Management Strategy: Achieving Sustained Competitive Advantage, 2e, by Alfred Marcus, is a brief, focused paperback text, allowing ample time for the instructor to incorporate other materials commonly used in this course, such as cases, readings, and/or simulations. The text focuses on how making winning moves depends on finding profitable patterns that repeatedly meet customer demands for solutions. Whereas many strategy books have lost sight of the purpose of strategy and fail to show how decisions actually affect business performance and, ultimately, outcomes, Management Strategy focuses on the types of analyses and strategic moves required, given the industry, environment, and a company's internal resources. In eight chapters, this textbook builds upon the analysis process and demonstrates how strategy impacts an organization's position in comparison to its competitors, both in terms of the cost and quality of its products and the scope of businesses in which it is involved (vertical and horizontal integration), as well as its global versus domestic reach. The outcomes that come from analyzing an organization also determine the extent to which the organization will strive to be an innovator as opposed to being a follower.

An excellent piece of work for readers on innovation and market dynamics. Interesting case studies.
The Instructor's manual is also a great substitute: ASIN: 0073659169

Clay Christensen is world-renowned in the field of innovation. His book is the first general manager's instruction kit for managing innovation. It was developed from Christensen's Harvard course and it helps students and managers learn to address the issues related to managing innovation more effectively. Its first purpose is to help them understand the challenges of coordination and interoperability in innovation and to equip them with the tools to manage these complex interactions effectively. Its second purpose it to help future managers develop an intuition for sorting out symptoms from their underlying causes and to give them vicarious experience, through case studies, in resolving those root causes.

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach Review

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Early in this book the author tells us that business models are about making money. They are sometimes called business concepts or profit models. The author warns us to not confuse revenue models with business models. Revenue models are merely a part of a business model and describe how revenues are obtained, i.e., advertising, auction, markup, production, or subscription. On the other hand, business models are described by answering the following 5 questions:
1. What product are you going to make or what service are you going to provide? And how will you do it?
2. How will you generate revenues from what you make or provide? (revenue model) And how will you market what you have to offer?
3. What are your costs?
4. How will you price it?
5. Why will customers use you (or keep using you) rather than your competitors?
Business models are usually not all that hard to document. Take any store on the main street, in which you live and answer the above 5 questions about that company. Many of the answers can be found just by looking at the store while walking down the street. And some of the answers will require a little investigation or research. But the pieces of the puzzle will fit together not too long after the project was started. And what you will have is a diagram of an existing business at a specific point in time making a certain profit on a certain amount of gross sales.
Once armed with the documented business models for the competitors in the market you want to start your business, then you are in a position to create a business model for your new business so it will be able to compete with those competitors. And to actually transform your business model document into a real life business, then all you will need to do is write a 25-35 page sound business plan which you can then implement.
Now that I think I have adequately described what a business model is (and is not) I have to say that much of the book does not stick to talking about business models. The book has 13 chapters, and I did not find the following five chapters to be relevant to the subject at hand:
2. Customer value and relative positioning
7. Executing a business model
11. Financing and valuing a business model
12. Business model planning process
13. Corporate social responsibility and governance
They covered customer analysis, business plans, business plan topics, and business ethics. None of which are directly relevant in a discussion of business models. They don't relate to any of the five questions listed after the first paragraph above.
And I did not find ANY of the cases in Part II of the book to relate to the subject at hand: business models. The case studies simply described certain products or services offered by various companies. It never dissected the business models used in these cases.
I had hoped that the author in this book would have dissected the following generic business models in detail:
>>Retail businesses
>>Service oriented businesses (part service and part product)
>>Product oriented business (part product and part service)
>>Personal service business (all personal services)
>>Distribution companies
>>Internet companies
But this book did not do what I had hoped it would. And unfortunately for me I still haven't found a book that does. All in all, this book was a disappointment. 3 stars!

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approachby Allan Afuah represents a new kind of book. Business models are about making money and most firms are in business to make money (a profit). It is therefore no surprise that the phrase "business model" is increasingly finding its way into CEO speech after speech and in business school functional areas from accounting to finance to marketing to strategy. Because strategic management is inherently integrative in nature and increasingly more focused on firm performance, strategy textbooks have come closest to addressing the subject of business models, but only implicitly and partially so. Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach draws on the latest research in strategic management to explicitly and fully explore business models. It draws on the latest research on to explore which activities a firm performs, how it performs them, and when it performs them to make a profit. It offers an integrated framework for understanding the relationship between the set of activities that a firm chooses to perform, its revenue model, its cost structure, its resources and capabilities, the competitive forces in the firm's industry, and its ability to sustain a competitive advantage even in the face of change. It provides the link between resources, product-market positions and profits―how resources and product-market positions are translated into profits. (Existing strategy texts demonstrate correlation between resources or product-market positions and profits, not their translation into profits). Additionally, it explores the relationship between business models and corporate social responsibility as well as the international component to business models. It offers a definition of business models that is deeply rooted in the resource-based and product-market theories of strategy.

