a few ethnographies, or a monograph with topical focus such as language, globalization, technology, art, or gender. The eleven questions that organize the text can be applied singly and cumulatively to address the cultures presented in the ethnographies or case studies chosen by each instructor.A comprehensive guide written by John Omohundro assists instructors who adopt this novel approach and suggests numerous examples of ethnographies and readers that would be effective companions for the text.

Anthropology: Appreciating Human Diversity Review

Anthropology: Appreciating Human Diversity
Average Reviews:

Books like this are a good start to appreciating human diversity, which goes way beyond what we imagine possible, in our Newtonian/Cartesian world view. I do so love Anthropology. If you want to go further with diversity of what is possible, other books, Urban Shaman, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It!, Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, ThetaHealing can be helpful; all are written by Americans, in a distinctly nonacademic way. Grandfather is an intro to a different kind of world, as isWhispers of the ncients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time, and House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, or Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1). Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives is a very superficial discussion of what indigenous spiritual apprenticeship could be. Chi Kung: Way of Power and Wong Kiew Kit's books show some unusual survivals of nonwestern ideas in Chinese culture. Joseph Murphy The Power of Your Subconscious Mind gives some idea of just how diverse even just America can be. This book is a good start, like a tourist guide to human diversity. I have to say I enjoyed Dr. Kottak's classes immensely, he is a very entertaining speaker, in addition to having a lot of knowledge.

Culture Sketches: Case Studies in Anthropology Review

Culture Sketches: Case Studies in Anthropology
Average Reviews:

Peters-Golden's Culture Sketches is a must have for any student of anthropology or anyone interested in the basics of anthropology. Each chapter reviews and details a particular culture/society and explains the particular culture in an academic and laymans way. In other terms, the book is easy to understand even if you do not know a thing about anthropology and it provides useful information for students and academics alike about 13 societies that exist or have existed on this planet. These are not detailed ethnographies, i.e. they do not explain every thing about the society. Peters-Golden gives a taste of each society and encourages to further explore the societies that interest the reader. If you are a student looking for an insight on what anthropologists study (such as economic systems, religion, rituals, beliefs in magic and mystics, marriage rites, rites of passage, etc) or anyone else who is curious about the other societies on this planet, this book is for you.

Ideal for any Cultural Anthropology course, this brief and inexpensive collection of ethnographic case studies exposes students to fifteen different cultures. Culture Sketches introduces students to ethnography without overwhelming them with excessive reading material. Each sketch, or chapter, was selected for its relevance to students and for its ability to reflect the basic concepts found in introductory courses. All sketches follow a logical, consistent organization that makes it easy for students to understand major themes such as geography, myth creation, history, sociopolitical systems, and belief systems. The new edition offers a new chapter, "The Roma: Romanipe, Rights, and the Road Ahead", adding geographic breadth to the text.

Mirror for Humanity: A Concise Introduction to Cultural Anthropology Review

Mirror for Humanity: A Concise Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

There is little wasted space in this book. It is to the point. This brevity for me was ideal, but for some readers, perhaps they need more examples. For use in a classroom setting, this is an especially useful work if used in conjunction with a readings from cultural anthropology text such as "Conformity and Conflict." The two complement each other very well. More specifically, I found the latter part of MFH especially interesting-- the chapters dealing with gender, the world system, and stratification. MFH should not only appeal to those within the field of cultural anthropology but also should draw the attention of students working within the sister disciplines of history and sociology.
