Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity + Student CD-ROM + Powerweb Review

Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity + Student CD-ROM + Powerweb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is 2-part.
The first part involves Physical Anthropology.
The second part is Cultural Anthropology.
I am very fortunate that my college uses this book for both courses: Physical and Cultural anthropology. You may get lucky too. Ask your professor if this book is used in more than one course before you sell it back.
There is (or should be in the new books) a CD that is included. This is a fantastic visual media that supplements the book nicely. Here is a hint however, go to the book's/author's website before purchasing this text new.
On another note, the book is so well written and is so up-to-date that I will be keeping it and referring back to it for many years to come.
The author recounts his own experiences throughout this text and is a well known and respected anthropologist. It may be worth your time to do a search for articles he has written by logging into anthrosource.com.

Jones/George, Essentials of Contemporary Management is the concise edition of the market bestselling textbook by the same author team. Jones and George are dedicated to the challenge of "Making It Real" for students. The authors present management in a way that makes its relevance obvious even to students who might lack exposure to a "real-life" management context. This is accomplished thru a diverse set of examples, and the unique, and most popular feature of the text, the "Manager as a Person" Chapter 2. This chapter discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems and this theme is carried thru the remaining chapters. This text also discusses the importance of management competencies--the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, globalization, and information technology are integrated throughout.

Feminist Frontiers Review

Feminist Frontiers
Average Reviews:

This book is a compilation of essays done by both male and female authors. It shows the diversity of topics, issues, and points of views of feminists. This book was my text book for Women's Studies 101 and I didn't have to read all of it for the class, but I found myself reading a lot of the other essays because the topic was interesting to me or I identified with it or it was a topic I wanted to know more about. It broadened my view of how feminists aren't just about equality for women, but for everyone including breaking stereotypes that men have to endure. I kept this book even after my class was over. I recommend this book to everyone !

The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Volume 2 Review

The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Volume 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alan Brinkley has put together a wonderfully readable, balanced, and thorough history of the US, in just under a thousand pages. It would be ideal for college introductory classes (or very sophisticated high school students); particularly welcome are the selections from primary sources ("American Voices") that often represent other-than-white-male views, but include William Bradford on landing at Plymouth and Nixon on China, and the dozen or so segments called "Debating the Past" that reviw the differing perspectives historians have taken on such topics as slavery, populism, and Viet Nam. I have been a teacher for a quarter of a century, and this is the book I wish I'd had all that time

SAT 2400 : A Sneak Preview of the New SAT English Test Review

SAT 2400 : A Sneak Preview of the New SAT English Test
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This practical volume -- a fraction of the size of most test- preparation tomes -- does an admirable job of preparing students for the verbal portion of the New SAT. After an overview of the test and instructions about how to use the book, Author Laurie Rozakis, Ph.D., offers a diagnostic verbal test so that students can identify their strengths and weaknesses, and determine how their preparation time can most effectively be spent. The diagnostic test includes time limits, an essay prompt, and a cut-out answer sheet for the multiple-choice questions. The answer key includes detailed explanations as to *why* an answer is right or wrong.
After the diagnostic test, Rozakis provides strategies for approaching each type of test question. Sample questions provide opportunity for practice, and answers are thoroughly explained. Rozakis's strategies for the essay address organization as well as the critical issue of time management.
Ample white space makes the book user-friendly, and typographical devices make the different kinds of information easy to find.
Rozakis offers about ten pages of content review (sentences, modifiers, pronouns, etc.) for the writing component of the test. While this may be helpful to those basically familiar with the information, many students will require more than this cursory brushup.
Two additional practice tests (complete with cut-out answer sheet and fully explained answers) round out the book. An index enables users to quickly find desired information.

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outline Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many freshman college physics textbooks are just awful. They often go on and on about what is obvious and gloss over the finer points...and of course there are no examples. This is where this book comes in. As in all Schaum's outlines, for each topic there are a few pages of theory including equations, then some problems with the solutions worked out extensively, and then finally some problems with the answers but no extensive solution. The format of the outline is the same that you should expect in any two semester college freshman physics sequence. The first part of the book is an explanation of vectors, newtonian mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics. The second part of the book follows the usual second semester of freshman physics - electricity, magnetism, and optics. The final seven chapters of the outline are an introduction to modern physics, which engineers and physics students would normally take after they finish the two semester freshman physics sequence. A note of caution - do not buy the attractively named "Schaums Outline of Physics for Engineering and Science". It is chocked full of errors! Instead, stay with this old reliable title. It is the best. This is the very recently released 10th edition, so Amazon does not show the table of contents. I do that here so you can compare it to the 9th edition and see if it is worth the upgrade.

