Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Conversation (Practice Makes Perfect Series) Review

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Conversation (Practice Makes Perfect Series)
Average Reviews:

As someone who studied a bit in the past, forgot some easy things, knew a few intermediate things, this great buy really gives you many fine points to help you start to actually speak the language. It's a book for someone who's already gone through a basic/elementary book. You'll get the maximum benefit if you pay attention to many parts of the conversations that aren't even emphasised: I'm referring to the tricky aspect of languages where you can't do word for word translations and the different way prepostions are used. Want to say "about" something in Spanish? Use "de"(!)--and there are many other little stumbling blocks like that, which will either frustrate you or, like me, fascinate you. Like I said, it's a great buy.

Your First 100 Words in German : German for Total Beginners Through Puzzles and Games Review

Your First 100 Words in German : German for Total Beginners Through Puzzles and Games
Average Reviews:

This book is an amazing tool for starting your German Vocabulary. I had gotten a good start using a CD set, as an intro to the grammer and syntax, but after that part is over you need to learn words! There is no way around it. This book introduces common words that we use ourselves to introduce children to our native language. Body parts, things around the house, animals, geographical entities (rivers, forests), and greetings and exclamations.
The book itself is setup like a grade school workbook, with simple matching activities after showing the words. The back also contains rip out flash cards for every word mentioned in the book. A final useful tool is a puncuation guide in the front with valid examples, so if you can't read German yet (I couldn't when I started), you will learn how to read the words used.

Exacto : A Practical Guide to Spanish Grammar Review

Exacto : A Practical Guide to Spanish Grammar
Average Reviews:

This book is set up in a manner very similar to an outline. It is as if the author took notes on every other Spanish book ever written and condensed it into this paperback. It lists grammar rules in 3 levels so that any level of Spanish student could use this book to learn or to review. I have an entire bookcase full of Spanish Verb/Vocab and Grammar books and this is by far the best.

Easy Spanish Step-By-Step Review

Easy Spanish Step-By-Step
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this book to go from virtually no knowledge of Spanish grammar, to pretty decent competence with everything it covers (all parts of speech up including the most common verb tenses). In my opinion, it's probably the best of it's class. There are hundreds of exercises, and if you do them all, you'll end up learning the subject.
Much more than grammar is covered, though. It's great for giving an excellent basic vocabulary that covers many aspects of daily life. One particularly clever trick it uses to boost vocabulary is inconspicuously including many cognates unannounced among the Spanish vocabulary that is taught. The result is you find you can use and understand far more words than you were consciously learning.
A surprisingly early chapter has you reading a rather detailed and convincing letter about a family trip to Mexico that touches on archeology, music, language, personal feelings, and more.
The pace is very fast... If you're brand-new to Spanish, and you don't know how to count to ten, or that "perro" means dog, you might want something a tad more basic first.
Also, it's dense. If you already know some Spanish words, all the exercises in each of the earlier chapters can be done in a single sitting, but by the middle of the book, plan on spending several days on each chapter... The exercises will stretch you and make you think and process what's been covered.
Lastly, it's not a tourist' phrasebook. It's vocabulary goes quickly far beyond "tourist Spanish," and I recommend it highly for the traveller; but it doesn't replace a well-planned phrasebook oriented to tourist needs

Spanish Demystified: A Self -Teaching Guide Review

Spanish Demystified: A Self -Teaching Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is fantastic. I've been through 3 1/2 years of spanish in school and have about 12 spanish "reference" books like this one. Immediately this one was my favorite and I started working in it right away, whereas the others I would just work on half-heartedly.
The Spanish Demystified layout gives me a real sense of accomplishment - the chapters and lessons are not too long and the short quizzes give real-time feedback on how well I am understanding the material. There are a few times when I've used those other reference books (or the internet) to clarify a topic if I didn't quite "get it" from this book, but that has only been a few times.
The drawback to this book is that there are errors in it... several of them. For the most part they are pretty obvious (putting a singular in place of a plural, etc.) but it's a little unnerving at times.
Even with the errors, I still give this 5 stars because it is a thorough book that gives it to you straight, for Latin American Spanish. Another helpful part is that it has a pretty comprehensive index that I find myself using quite a bit, plus there's a spanish/english dictionary in the back that covers most of the vocab you will run across in the book.
So the bottom line is that this is a great "fast forward" spanish book. Also - with my 3 1/2 years of Spanish (a straight A student), even the intro sections have details that I never picked up in class. I was tempted to skip those first chapters, but some of the simple tips were SO worth it.

Communicating In German, Advanced Level Review

Communicating In German, Advanced Level

...but not really to learn on your own. We used this text in my University German class. In class, we groaned when we had to do the chapter on car parts (I mean I don't really even know what a spark plug is in English!), but the book does teach you important vocabulary while utilizing a thematic approach. It is one of the texts I always take with me for reference. Also, for a classroom environment, the book gives situations and asks questions which are good starting points for conversational practice.
