It is comprised of seventeen legends, varying in length between one and three pages, each preceeded by a paragraph of background material and followed by a page of review questions. The book includes a small but invaluable German-English glossary, owing to the out-of-the-way nature of some of the vocabulary. Aside from the preface and glossary, this book is written entirely in German. While it is not appropriate for the beginner, it is a highly entertaining and helpful book for more experienced students of German.

I had gotten a good start using a CD set, as an intro to the grammer and syntax, but after that part is over you need to learn words! There is no way around it. This book introduces common words that we use ourselves to introduce children to our native language. Body parts, things around the house, animals, geographical entities (rivers, forests), and greetings and exclamations.
The book itself is setup like a grade school workbook, with simple matching activities after showing the words. The back also contains rip out flash cards for every word mentioned in the book. A final useful tool is a puncuation guide in the front with valid examples, so if you can't read German yet (I couldn't when I started), you will learn how to read the words used.

(More customer reviews)I lived in Germany for over three years. My German acquaintances in general liked Americans; but they greatly disliked our cultural ignorance. I also did part-time work as a tour guide and a portion of "tour guiding" is to educate people on the culture, and saw the extent of this ignorance first-hand. While German/Austrian/Swiss society is in a "big picture" sense similar to American, (guilt vs shame-based culture, individuality vs collectivism) there are major differences in personal and business relationships. Anyone who really wants to know Germany or succeed in business dealings with Germans ignores these differences at their peril. This book does an outstanding job of clearly explaining all aspects of German society from Government through economy, consumerism, to social relationships. It also spells out the contrasts between German and American ways of thinking, and between German and Austrian/Swiss world-views. Bottom line is if you want a better vacation experience in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, a better business trip, or are just interested in other cultures, get this book.

(More customer reviews)This is a solid textbook for an intermediate student of German. All explanations are clear and concise. Quite a few exercises, conveniently following each grammar chapter. (The answer key is also provided, which makes it a perfect self-study book). All examples and exercises use very easy vocabulary, which makes it easier to follow and learn the grammar points. The grammar chapters are solely on verbs and all related concepts (e.g., word order, subjunctives, passive voice, different uses of "sein", "werden" and "haben" (the author also gives a number of useful idioms with those verbs)). All major verbs with corresponding prepositions and their uses are also covered (and also conveniently listed in Appendix). However, in order to use this book, you'd already need to know all grammar-related lexicon (e.g., names of parts of speech, all tenses, moods, cases, etc). It's an intermediate textbook, so no time is spent to familarize the reader with all basic grammatical terminology and concepts.
I've used this book to refresh my German, and as the "refresher", I found it perfect. However, for those who are learning all this for the first time, I'd imagine this book might have been even more helpful if it'd had more exercises. Nonetheless, it's a good concise grammar reference or textbook, well worth the price.

(More customer reviews)I used the equivelent of this book in an upper-division Spanish class that I took; I found it truly broadens the vocabulary tremendously. I feel, however, that both of these workbooks, although useful, require a foundation in the syntax of the language for full appreciation of what the authors/editors are trying to do. However, the exercises may be completed without the background.
Especially useful for preparation for travelling and specialized vocabulary (ie. computer, car, etc. etc.)

Communicating In German, Advanced Level Review

In class, we groaned when we had to do the chapter on car parts (I mean I don't really even know what a spark plug is in English!), but the book does teach you important vocabulary while utilizing a thematic approach. It is one of the texts I always take with me for reference. Also, for a classroom environment, the book gives situations and asks questions which are good starting points for conversational practice.