75 Readings: An Anthology Review

75 Readings: An Anthology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I adopted this book for two sections of ENG 101 at a community college. I know there is a controversy over teaching literature in ENG 101 and this is not a literary collection. Indeed, the selections are well rounded.
I approach teaching this class with several concerns foremost in my mind:
The poor vocabularies of today's young people.
The inadequate knowledge of science among the same group.
The manner in which discussions of history are conducted in this country.
The fact that so little literature is read by far too many of today's students.
The death of the sophomore literature survey course (Romantic Poets, Elizabethan Drama, Contemporary Drama, 19th C. American Literature, etc.)
I selected this book because it has selections on science, history and politics as well as memoirs and classics (Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal).
101 is the introduction to college writing and the course that teaches students how to research. I offer the students 8 choices of what I call projects, books which should serve as the basis for their research paper as well as for a compare and contrast paper (one of three essays). This semester, I offered them Shakespeare's 12th Night; The Short Stories of Eudora Welty; The Narrative of Frederick Douglass; Brave New World; Nineteen Eighty-Four; Poems of Love; the Ramona Quimby novels of Beverly Cleary, and Ever Since Darwin by Stephen Jay Gould. The idea is to offer substance and choice; stimulate thought and dialog; familiarize them with history and science; look ahead to potential teaching careers and more.
I do not teach a political point of view. No responsible teacher should. That Buscemi and Smith included opposing views on global warming and social responsibility is wonderful. But, I do have problems with two of the essays, both in the cause and effect section. One is by Shelby Steele and the other by Barbara Dafoe Whitehead. As both authors represent a conservative point of view, I would love to have the students read these essays. Steele's old essay, written in 1990, displays his anger and his conservative politics. Are these teenaged students sophisticated enough to tease out that his stance stems from both? Whitehead's piece earned from me the same criticism that others have leveled at the organization she co-directs, the National Marriage Project: that some of her (its) claims are not substantiated. Recognizing her tendency toward strawman arguments, I can choose to ignore her work, and, I probably will. However, I could pair it the Jonathan Kozal essay offered in the argument section of the book (and with a couple of selected installments of Mad Men, if I had the time), but. . . is there a value in offering an example of bad writing? That is the crux of the matter, isn't it?
So, why did Buscemi and Smith offer a flawed, incendiary piece (Steele's) and a sloppily written piece in an otherwise excellent anthology?

Anthropology: Appreciating Human Diversity Review

Anthropology: Appreciating Human Diversity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Books like this are a good start to appreciating human diversity, which goes way beyond what we imagine possible, in our Newtonian/Cartesian world view. I do so love Anthropology. If you want to go further with diversity of what is possible, other books, Urban Shaman, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It!, Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, ThetaHealing can be helpful; all are written by Americans, in a distinctly nonacademic way. Grandfather is an intro to a different kind of world, as isWhispers of the ncients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time, and House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, or Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1). Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives is a very superficial discussion of what indigenous spiritual apprenticeship could be. Chi Kung: Way of Power and Wong Kiew Kit's books show some unusual survivals of nonwestern ideas in Chinese culture. Joseph Murphy The Power of Your Subconscious Mind gives some idea of just how diverse even just America can be. This book is a good start, like a tourist guide to human diversity. I have to say I enjoyed Dr. Kottak's classes immensely, he is a very entertaining speaker, in addition to having a lot of knowledge.

International Financial Management Review

International Financial Management
Average Reviews:

This book set me up very nicely for a career in forex markets. Possibly the gentlest introduction to international finance, the book does not waste any time with implementation of the ideas, instead provides you with the requisite knowledge, and illustrative examples. I had the fortune of being taught the subject by the author (Dr. Eun), and so the book was fully utilized. However, other teachers would also find the book an ideal companion to course notes. In fact, the book is so well written, it seems like a tutorial. You cannot go wrong if you are using it for international finance courses. The book will also help you with preparation for the CFA charter examinations.

"International Financial Management" is written based on two distinct parts: emphasis on the basics and emphasis on a managerial perspective. The emphasis on the basics will allow students to be left with a framework for analysis that will serve them well when they need to apply this material in their careers in the years ahead. The Fifth Edition never loses sight of the presentation that is teaching students how to make managerial decisions. The new edition is founded in the belief that the fundamental job of the financial manager is to maximize share-holder wealth. This belief permeates the decision-making process that is presented from cover to cover. "International Financial Management" has been completely updated with the most current data tables and statistics in the field today.
