Communicating In Spanish (Novice Level) Review

Communicating In Spanish (Novice Level)
Average Reviews:

I like this book and the others in the series. I use this book in my Adult Education classes and it works well. There is a need for more depth in practice excercises. The material is easy to follow by the novice and is low stress, just what is needed by people who are returning to school and want something that is easy yet productive.

Spanish Among Amigos : Conversational Spanish Beyond the Classroom Review

Spanish Among Amigos : Conversational Spanish Beyond the Classroom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The really standout feature of this book for me is how easy and fun it is to read. I consider myself fairly capable and passably fluent in conversational Spanish, but not only did I learn completely new and unexpected phrases and colloquial vocabulary in Spanish that had previously been beyond me, but Pepa and Pili (the main characters in the dialogues) had me chuckling and at times guffawing throughout. The author has a great sense of humor and a flair for refreshingly real-sounding conversation - not the stilted repartee you usually see in language books.
After reading this book you will no longer need to sneak peaks at the subtitles during Almodovar movies. This book is great fun to read and the exercises are quite challenging - a real help in moving your Spanish past the text book into the real world.

As they talk about a host of topics, the reader becomes accustomed to conversing naturally in Spanish.

A vocabulary quiz
Hints on grammar and usage

I shopped extensively for a good dictionary at Barnes & Nobles, Borders and libraries and this one is the only one that met all of my requirements:
* lots of idiomatic phrases under relevant root words
* slang and "dirty" words with idiomatic usage
* recent edition with modern technology terms
* thick--no skimping on words
* flexible binding so it would stay open on a desk
Additionally, it has an excellent, 100 page summary of the Spanish language with lots of examples.

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Conversation (Practice Makes Perfect Series) Review

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Conversation (Practice Makes Perfect Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who studied a bit in the past, forgot some easy things, knew a few intermediate things, this great buy really gives you many fine points to help you start to actually speak the language. It's a book for someone who's already gone through a basic/elementary book. You'll get the maximum benefit if you pay attention to many parts of the conversations that aren't even emphasised: I'm referring to the tricky aspect of languages where you can't do word for word translations and the different way prepostions are used. Want to say "about" something in Spanish? Use "de"(!)--and there are many other little stumbling blocks like that, which will either frustrate you or, like me, fascinate you. Like I said, it's a great buy.

Listen 'n' Learn Spanish with Your Favorite Movies Review

Listen 'n' Learn Spanish with Your Favorite Movies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I couldn't believe it when I saw this on the shelf. I use this method frequently in my Spanish classes - we study a list of words, change the language in the DVD menu to Spanish, and then watch the movie in Spanish and discuss it in Spanish. It's a WONDERFUL way to improve your understanding and ability to speak the language, in a fun, non-stressful way.
This book has a very exhaustive list of words for each chapter of the movies, and I believe has a great selection of movies to use for your benefit. There is no pronunciation guide, but I suppose you can watch the movie and hear the words. I do wish the phonetic spellings were next to each word, so that students could sound it out before they listen for it in the movie.
The book has a fairly well laid out plan to help you get the most out of your Movie time, and begins with a basic Core Vocabulary, if you have no Spanish background at all. I don't know if it's a good beginner book, but after even a month of study, I do believe the movies in the beginner section would help you. So here are my step-by step recommendations:
1) Choose a movie you have seen more than once already.(You already know what the actors are saying, so your comprehension level will be up, and you won't experience as much frustration)
2) Before you watch your first movie, study the listed words for at least a week before watching the movie - make flash cards, say them aloud, read them several times over. This will increase your chances of success, and therefore cause you to want to do it again sooner rather than later!
3) Watch one chapter at a time - or about 15 minutes - and then watch it again. See if you can jot down or check off some of the words you hear.
4) Look at your words again. Can you make a complete sentence using three or four of them together? If yes, watch the next chapter. If no, then watch the chapter again.
5) I would be sure to not to overwhelm yourself - keep it to an hour or so or less - too much more, and you'll end up just shutting down a bit unless you're already beyond the beginner stage.
If you have young kids in your house, having this on in the back ground is a GREAT way to facilitate the "immersion method" if they are already familiar with the movie that is playing.
This is a great tool for conversational classes, self-study, and just plain fun! Great job!
The only reason I deducted one star was because I do wish there were some questions for discussion for each movie - just to give the student a chance at forming some original sentences with a bit more direction. Otherwise, excellent!

