This is an inspiring and analytical guide book, but anyone looking for an art recipe book will be disappointed. If there is anything young artists want, need, and yet often lack, is exposure to a broad range of artworks. This book offers a great beginning to this journey of understanding art/design with cover to cover juxtapositions of cartoons and cubism, Monet and Sam Francis, and sculpture and furniture design.
I am also strongly in favor of Stewart's basic philosophy of pointing out the ideas and visual strategies behind the making of an artwork. This is a great companion to a studio course of beginning design and sculpture.

Launching the Imagination treats design as both a verb and a noun—as both a process and a product. Design is deliberate—a process of exploring multiple solutions and choosing the most promising option. Through an immersion in 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D concepts, students are encouraged to develop methods of thinking visually that will serve them throughout their studies and careers.
