The Magazine From Cover to Cover : Inside a Dynamic Industry Review

The Magazine From Cover to Cover : Inside a Dynamic Industry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book outlines the magazine publishing process from A to Z. For example, it discusses the pros and cons of subscription vs. newsstand sales, marketing, pricing, and even staff salaries. Business plans are outlined and commented on by various sources. Relatively recent magazines to "mainstream/suburban" American culture like VIBE are discussed with the respect they truly deserve. Even the quality of print paper is discussed (i.e. Rolling Stone's page quality/texture and size vs. VIBE's recent move to glossy pages). "The Magazine From Cover To Cover" is hands down, the most contemporary and authoritative guide to the magazine industry that I have come across. Look out for my 'zine, Pop Life coming to a media outlet near you, thanks to this book, and of course...Amazon!

Launching the Imagination 3D Review

Launching the Imagination 3D

This is an inspiring and analytical guide book, but anyone looking for an art recipe book will be disappointed. If there is anything young artists want, need, and yet often lack, is exposure to a broad range of artworks. This book offers a great beginning to this journey of understanding art/design with cover to cover juxtapositions of cartoons and cubism, Monet and Sam Francis, and sculpture and furniture design.
I am also strongly in favor of Stewart's basic philosophy of pointing out the ideas and visual strategies behind the making of an artwork. This is a great companion to a studio course of beginning design and sculpture.

Launching the Imagination treats design as both a verb and a noun—as both a process and a product. Design is deliberate—a process of exploring multiple solutions and choosing the most promising option. Through an immersion in 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D concepts, students are encouraged to develop methods of thinking visually that will serve them throughout their studies and careers.

Internet Literacy 4e Review

Internet Literacy 4e
Average Reviews:

Fred Hofstetter is an educator (U of Delaware), programmer, author, speaker and writer who knows digital technology from traveling the road of hard knocks via programming his own authoring package (Podium)to the subtleties of surfing the Web for goodies. This most recent book, Internet Literacy ,(Computer Literacy preceded it, I believe) is a very good compendium of just about any topic a general user would ordinarily want to explore on the subject. I believe purchasers may also obtain a CD-ROM (through separate purchase?). You can't miss on this purchase even without the CD though.

Basic Visual Concepts And Principles For Artists, Architects And Designers Review

Basic Visual Concepts And Principles For Artists, Architects And Designers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: A definite must-have book and recommended reading for designers, artists and teachers. Excellent for art teachers seeking project ideas for students in traditional art/design media, also provides a design refresher for teachers with students in digital media, as the principles apply to web, cd-rom and new media design (but not animation. However, there is a section on objects in 3D space).
This book covers key design principles and art techniques that you may have forgotten after art school.
Cons: A lot easier to read for precticing artists and designers; may be brain freeze to art students goggling at the compact knowledge. Not recommended reading unless student is mature enough/is in the higher years/is truly interested.
Initial impression based on format, book thickness and the language used may appear too stiff and seem like very heavy reading at first, specially to first time art educators. Read the book in topics you need in order to digest info better.
After a while the format becomes familiar, the information astoundingly clear/well researched and you realize the book was brilliantly organized. Eureka!
As with all art/design reference book collections, this makes a good backbone book that could be supplemented by others, as it cannot cover everything. Ex: For selecting/using type and organizing layouts try "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams, Peachpit Press. There's a web book version as well.
Final comment: Basic Visual Concepts and Principles, a thumbs up, definitely must have reference.
