Jones/George, Essentials of Contemporary Management is the concise edition of the market bestselling textbook by the same author team. Jones and George are dedicated to the challenge of "Making It Real" for students. The authors present management in a way that makes its relevance obvious even to students who might lack exposure to a "real-life" management context. This is accomplished thru a diverse set of examples, and the unique, and most popular feature of the text, the "Manager as a Person" Chapter 2. This chapter discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems and this theme is carried thru the remaining chapters. This text also discusses the importance of management competencies--the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, globalization, and information technology are integrated throughout.

Managing Change: Cases and Concepts Review

Managing Change: Cases and Concepts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although slightly dated Managing Change has become a classic of the genre and a favourite of business schools. For good reason. The book comprises some of the most useful academic articles on change management published in academic journals in the 1980s and early 1990s as well as case studies. The latter are well selected and will help to generate furious debate in any group that studies them. Jick's own contributions provide balanced and thoughtful links between the pieces as well as several articles on issues like the role of vision statements and implementing change.
Any one interested in change management will need this book. Although there are no `formulas' for the right way to introduce change programs, a thoughtful reading of the material in this book can only improve one's ability to implement change and to understand how others react to it.
Why four stars rather than five? The price of the book is unbelievable and (I suspect) hard to justify given the large numbers which would have sold in business schools. It's sad that no paperback edition is available for students either. I understand an updated edition is being prepared.

"Managing Change: Text and Cases", 2nd Edition, by Todd Jick and Maury Peiperl is a thoroughly revised version of a well-received volume on the scholarship of change in organizations. It is comprised of six modules that introduce common threads in the ensuing case studies and readings on organizational change. Of the 48 items in this book, 31 are new to this edition. The module introductions have been thoroughly revised; one modular introduction (Module 6, Continuous Change) is brand new.

Management and Organizational Behavior Classics Review

Management and Organizational Behavior Classics

This is a book of profound proportions. Matteson and Ivancevich originally printed their first version of this book titled simply Management Classics with Goodyear publishing way back in 1980. Trust me for the money you will not find a better compilation of management and organization thought anywhere. This is a well researched and edited selection of management articles from the enormous names of the 20th century: McGregor, Parker, Bernard, et. al. If you are a business professor, a biz student, or a businessperson who truly wants to approach management in a scholarly and logical manner, then do yourself and your bookshelf a favor and buy it.

If you are an entrepreneur, don't buy this 1998 edition, buy the 1995 version. This new edition is basically just a text book with cases and questions. It would be great for an MBA class but not someone who wanted to start their own business. The 1995 version of this book, also sold on Amazon, is fantastic for entrepreneurs. It has over 700 pages of information, worksheets and examples. Do yourself a favor, buy the older version.

This International Version is identical to the US Version. Compare them page by page and you will find no difference, except for the cover and the ISBN. You can save some money by buying this version instead of the US version. About the book: it is fairly concise, nicely organized, and very user-friendly. The information presented in every chapter is relevant and up to date. I was required to purchase this book to use in my Supervision class; however, I think that if I were to choose a textbook myself, this one would be at the top of the list.

It was developed from Christensen's Harvard course and it helps students and managers learn to address the issues related to managing innovation more effectively. Its first purpose is to help them understand the challenges of coordination and interoperability in innovation and to equip them with the tools to manage these complex interactions effectively. Performance Management Review

Performance Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are probably a dozen or so books on this subject that are equally good, and I'm not sure that any book is significantly better than the others in that grouping.
I happen to like this book, and use it in my HR work and in my company. Its length and to-the-point style make it ideal for busy managers, and it is indeed about as practical as it can get.
Its strength though, is that it breaks out of some of the conventional thinking about performance management and appraisal. For example, it points out that performance problems can indeed be attributed to weakness in an employee, but may also be caused by problems in the actual system of work. In this respect it draws from systems thinking and takes into account some of the criticisms of Deming, Scholtes and others.
My favorite part has to be the idea of "no blame", and that the purpose of performance management and appraisal is not to punish or even to reward, but to identify barriers to performance, and work together with the employee to remove them, no matter where they come from. Since the goal is better individual performance which contributes to organizational performance, I think this is practical indeed.
There's a positiveness to this book. If you think performance management and appraisal are excuses to kick [behind] and blame people for failure, then don't get this book, get a whip and chair.

This is the first book on work team or any kind of teams that acknowledges how difficult and trying team work and team management can be. It's full of useful suggestions and insightful thinking. Conflict Resolution Review

Conflict Resolution
Average Reviews:

I found this book to be of tremendous value. Conflict Resolution is an easy to read resource that is full of practical information that can be applied immediately on the job. It is not only a must-have for managers and supervisors, but also an essential resource for anyone who would like to have more effective relationships and live a conflict free life. Daniel Dana writes with a friendly and often humorus style and it is clear that he has a vast knowledge of this topic. He has a great ability to take a complex subject and make it simple and easy to use with specific "how-to" steps, and that really makes this book valuable to me. I have now successfully used the resolution approaches outlined in this book both in my profession as a consultant and trainer, and in a family conflict situation that was causing a lot of pain. Additionally, the ideas in this book have worked for me in both one-on-one conflicts and group conflicts. The bottom line - this works.

Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions) Review

Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book serves as a basic introduction to retail, though it often feels like "baby talk". It basically describes, without much analysis, the types of policies retailers adopt in several areas including merchandising, inventory management, ordering, HR, finance, store layout, etc. Good as a reference to what others are doing, but not at the cutting edge of retail.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Retailing Management (McGraw Hill International Editions)

Known for its strategic look at retailing and current coverage, this new 6th edition continues to be organized around a model of strategic decision-making. One of the major advantages of the Levy/Weitz approach is the text's readability, organization, and its emphasis on how students can come to grips with real retailing issues and be able to solve problems. The text's logical organization around a decision-making process allows readers to learn about the process of strategic decisions first before moving on to decision implementation. The implementation decisions are broken down into merchandise management decisions and store management decisions, just as they would be in a real retailing setting. The text provides a balanced treatment of strategic, "how to," and conceptual material, in a highly readable and interesting format. The sixth edition continues its cutting edge coverage on the latest topics and developments in retailing including globalization, customer relationship management programs, multi-channel retailing, supply chain management, and the use of the Internet to improve operating efficiencies and customer service.Students indicate that this text is a "good read" because of the numerous examples of retailers, their practices, the interesting retail facts in the margins, and eye catching design and layout. Retailing is a high tech, global, growth industry that provides challenging and rewarding career opportunities for college graduates. This book and its corresponding tools and exercises were written to expose students to the excitement of retailing and prepare them for a career in retailing and related fields.

Organizational Behavior: Essentials for Improving Performance and Commitment Review

Organizational Behavior: Essentials for Improving Performance and Commitment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great tool in learning organizational behavior in the workplace. Good examples and assessment tools.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Organizational Behavior: Essentials for Improving Performance and Commitment

Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson's Organizational Behavior: Essentials for Improving Performance and Commitment in the Workplace represents the most up-to-date perspective on Organizational Behavior (OB) on the market today. Many students leave their OB courses asking questions like: "Does any of this stuff really matter?", "How does all this stuff fit together?", "If that theory doesn't work, why is it in the book?", and "Does this stuff have to be so dry?" Those questions will never be asked if Colquitt Essentials is used. The author team has written a text that highlights the importance of course topics while organizing them around an integrative model of OB. The text is also contemporary, omitting outdated and disproven models that remain in other texts. Most important to students, the text is written in an approachable, conversational tone, with features that students actually want to read. Colquitt Essentials is the complete package in a condensed, unique, and visually stimulating format, all without losing the integrity and level of quality we've come to expect from this author team. This text stands out from the competition for four key reasons:
A Focus on Performance and Commitment. Being a good performer and working for an employer that inspires commitment are critical concerns for employees and managers alike. Colquitt Essentials takes a unique approach by devoting Chapter 2 to job performance and organizational commitment. Once these two key outcomes have been spotlighted, all of the remaining chapters are linked back to them, illustrating the importance of the chapter topics to performance and commitment.
An Integrative Model of OB. The table of contents is organized around an integrative model, described in Chapter 1, that provides a roadmap for the course, showing students how all of the chapters fit together. Unlike many OB texts with many editions behind them, Colquitt Essentials avoids being "grab-baggish" in nature with what seem to be randomly placed topics. The positioning of every topic makes sense, and it's easy for students to understand how the topics they are studying fit into the bigger picture.
Contemporary Content. When creating the book, the author team asked themselves what OB texts would look like if all of them were first written in 2008. Many OB texts include outdated and disproven models, just to maintain continuity with earlier editions. Such content frustrates students, who don't understand why they should learn theories that are not valid. Colquitt Essentials omits such theories, devoting more space to contemporary topics that are useful for employees and managers.
Features that Students Want to Read. Each chapter includes special insert box features like OB on Screen, OB in Sports, OB for Students, and OB Internationally that help "bring OB to life" for the reader. Many of these features have been praised by students for their ability to demonstrate OB content in a fun and appealing manner. Colquitt Essentials also uses an informal style that students enjoy reading, while focusing on company examples that students find interesting (Google, Netflix, Best Buy, Four Seasons, eBay, and others).

Leadership (Mcgraw-Hill International Editions) Review

Leadership (Mcgraw-Hill International Editions)
Average Reviews:

Can a textbook be delightfully written? This one is. Authors Richard L. Hughes, Robert C. Ginnett, and Gordon J. Curphy explore every aspect of leadership and smoothly weave research conclusions into the narrative. Examples abound, from Colin Powell to Walt Disney. The authors are all psychologists who specialize in leadership issues. They have written conversationally and intelligently, using plenty of sidebar material (even famous cartoons) to bring their reporting to life. We [...] recommend this classic (now in its third edition) to everyone interested.

"Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience, 4e", was written for the general student to serve as a stand-alone introduction to the subject of leadership. The text consists of 13 chapters and a final section on Basic and Advanced Leadership Skills. Authors Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy have drawn upon three different types of literature: empirical studies; interesting anecdotes, stories and findings; and leadership skills to create a text that is personally relevant, interesting and scholarly. The authors' unique quest for a careful balancing act of leadership materials will help students apply theory and research to their real-life experiences.
