The Ultimate French Verb Review and Practice (UItimate Review & Reference Series) Review

The Ultimate French Verb Review and Practice (UItimate Review and Reference Series)

(I have just started to use this book, and am a few chapters in, so keep in mind that this is a review of the format and structure of the book, not of every detail.)
I am trying to revive my French after seven years of dormancy, and I thought this book might help me to produce the French that, these days, I can only read. I was not wrong. One of the broad, general advantages of this book is that all of the verbs appear in full sentences (both in examples and in exercises). That means that working on the verbs doesn't mean just practicing declensions: it means expressing full thoughts.
One of the other reviewers also mentioned the question of register, and this is another of the book's major strengths. Since I mostly read French, the vagaries of spoken French are still mysterious to me. The authors not only discuss the different ways of using verbs and constructing phrases in formal, colloquial, or general speech, but they also do little things like giving pointers on words with difficult pronunciation. Brilliant!
Strength number three: the authors' attention to idiomatic expressions. While they do give lists of verbs, they also often teach verbs in ways that make it easier to remember and use those words. For example, when teaching "prendre" for irregular verbs, they also give a list of expressions (like, "prendre son temps") and later, a list of compounds like "apprendre" and "surprendre". I really believe that teaching words in related groups like this will make them mean more to a student and "stick" in the student's mind.
Since others have talked about the general structure of the book, I'll mention finally one superficial aspect. When it comes to language-learning books, they're not much use unless you actually use them. Superficial matters like layout, paper quality, and type are really important. This workbook is lovely. The paper is of better quality then those old disposable workbooks I used in my high school French class. The layout incorporates lots of white space, so I can concentrate on the words and even make notes beside them. I say this because I also looked at the authors' first book (Ultimate French Grammar Review and Practice) after I fell in love with this one, and that one looked a lot busier, and didn't have spaces for the exercise solutions! They clearly made some improvements this time around.

Taking language out of the abstract auditory realm, this book phonetically ties the words that are unfamilar to concrete images we know. His method and books should be read and used by foreign language teachers. It's a quick read, and I solidly learned about 350 useful words and basic sentence structure in 3 days. The examples he has chosen are creative, charming and memorable. I'm impressed and grateful to this author. Buy it and enjoy it.

I homeschool my 12 yo and any help I get is useful. The workbooks were both brand new in mint condition. They are a perfect companion to the hardcover textbooks. Math is all about repetition, doing problems over and over again, and the workbooks offer a multitude of practice problems.

Pre-Algebra DeMYSTiFieD, Second Edition Review

Pre-Algebra DeMYSTiFieD, Second Edition

This book does exactly what it says it will do, right up to chapter 11. For some reason, the author seemed to be in a hurry and deviated from the normal "step by step" approach used in previous chapters.
I understood everything from page 1 to the bottom of page 211. At the top of page 212 there are 5 practice questions that left me in the dark. No explanation as to what the author wants and the answers add to the confusion.
Here is an example of how easily it is to become confused.
The author walks you through graphing lines.
Page 211:
Draw the graph of 2x-y=8
Find the coordinates of two points on the line:
Let x= 1
2x-y=8
2(1)-y=8
2-y=8
2-2-y=8-2
-y=6
-y/-1 = 6/-1
y=6
(1,6)
I understand how to do this, and the author goes on to show how to graph 2x-y=8 when x=1 and x=5
Page 212:
Draw the graph of each of the following:
1.
2.
3.
4. 3x-y=6.
5.
Up until this point the author gives you the value of x for you to solve his examples and how this looks on a graph. Suddenly at practice time you are not given the value for x and you are suppose to graph a line. I am just learning how to work this type of problem. Am I suppose to substitute my own value for x? A little input would have been helpful here. The answers that are given, if I am to give my own value for x, my lines will be different than the lines the author shows? Is this right?
I cannot count how many times I had to go back and re-read previous pages in chapter 11 to try and read the authors mind.
I am now trying to take the chapter 11 quiz.
Question 6. The line whose equation is 2x+3y=6 is:
(a) line l
(b) line m
(c) line n
(d) line o
I have read and re-read this chapter and gone over the previous examples. I have tried to find an answer on the internet. Am I suppose to use my own substitute values for x? If so, wouldn't the line be different from the authors answer? I have no idea because I don't know what values the author used versus mine. I don't like to reverse engineer answers. As if you could reverse engineer lines on a graph.
I take a pre-college test in 10 days. I can only hope they do not ask me to choose the "line whose equation is x-2y=4".

Schaum's Outline of Complex Variables, 2ed (Schaum's Outline Series) Review

Schaum's Outline of Complex Variables, 2ed (Schaum's Outline Series)

I purchased this book for my undergraduate class in Complex Analysis because I was not overly impressed with the required text by Little and Brown. I found that the examples were well chosen, the explanations were easy to follow and the solved problems were informative in their step by step approach. I have compared this to several other texts and while none are perfect, this is at the very least an excellent supplement to any of them.

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2008-2009 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) Review

5 Steps to a 5 AP World History, 2008-2009 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series)

I just finished my Freshman year at college, and I am lucky enough to be at a college that allows its students to take AP tests through their senior year in order to get out of General Education requirements. My school has this nasty World History requirement so I decided to try my hand at the AP World History test.
I'd heard in the past that the "5 Steps to a 5" books are amazing, so I decided to make it my sole study guide for the test. Granted, being a college student, I had a ton of homework and didn't have time to study this AP book during the school year. To make matters worse, the AP test was right after my college finals ended. So, I was exhausted and only had 2 full days to read/skim/study this book.
As much as history books tend to bore me, this book was a very easy (and interesting!) read and everything clicked in my head after reading it only once (trust me, that doesn't typically happen!) The book's change/continuity charts were super helpful not only in reviewing for the CCT essay but as an easy way to cram. Also, the book essentially tells you the bare minimum you need to know for the test.
I got to the test super nervous, thinking I didn't know anything, but unbeknownst to me, this book prepped me so well, I flew through the test and scored a 5.
If you want a book that will teach you to pass the AP World History test in the easiest way possible, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT!
***EDIT*** I lent this book out to a college friend, who took the AP test in May 2010 under the same circumstances as me, and used it as his sole study guide. He also got a 5. :-)
