The Moral of the Story: An Introduction to Ethics Review

The Moral of the Story: An Introduction to Ethics

I bought this book for my introduction to ethics college course and after reading the first few chapters, decided I was definetely not selling it back to the college bookstore. This book provides a clear and easy to read format for understanding the more difficult works of the classic philosphers, as well as interweaving the moral lessons in modern movies and books. By relating ethical frameworks to movies you've seen, one is able to gain a clear understanding of ethical thought as taught by the "masters" of moral philosophy. The class is over, but I am still reading this book for enjoyment.

Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy Review

Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy

The Mappes/Zembaty reader has everything one would want in an introductory primer on ethics and social policy. The editors have collected well-argued and important essays by philosophers, jurists and laymen on most of the politically charged topics of today, from abortion to pornography to environmentalism. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated to include any treatment of behaviors made newly possible by the Internet; perhaps a newer edition will accommodate this angle.

In its seventh edition, Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy continues to provide material that will encourage reflective and critical examination of key contemporary moral problems. With additional readings and a new organization that groups related chapters together under four categories, this edition enhances the teachability that was the most salient characteristic of previous editions. The text maintains its ability to bring the central issues into clear focus, while allowing supporting arguments for widely diverse positions to be presented by those who embrace them.

Why It's Hard to Be Good: An Introduction to Ethical Theory Review

Why It's Hard to Be Good: An Introduction to Ethical Theory

Palmer does an excellent job at explaining the philosophical bases of ethics and morality. You will be treated to a thoughtful discussion of virtue ethics, duty ethics, utilitarianism, and even evolutionary ethics. Palmer takes on the theory of egoism, as well as John Rawls' ideas about how to build a just and fair society. Although evidently meant as an introductory textbook (each chapter comes with a list of strengths and weaknesses of each major set of ideas, questions for the reader's consideration, study guide and suggested readings), it's good for anyone interested in ethics. The well drawn and often very funny cartoons (also by Palmer, who is a professor emeritus at the College of Marin) make this little gem a good entry in your philosophical library.
