Read & Think English (Book + Audio CD) Review

Read and Think English (Book + Audio CD)
Average Reviews:

I bought this for my boyfriend in Argentina, who wants to move to the US. His English is good, but could be better. This book has tons of articles in English about different parts of America and its culture, very informative! As the person reads, certain important words are translated on the outside margins, so the person doesn't have to look somewhere else in the book... the definitions are right there on the page as you read! And the audio CD helps train the brain to pick up the accent and pronounciation while keeping up with the reading. Highly recommended for non-native speakers looking to improve their English.

Breakthroughs in Critical Reading Skills Review

Breakthroughs in Critical Reading Skills
Average Reviews:

I find this book fantastic. It will help students learn how to read passages, charts, cartoons or ads. It has five chapters and on page 1 to 11 there is a pre-test. The test will show students on what chapter they should focus. Besides, there is a post-test at the last part of this book. Students can evaluate their work and will know what to review. "Main Idea and Details","Summarizing and Paraphrasing","Making Inferences" or "Predicting" are included in some chapters. By using this textbook, students will acquire critical reading and thinking skills. I am going to use this book as a textbook for my English class.

Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, Grade 6 Review

Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, Grade 6
Average Reviews:

I loved this book. I teach English to a Japanese girl that spent 6 years in the United States. Her mother wanted her to keep up on her English skills as if she was going to an American school. I used the Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills Grade 5 last year and this year I have been using the book for grade 6. I have been comparing these books to the material that my daughter is learning in her American school and the book has covered everything. I also use some of the material from the book to supplement my daughter's school work. I think that every parent should use these books.

McGraw-Hill's SAT, 2008 Edition book only Review

McGraw-Hill's SAT, 2008 Edition book only
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an SAT teacher, I first took notice of the earlier-edition Amazon reviews that frankly identified the book as a tool capable of reaping major rewards, provided the student invests time and hard work. I reiterate those sentiments, and recommend the book to those willing to shore up their skills to tackle the SAT, and beyond it the lifetime of academic challenges.
A no-non-sense tone underlies the book. Because of the style, a reader might either take comfort from recognizing the traditional voice of school instructors, or shy away in search of quick fixes. In my case, I acknowledged indebtedness to my high school teachers for developing me with the conventional wisdom. The reader could seamlessly absorb this book into high school education.
Onto some specifics:
.The outstanding essay section fashions the student, step by step, into a logical thinker capable of wielding the power of language. Educators might find intellectual familiarity with Joseph Williams' college text, Style. The content, however, is accessible to a high school student willing to learn.
.As a labor of love, the compiled passages and questions show social conscience, scientific wonder at the world, and appreciation of beautiful language.
.The meticulous organization and sub-organization form branches of learning that could be selectively viewed. A reader could take a step back and glean the entire content, or zoom in locally on the areas of greatest need. Other books on the market do cover the question types, but not with this type of crystal-clear vision. A conscientious student could navigate to problem areas and relentlessly eliminate the shortcomings; this is a highly effective way to maximize one's score.
.Though serious, the book is not so ponderous as to ignore the need for a student to exercise a nimble mind at times rather than stay in an overly scholastic pose. The authors come right out and say that the SAT math is different from school math. They equip the student for the occasion.
.Unless I am mistaken, I believe this book was the first to market with those clever, word-root based vocabulary flashcards, which I see in many books now. I also believe in the effectiveness of math flashcards for burning the quantitative thought patterns into the brain. Sometimes, drilling is necessary; I tell my students to shuffle the deck and keep working until instant recall.
Overall, the book offers a highly effective program to build up a student from ground up.

Six-Way Paragraphs in the Content Areas: Middle Level Review

Six-Way Paragraphs in the Content Areas: Middle Level
Average Reviews:

I'm an Americorps volunteer with the Department of Corrections. I have been using this book with offenders working on their GED. This book is perfect for students that struggle with identifying the key concept in an article and supporting details. I like how it has a form to track the type of mistakes being made so that you can identify if there is an area of weakness for each student. I also like the fact that the readings are short enough that students don't lose interest. The article topics are diverse enough to interest an adult reader which is rare to find for this reading level.
