The Patient History: Evidence-Based Approach (Lange Medical Books) Review

.......... This book is the best book for 2nd and 3rd year students who are interacting with patients for the first time. the hardest part about taking a history is knowing what questions to ask. this book TELLS YOU. It's organized by system and by Chief complaint, each section includes a well thought out DDx, and a list of questions you should ask and what it mean if the patient says yes. it also tells you what physical signs to look for and what lab tests to order. Your presentations and H&Ps will through and you will understand why you ask all those silly questions in the first place.

First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 2 CK, Second Edition (First Aid USMLE) Review

First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 2 CK, Second Edition (First Aid USMLE)
Average Reviews:

I am really surprised that out of the various USMLE books reviewed here on Amazon, this one has been grossly ignored. This book is really thorough in its review. The second edition features 344 topics covered in a clinical vignette format (prototypical cases similar to the ones encountered on the Step 2 CK exam) and each case is followed by questions that revolve around the core question stems that are tested on this exam, such as:
- What is the most likely diagnosis?
- What is the next step in management?
- What is the next diagnostic test?
- What is the treatment?
And there are other questions as well which deal with differentials, risk factors, epidemiology, pathophysiology, etc depending on the respective case/topic being discussed. Most topics are covered in a page or two.
A really cool feature of the book is its two-column format which is excellent for self-quizzing and interactive learning. Excellent review source!

First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CS, Third Edition (First Aid USMLE) Review

First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CS, Third Edition (First Aid USMLE)
Average Reviews:

I read this book the week before my clinical skill exam. The first section contains general information about the testing center areas. There are hotels listed, restaurants, and transportation suggestions. The next section contains information about the format of the exam and the expectations. It reviews how to introduce yourself, what types of questions to ask, and what to do in the physical exam. I appreciated this since I had been on surgery the past couple of rotations, so I needed a refresher. The next section had "mini-cases". They gave little scenarios, then a good differential and examples of diagnostic studies to order. The last section had more in-depth cases. The formats given were the same as the real exam. They give you check-offs that are specific on what information you should get. It also has tips on difficult patients you might encounter. Then, a sample note is given. It takes a while to get through the book, and it is such an annoying test to prepare for! But I was nervous and this book allowed me to feel well prepared. I will delete this post if I don't end up passing!!