Emerging Financial Markets Review

Emerging Financial Markets
Average Reviews:

I used this book as a secondary book in an MBA class in international financial institutions. The students liked the book (not the price) and I enjoyed teaching from these very well edited teaching notes. Actually, teaching notes is not the right way to describe the book - as each well-researched and well-written chapter focuses on a very specific area. It was easy to integrate the material across different institutions books. Warmly recommended. Only suggestion: needs updating.

This is the first text to be written on Emerging Financial Markets. The book is partially the result of a grant given by Citibank to Columbia Business School for the purpose of designing a new course in emerging financial markets for their MBA program. The text reflects the tremendous research in recent years seeking to explain the financial crises in Latin America and Asia during the mid to late 1990's and related issues such as capital flows, currency regimes, legal and regulatory matters, corporate governance, and the functions and structure of financial systems. "Emerging Financial Markets" suggests and explores three key foundations that explain why emerging markets behave differently than developed markets: law, institutions of information and control, and inflation and currency stability.

Modern Competitive Strategy Review

Modern Competitive Strategy
Average Reviews:

Since Gordon Walker is my strategy professor at SMU, I may be a bit biased, but let me say that this book is actually *readable*, a rare quality in a textbook. Not only that, but it is concise and features several original frameworks for analysis such as Walker's V-C model. I'm not a strategy expert (yet) but this book helps me to better articulate the strategic insights that I do have. If you're an MBA student considering a strategy class that uses this textbook, I advise you to put the time in reading, because this book makes it painless.

Modern Competitive Strategy, 3e, by Gordon Walker, provides a concise, rigorous, and broad synthesis of the theory and empirics of the strategy field. The approach is eclectic, reflecting the diversity of the discipline, drawing on studies in industrial and institutional economics, economic and organizational sociology, mainstream strategy, and finance and marketing when appropriate. Both single business and corporate-level organizations are covered. Ideal for current and budding managers, many short cases, company examples, and practical tools are used to illustrate the concepts. The material is appropriate for either a full semester course or a single module in MBA programs, advanced undergraduate courses, EMBA and executive education classes.

Internet Business Models and Strategies: Text and Cases Review

Internet Business Models and Strategies: Text and Cases
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In June I requested an Advanced copy of Internet Business Models and Strategies by Afuah and Tucci (McGraw-Hill) in order to review it for my E-Commerce and Entrepreneurship class. After having read many books on the subject matter, I was delighted to find this book and have decided to adopt it for my course. The book provides models and frameworks for understanding e-commerce and e-commerce strategies. It incorporates many concepts from basic marketing and management classes as well as one chapter on financing a start-up. This text is particularly appropriate for my class because it not only provides an overview of e-commerce, it also provides information for entrepreneurs on some of the important matters that need to be taken into consideration when starting a company on-line. The authors discuss the problems, opportunities and strategies that can be used for a clicks-and-mortar firm as well as for a strictly dot.com firm. The text provides the reader with basic information on the infrastructure of e-commerce and its associated technology. The text is written in understandable language which will make it easier for readers who have no knowledge of e-commerce technology to grasp the concepts. In addition to providing multiple models in the text to give readers the "big picture", the text also provides multiple cases on some of the major players in e-commerce including: Red Hat, eBay, Netscape, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Hotmail and more. Additionally, the authors provide thought-provoking discussion questions at the end of each chapter. There are many things about this book that I like, but I'll highlight two that I find most interesting and/or relevant. First, the book takes a broad perspective on e-commerce. It does not just focus on a marketing or financial perspective. While there are many good books thatconsumers/businesses can get their hands on at Barnes and Noble andBorders that are very good at telling individuals "how to", this text gives the reader the big picture for staying competitive in e-commerce in the long run. The second highlight for me (which I'm sure is impacted by the fact that I teach Marketing and Management classes) is the authors inclusion of the 5-Cs (coordination, commerce, community, content and communication) throughout the text. I was at an e-business expo in Minneapolis June 7 and 8 and listened to many speakers. Onecomment about e-commerce from Tom Kieffer, President and CEO of Agiliti, stood out to me, "it's about communications, not computing". Iam not a tech-head, and I was thrilled to hear the president of an ASPemphasize the importance of communication in e-commerce. Technology gives us the foundation for e-commerce, but people must manage the information that is being presented. Afuah and Tucci affirm this idea throughout their book.
