Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America Review

Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America

As an instructor of Human Sexuality, I have used several textbooks over the years and I always find that (while adequate) there is always something missing from each of them. You know what that means ... buying and using more supplementary materials.
This is the first textbook I have ever seen that is simply PERFECT just the way it is. I will use it in every single one of my future classes. The students, faculty and staff agree. This is the one Human Sexuality book the whole world should read.
Bravo!

Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America presents a forward thinking, open approach to Human Sexuality for today's student. The new lead authors, Bill Yarber and Barbara Sayad, continue to bring their research experience to the book while maintaining the engaging writing style that original author Bryan Strong brought to this best-selling text for years. The first text to achieve a full integration of cutting-edge research with a contemporary "sex-positive" approach, it also strives to represent the modern, diverse world that students encounter outside the classroom. Both within the text itself and throughout the exemplary art and photo program, the focus is on inclusion. Human Sexuality has been lauded by students and instructors alike for providing the most integrated and non-judgmental view of sexual orientation available. The seventh edition maintains these themes while adding a new contemporary design, streamlined format and significant content and feature revisions and updates.

Sexuality Today Review

Sexuality Today

From what I can see, this book has a few minor issues.
1.) If you are not a psychology student, some terminology and concepts may require further explanation.
2.) Some of the pictures seem to fill space rather than offer illustration of concepts, such as a cheesecake shot of a gentleman reclining to the side, displaying penis and testes. I'd rather have the anatomical graphics as they offer information - that does not.
3.) Some of the language is sloppy. For example, when discussing sexual differentiation, the author offers, "Here the rubber meets the road with regard to controversies about nature and nurture. Debate has raged for centuries about the relative importance of genetics versus the environment ..." No, debate hasn't raged for centuries about genetics, given that the concept of genes themselves was really only developed in scientific circles in the 1850's. Debate has raged about nature versus nurture, but could not have raged regarding a concept that wasn't introduced yet. Additionally, the rubber meets the road? Not to be flippant, but not only does this offer a firm view of what has happened (an increase in speed of discussion? Paths diverging? Heaven help us, a colloquialism for a condom meeting asphalt?) but it is an outdated term if one were to consider the average age of the student using this text.
So, to keep it short (because it's possible that size *does* matter), the author has some interesting concepts, but could do better. I'll give it a B.

This trusted text successfully balances psychological, biological, and social aspects of human sexuality, integrating the latest research findings and providing a variety of tools to help students engage personally with core concepts. The author's balanced approach is evident in his ability to present various sides of controversial topics in a neutral voice, supported by sound research yet expressed in a lively and applied manner.
The new ninth edition features a streamlined format, updated and reorganized content, several new figures and illustrations, and an increased emphasis on real student voices.Kelly comes with student and instructor access to SexSource Online, a unique collection of brief video clips on core concepts in sexuality.
This paperback textbook is comprehensive yet manageable in a one-term course, and priced at 20% to 40% less than competing books. Related volumes of interest include Annual Editions: Human Sexuality, and Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Human Sexuality