Teach Yourself Improve Your Spanish Review

Teach Yourself Improve Your Spanish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This CD/textbook combo does a great job in teaching Spanish effectively. The text provides vocabulary and grammar skills through everyday situations (mostly tourist related, such as finding apartments or shopping), and the CDs include listening exercises for each unit to help learners grow accustomed to recognizing the vocabulary as it's used. If used correctly, this course can be an excellent tool for building a stronger foundation in the language.
The focus is on European Spanish, and the recorded material was done by native speakers of that dialect. A number of conversations and listening drills feature South American dialects (namely Chilean and Peruvian), added to provide familiarity with the intonation and pronunciation of the language in those dialects. Although the vocabulary isn't exhaustive for each situation handled in the textbook, it helps learners gain a better working knowledge of how to use what they learn in everyday situations. The audio drills on the recordings are often not transcribed, so listeners build comprehension skills from the start. Throughout most of the book, the native speakers talk at a speed just slightly slower than that of everyday speech, but this shouldn't discourage perspective buyers from purchasing this course -- the audio is clear and instructional, and the listening skills a person can gain from this course are without a doubt essential.
After completing the course, learners won't be fluent by any means, but the main objective -- improving your Spanish -- will definitely have been reached if the course was used correctly. Moving on to a more advanced course (Living Language Ultimate Spanish : Advanced is an ideal choice) is the next step toward continuing self-study in the language.

Vox Compact Spanish and English Dictionary (National Textbook Language Dictionaries) Review

Vox Compact Spanish and English Dictionary (National Textbook Language Dictionaries)
Average Reviews:

A dictionary is just one of those books that doesn't have much to speak of (no plot twists, no character development, etc.), so I'm afraid this review will be rather short.
That said, this is the BEST Spanish-English dictionary I've ever used. It contains over 85,000 entries, plus complete descriptions of both English and Spanish grammar, tables of all the irregular verbs, and a 45-page section that defines literally thousands of commonly used phrases and idioms in both languages. It also has synonyms for words that have multiple translations so that you know the difference, for example, between a person's hand ("mano") and the hand of a clock ("manecilla"). Nevertheless, it comes in a convenient size with easy-to-read font so that it's perfect for use by students. If you're a school student who's studying Spanish, this is the only Spanish-English dictionary you'll ever buy.

Taking language out of the abstract auditory realm, this book phonetically ties the words that are unfamilar to concrete images we know. His method and books should be read and used by foreign language teachers. It's a quick read, and I solidly learned about 350 useful words and basic sentence structure in 3 days. The examples he has chosen are creative, charming and memorable. I'm impressed and grateful to this author. Buy it and enjoy it.

The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs Review

The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me this book slightly edges out the now venerable 501 Spanish Verbs book, because it includes more examples of usages at the bottom of each page, and the 501 book doesn't have as many of these. There is also a nice list of the Top 50 Spanish verbs which is useful.
On the con side, I didn't like the visual layout on the page quite as much as the 501 book, and that book also includes the progressive conjugations using estar at the very bottom of the verb tables on each page. This isn't a big deal since this pattern doesn't change once you understand it, but it's still nice to have.
One other feature the 501 book has is a good section on the idiomatic uses of some of the verbs, and a fairly extensive section of conversations in different topic areas using the well-known Berlitz method. There are dozens of these at the end of the book. If you already have a book that does that, you won't need this one, but it's here if you want it. Despite these features, as I said, I still prefer the Big Red book slightly, and the two are the same price, so there's no reason to prefer one over the other there.
There is one other "big gun" in the Spanish verbs area, which is the 2000 Essential Spanish Verbs book. This one only includes about 250 tables of verbs, but there is an index which extends that to 2000 different verbs, since you just look up the verb in the index and it directs you to the correct pattern. However, this book has one major advantage over the Big Red and 501 books. It has an extensive section on the grammar of the 65 most important verbs, including many of the irregular ones, with a detailed discussion and a practice sectioni for each. I thought this was a very nice feature and so that book is worth your consideration also. I actually prefer that book to either of these, although the print is much smaller and the layout of the tables isn't as nice. If the publisher would revamp the typeface, layout, and aesthetics a bit it could definitely give the other two books a run for their money.
Any of these three Spanish verb books is excellent, however, and will help you bootstrap your Spanish speaking and reading knowledge and facility to the next level. They're also all the same price, so again, there's no reason to prefer one over the other there.

