My school bag got stolen out of my car and none of my schools book stores had this book. Thank god I found it on Amazon:)

This book is designed for the biomedical ethics course as a core introduction to biomedical issues in the context of ethical theory. Each chapter unfolds timely, paradigm case examples--many of which have never before been explored in a bioethics text--and presents these topics amidst discussion of their key ethical issues. This short volume complements Pence's popular Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that have Shaped Medical Ethics, Fourth Edition (ISBN 0-07-282935-4), and Classic Works in Medical Ethics: Core Philosophical Readings (ISBN 0-07-038115-1).

The Moral of the Story: An Introduction to Ethics Review

The Moral of the Story: An Introduction to Ethics
Average Reviews:

I expect a textbook to be easily usable as a reference tool, and the format of this book did not meet that criteria. Overall, I found this book very challenging to use as a textbook. There are no chapter summaries or chapter indices for vocabulary introduced in each chapter. When a new word is introduced, the text is merely italicized, not bold-face, so it is difficult to find when searching for a reference. The paragraphs are also rather long, and the material is a bit dry and tends to ramble. On the positive, there are a lot of external sources inserted at the ends of the chapters (excerpts from books and movies) that give more "real-life" examples of the concepts in practice.

The Moral of the Story, offers a remarkably effective approach that helps students understand and evaluate moral issues. Through storytelling and story analysis, using examples from fiction and film, Rosenstand brings classical moral theories to life and shows student how these theories are applied to the world around them. The sixth edition of this text with readings has been thoroughly updated to include coverage of and examples from recent research, events, and films. It also expands the applied ethics chapter to include the additional topics of media bias, abortion, euthanasia, business ethics, and environmental ethics, in particular the issue of global warming.

I bought this book for my introduction to ethics college course and after reading the first few chapters, decided I was definetely not selling it back to the college bookstore. This book provides a clear and easy to read format for understanding the more difficult works of the classic philosphers, as well as interweaving the moral lessons in modern movies and books. By relating ethical frameworks to movies you've seen, one is able to gain a clear understanding of ethical thought as taught by the "masters" of moral philosophy. The class is over, but I am still reading this book for enjoyment.

Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Science, Technology, and Society Review

Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Science, Technology, and Society

From a student perspective (ie. having to write weekly 2000 word essays pertaining to this book), I have to say my prof made a wonderful decision to choose this book. The topics were very up-to-date and thought provoking. It's nice to discuss the future of robots, cell phone radiation, and have current heated topics in class. I'm sick of hearing about the abortion, death penalty, right to bare arms topics. Students over used those discussions in high schoool. Basically, I give an A+ for the interesting topics.
The book is also setup in a very student friendly fashion. Topics are given a 1 page summary relating the pros and cons of 2 writers opinions before plunging into their papers. After the 2 opinions are presented, there is also a page for points to ponder afterward. These two features proved very handy when having to do class discussions over something you read a week before. Skimming for quick recall can be a good thing!
Although I wouldn't have bought this book if I didn't have to, I believe it is an excellent choice for profs to use in class.

Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy Review

Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy
Average Reviews:

The Mappes/Zembaty reader has everything one would want in an introductory primer on ethics and social policy. The editors have collected well-argued and important essays by philosophers, jurists and laymen on most of the politically charged topics of today, from abortion to pornography to environmentalism. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated to include any treatment of behaviors made newly possible by the Internet; perhaps a newer edition will accommodate this angle.

In its seventh edition, Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy continues to provide material that will encourage reflective and critical examination of key contemporary moral problems. With additional readings and a new organization that groups related chapters together under four categories, this edition enhances the teachability that was the most salient characteristic of previous editions. The text maintains its ability to bring the central issues into clear focus, while allowing supporting arguments for widely diverse positions to be presented by those who embrace them.

