This book "Environmental Science Demystified" has actually done a great job by exposing the rudiments or fundamentals of the chosen topic. The chemistry and science of Environmental Science have been brought to the fore by this book. The book attacks the difficulty in environmental math a great deal making the topic a cup of tea for readers of the subject. The book is a must-read for all those who find it difficult to go through very many pages of any book, as it has simplified the topic a great deal for them. I highly recommend it to all and sundry who in one way or the other have something to do with the topic.

Global Warming and Climate Change Demystified Review

Many books written on the topic of global warming and climate change. However, this one stands out as being especially helpful in understanding this complex issue that I think has confused a lot of people. For one thing it lays out the science in a clear and understandable way. It can be read by someone who does not have a strong scientific backgroud or interest. But it can also gives a reader enough detail to go beyond the simple assertions of fact found in other books and articles. The book is honest and direct with the facts. It does not over-dramatize the problem as some other books have done. It retails a lot of crediblity by stating but not overstating the scientific data that has been gathered in recent years. The reader is given the opportunity to respond to the issue without being beaten over the head with a political agenda. The case for global warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels however is made clear to the reader. Its effects in terms of impact on the planet are also spelled out in convincing detail. What I like best is the section on solutions. This is not a lets-be-green for a day feel good book. The solutions go well beyond just screwing in more efficient light bulbs or everyone doing their part. Specific changes to how we generate energy and transport people are spelled out. Coal will be a dominant and unavoidable source of electric power for the next several decades. This book provides a very practical and realistic insight into what needs to be done to reduce the impact of coal on climate while searching for longer term renewable sources of power. I also like the fact that this book is up to date in that it includes the most recent results from the IPCC and the Bali confernece held this year. There are several good books coming out on the subject of climate change (and some not so good ones), but I think this one should be on everyone's list.

A Forest of Voices: Conversations in Ecology Review

A Forest of Voices: Conversations in Ecology

I want to applaud the editors of this volume for including a diverse set of viewpoints. A few other works of this type merely include the "typical" pieces of authors such as Thoreau. While these authors are included in A Forest of Voices, other not so well-known authors are found as well. Some of these authors argue the politically correct approach to environmentalism common in our society today. Others do not, thus providing an important balance of views. While I cannot say I agree with the authors in many of the pieces, I applaud the collection of works. As its apt subtitle suggests, A Forest of Voices does provoke stimulating Conversations in Ecology.

The author addresses both the fundamentals and advanced social concepts mixed with excellent examples of the economic principles which resource managers must make during the policy process and the inherent problems these policies present. Molles has outdone himself with this book. It presents the reader a great book for students who are not majoring in ecology and a great way to understand ecology and the different field works done in the area. The tables and organization are great. I speacially like the way the author makes a subject easy to understand and the way the tables and pictures help you to understand. It's a great book.

This introductory general ecology text features a strong emphasis on helping students grasp the main concepts of ecology while keeping the presentation more applied than theoretical. An evolutionary perspective forms the foundation of the entire discussion. The book begins with the natural history of the planet, considers portions of the whole in the middle chapters, and ends with another perspective of the entire planet in the concluding chapter. Its unique organization of focusing only on several key concepts in each chapter sets it apart from the competition.