Tune Up Your Spanish: Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Spoken Spanish Review

Tune Up Your Spanish: Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Spoken Spanish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was introduced to me while I was in Mexico to increase my fluency, and after reading it, I determined to buy it when I returned.
The book begins where classroom Spanish ends. It tells you what folks are really saying and different ways they say it and adds to your repertoire of phrases and expressions that can make your conversation more humorous and enjoyable for yourself and those to whom you are speaking.
It is divided into 10 sections which cover most of the experiences you may or may not want to have in a Spanish-speaking culture, including shopping, travel, active listening, love and romance, and my favorite - Understanding how language, culture, and humor interact. The book is filled with idiomatic expressions and sayings which Spanish-speakers use often and love to hear. It tells you the degree of strength/crudness of different expressions and the words that are innocuous in one culture and vulgar in another to prevent major embarassment.
I haven't listened yet to the accompanying CD but plan to enjoy it as much as I enjoy the book. For anyone who wants to enrich their use of expressions and speak more of the vernacular, this is the book to get. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do more than read write and listen to Spanish.

Thank Heaven for this little book! I met the author on my bus ride home one day earlier this year. He noticed me plodding through my huge Spanish practice book and correctly noted that I was trying to learn. I now have a copy of this book, and in the first few pages, it cleared up something that I've been trying to figure out since I started studying Spanish in the late 80s--when to use the preterite versus the imperfect! That issue has literally been driving me crazy.
The author gets right to the point and gives you simple, easy-to-remember explanations of how to use the preterite and the imperfect tenses. Within 5 minutes, I felt I had the confidence to finally figure it out. The exercises help you seal in that knowledge and practice, practice, practice!
This book is highly recommended -- get it and learn how to speak the past-tense properly. You won't regret it!

Easy Spanish Step-By-Step Review

Easy Spanish Step-By-Step
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this book to go from virtually no knowledge of Spanish grammar, to pretty decent competence with everything it covers (all parts of speech up including the most common verb tenses). In my opinion, it's probably the best of it's class. There are hundreds of exercises, and if you do them all, you'll end up learning the subject.
Much more than grammar is covered, though. It's great for giving an excellent basic vocabulary that covers many aspects of daily life. One particularly clever trick it uses to boost vocabulary is inconspicuously including many cognates unannounced among the Spanish vocabulary that is taught. The result is you find you can use and understand far more words than you were consciously learning.
A surprisingly early chapter has you reading a rather detailed and convincing letter about a family trip to Mexico that touches on archeology, music, language, personal feelings, and more.
The pace is very fast... If you're brand-new to Spanish, and you don't know how to count to ten, or that "perro" means dog, you might want something a tad more basic first.
Also, it's dense. If you already know some Spanish words, all the exercises in each of the earlier chapters can be done in a single sitting, but by the middle of the book, plan on spending several days on each chapter... The exercises will stretch you and make you think and process what's been covered.
Lastly, it's not a tourist' phrasebook. It's vocabulary goes quickly far beyond "tourist Spanish," and I recommend it highly for the traveller; but it doesn't replace a well-planned phrasebook oriented to tourist needs

This is a good book if you need a simple review of grammar. The explanations are easy to understand and the illustrations are helpful for remembering new vocabulary words. However, the illustrations are not very easy to read on Kindle, largely because the image isn't in color. Some of the text boxes overlap the right edge of the screen and are lost to the reader forever.
For this particular book, I would recommend getting it in print.

Spanish Demystified: A Self -Teaching Guide Review

Spanish Demystified: A Self -Teaching Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is fantastic. I've been through 3 1/2 years of spanish in school and have about 12 spanish "reference" books like this one. Immediately this one was my favorite and I started working in it right away, whereas the others I would just work on half-heartedly.
The Spanish Demystified layout gives me a real sense of accomplishment - the chapters and lessons are not too long and the short quizzes give real-time feedback on how well I am understanding the material. There are a few times when I've used those other reference books (or the internet) to clarify a topic if I didn't quite "get it" from this book, but that has only been a few times.
The drawback to this book is that there are errors in it... several of them. For the most part they are pretty obvious (putting a singular in place of a plural, etc.) but it's a little unnerving at times.
Even with the errors, I still give this 5 stars because it is a thorough book that gives it to you straight, for Latin American Spanish. Another helpful part is that it has a pretty comprehensive index that I find myself using quite a bit, plus there's a spanish/english dictionary in the back that covers most of the vocab you will run across in the book.
So the bottom line is that this is a great "fast forward" spanish book. Also - with my 3 1/2 years of Spanish (a straight A student), even the intro sections have details that I never picked up in class. I was tempted to skip those first chapters, but some of the simple tips were SO worth it.