Clinical Ethics: A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine, Sixth Edition Review

Clinical Ethics: A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine, Sixth Edition

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics. I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.--Mary Kay Buike, MSW, ACSW; Oncology Social Worker and member of a hospital Bioethics Committee

A Doody's Core Title!
"The authors articulate a systematic method of case analysis for facing challenges in clinical ethics built upon what they refer to as the ‘four topics approach,' neatly summarized on a single-page pullout reference card, providing easy portability of the method to the bedside... the authors provide numerous realistic case examples throughout, which help illustrate a number of the key concepts in the text…The authors have admirably updated their text with newer ethical concerns."--Journal of the American Medical Association

Clinical Ethics introduces the "four-topics" method of approaching ethical problems (i.e., medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features). Each of the four chapters represents one of the topics. In each chapter, the authors discuss cases and provide comments and recommendations. The four-topics method is an organizational process by which clinicians can begin to understand the complexities involved in ethical cases and can proceed to find a solution for each case.

Business Ethics for the 21st Century Review

Business Ethics for the 21st Century
Average Reviews:

Adams and Maine(s) have put together a very good text for standard business ethics classes, or for anyone seeking a comprehensive and readable introduction to the topics and issues in business ethics. I have used it in my classes for a number of years and find it covers the topics in depth and breadth. Students have also found it clear and understandable. One drawback, as with any text for a college level course, is that some topics I would include are omitted. However, this is true of almost any text in the field and for each individual instructor. The other drawback is that for some issues it could use just a bit more "pro-con" selections and presentations. Overall, the issues are presented fairly and in a balanced manner. The stengths of the text outweigh its weaknesses by far.

Business Driven Information Systems Review

Business Driven Information Systems
Average Reviews:

You can pretty much judge this one by its cover. It's very shiny and contains a grammatical error right in the title. Nearly half of the book is occupied by graphics and other visual aids. Personally, I felt like I was developing ADD reading this book. I was constantly being diverted away from the text by figures that more often than not added nothing of value. The book is fairly shallow and is oriented to young business majors with zero technical background. One positive aspect was that it provided plenty of real-world examples. For those from CS or MIS backgrounds, this is certainly not worth the ~$120; you probably already know half the book already. For business majors I can't judge, although I would consider it to be a light introduction. A must have for connoisseurs of shiny objects.

Ethics For Life Review

Ethics For Life
Average Reviews:

I had to read the whole book for Philosophy class. We had to study and analyze this book for over 3 months. I have to say, it's a very interesting and informative book. After reading an extremely bias negative review from another reviewer, of the previous version of this book, I feel inclined to set the record straight.
The reviewer expressed his discontentment towards the way white males are depicted in the book. I thought the author is very fair and neutral in her writing, no where will you find her favoring women over men. She used a lot of examples and historical events to explain the ethical standpoint of various beliefs, religions and cultures. They are not her own opinions, but that of the ethical theories. She puts it in the perpective of the ethical theory under discussion to make you understand it from the inside and gives many great examples. The writing is easy to follow and not too insanely academic like many Philosophy writers.
I believe she gives updated examples and covers more contemporary issues, so get this version if you can.

Both scholarly and practical, this text with readings provides a clear, well-organized overview of theoretical ethics. With a contemporary tone and framework, it aims to significantly improve students' ability to make real-life moral decisions. Multicultural coverage and attention to college students' moral development help readers relate the material to their own experience and their own moral growth.

Why It's Hard to Be Good: An Introduction to Ethical Theory Review

Why It's Hard to Be Good: An Introduction to Ethical Theory
Average Reviews:

Palmer does an excellent job at explaining the philosophical bases of ethics and morality. You will be treated to a thoughtful discussion of virtue ethics, duty ethics, utilitarianism, and even evolutionary ethics. Palmer takes on the theory of egoism, as well as John Rawls' ideas about how to build a just and fair society. Although evidently meant as an introductory textbook (each chapter comes with a list of strengths and weaknesses of each major set of ideas, questions for the reader's consideration, study guide and suggested readings), it's good for anyone interested in ethics. The well drawn and often very funny cartoons (also by Palmer, who is a professor emeritus at the College of Marin) make this little gem a good entry in your philosophical library.
